My inspiration to pursue a career in women's health stems from my personal experiences with menstrual issues and witnessing systemic healthcare disparities from family members and friends. My journey for women's health began at a young age, seeing my great grandmother getting refused treatment from medical professionals because of her being a black woman. At that moment I knew I had to become an OBGYN to save other's families, friends, and loved ones from systematic mistreatment in healthcare. To add on, recognizing the alarming maternal mortality rates in my community where Black and Hispanic women are three to four times more likely to die from pregnancy related complications than any other race. These statistics affect not only the lives of women who look like me but also other minority women or even your family or friends. These statistics need attention and advocacy from healthcare providers who understand challenges Black women face, and I am destined to do so. I want to create spaces where my future patients feel seen and respected. I also want them to be vulnerable with me and problems that they experience and not feel judged. Oftentimes, Black women's pain is minimized and their concerns get dismissed. I want to be the physician who listens and try to find a way for patients to get the proper care they need even if they aren't serviced by me. Through my involvement with organizations like the Southern Black Girls and Women's Consortium, Black Student Leadership Network, Black Girls White Coat, GirlTrek and the Future MDs program, I am already working to address health disparities and create pathways for other young Black women interested in healthcare careers. These platforms allow me to advocate for policy changes, raise awareness about health issues affecting our community, and mentor other aspiring healthcare professionals who share similar backgrounds as me. Moreover, I am currently contributing to this field through my research at Florida A&M University on "The synthesis of N-(4-Trifluoromethylthio Benzoyl)-5-ethyl-1,2,3,6-Tetrahydropyridine, A potential Anti-Breast Cancer Agent." This project, has earned recognition as a two-time winner at our school's annual symposium, and it represents my involvement in creating potential compounds that could work as a breast cancer treatment. Working on the synthesis of this potential anti-breast cancer agent has further my interest and knowledge of drug development and commitment to addressing cancer disparities through clinical practice and research trials. As for future works, I plan to partner with other businesses or organizations to create safer menstrual products for women that have conditions like heavy bleeding, cramps, rashes, or endometriosis. I would also like to provide them in low-income areas, especially for minority women to have access to them with no cost. This not only helps the women that will use them but also the planet as well. In essence, I believe that women's health care should be equal to all women, no matter what race, size, or class you belong in and I plan to make sure of that. I hope to not only provide medical care for Black women but also be living proof for other young girls that look like me that they can conquer in research and be advocates for their future as well.
