Jorian Kuran Harris (Shugg) Helping Heart Foundation Scholarship
My name is Jeremy and I am a DePaul University junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with Hospitality Leadership and Sports Business minors. Since my 15th year I have been working in hotels starting at a California boutique property and currently serving as front desk agent at The Gwen Hotel which is a luxury Marriott-branded hotel located in downtown Chicago. Hospitality serves as my life purpose because it allows me to deliver professional care and empathy and precise service to others.
This scholarship funding will play a crucial role in supporting my academic progression. My current situation as a full-time student working near full-time hours in a demanding Chicago hotel environment is both a rare opportunity and a difficult situation. The financial support would provide relief from tuition costs and living costs so I could dedicate my time to hands-on learning activities including shadowing our concierge and rooms coordinator teams for improved preparation of future leadership roles. My dream includes establishing a boutique hotel collection that emphasizes genuine community hospitality while promoting sustainability alongside personalized guest design.
My ultimate goal is to reshape how hotels interact with their local communities. I envision developing spaces that allow visitors to feel connected to the local culture by giving employees stakeholder status and delivering hospitality services that exceed luxury standards to create enduring positive effects on people and their environment. I aim to merge my business knowledge with operational expertise and service dedication to build hospitality models that maintain both heart and innovative approaches.
The most difficult challenge I encountered began during my first months living in Chicago. After moving from California I struggled to adapt to Chicago while handling my job responsibilities alongside my academic requirements. The winter season was extremely harsh while I struggled to connect with people in the city. During my late-night walk back from work I felt completely exhausted as I wondered whether moving to this city had been the right decision. The experience had left me feeling exhausted both physically and mentally because I felt isolated from the world.
My ability to push through that difficult moment was possible because I made myself present the following day. I attended my class. I started my work shift. My search for support networks led me to discover both college friends who became close associates and supportive colleagues alongside academic instructors who recognized my potential. The ability to persist exists beyond the availability of unlimited energy because it requires moving ahead when your body tells you to stop. The lesson I learned from this experience stays with me to this day and guides me during every new challenge I encounter.
This scholarship will provide both financial relief and a confirmation that dedicated work combined with visionary thinking holds value. I will maintain my drive to succeed because I want to build a better future for the hospitality industry. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to apply for this scholarship.
Sylvester Taylor "Invictus" Hospitality Scholarship
WinnerSince childhood I have maintained an intense interest in hospitality, both as a business concept and the essential people who operate within it. At age 15, I started working at different hotels, which included both Four Points by Sheraton, and The Gwen Hotel, a luxury property in downtown Chicago. Through my studies at DePaul University, I have learned that hospitality extends beyond service because it provides the foundation to develop valuable experiences and make positive life changes.
I will use my hospitality passion to build a community that welcomes everyone while motivating purpose in every guest encounter. I understand that perfect service does not exist, but the essence of great hospitality relies on showing empathy. I aim to establish a hotel collection that puts people above financial gains by employing locals and investing in staff development and providing a secure environment for travelers and residents. The combination of emotional intelligence with cultural awareness and ethical leadership will turn my properties into economic drivers and social hubs.
The hospitality sector creates special avenues to tackle worldwide difficulties including sustainability and human trafficking. The future hotels I plan to operate will practice sustainable operations through environmentally friendly construction alongside fair employment standards and local partnerships. Hospitality functions as a tool for youth empowerment and second chances through its ability to provide jobs in underrepresented communities and mentorship programs for interns while creating career advancement opportunities in the hospitality industry.
My enthusiasm for hospitality stems from my dedication to connecting with other people. The simple act of checking in, hosting events or preparing food holds the power to create feelings of recognition and worth and genuine concern in people's lives. My true impact will be achieved through leadership or ownership or advocacy work that scales the feeling I have now. Overall, I plan to make a positive impact on the world by using my voice to advocate for those who need it most.
