Bio

My name is Jeremiah "JJ", and I’m an 18-year-old student pursuing a degree in Athletic Training, with hopes of one day working with athletes to help them stay healthy, perform at their best, and bounce back stronger from injuries. Sports have played a major role in shaping who I am, both on and off the mat. I am of Portuguese and Puerto Rican descent, raised in a blended and supportive family made up of my mother, stepfather, step-sister, older brother, and half-sister. Though my early years were marked by the absence and disappointment of a biological father who was never truly present, I learned to overcome those struggles through perseverance and by turning to sports as my outlet and safe space. Since the age of 11, I’ve been dedicated to football and wrestling. Through every win and loss, I’ve gained discipline, mental toughness, and a deep respect for teamwork and leadership. These values are what drive me both in the classroom and on the wrestling mat, where I’ll be competing at the university level. My experiences growing up gave me a strong sense of empathy and a desire to support others, especially athletes facing physical or emotional challenges. That’s what led me to choose Athletic Training as my career path. I want to be someone who athletes can count on, both for expert care and genuine support. Receiving a scholarship would not only help me achieve my academic and athletic goals, but also support my journey toward becoming a role model for others who may come from complex or challenging backgrounds.

What first drew me to wrestling was the challenge. I started at age 11, and right away I realized it was unlike any other sport. Wrestling doesn’t let you hide behind a team or depend on others to carry you. It’s just you, your opponent, and your determination. That intensity pushed me to test my limits and grow not only as an athlete but as a person. From the start, wrestling demanded more from me than any other activity. It required me to dig deep, stay disciplined, and constantly work to improve. Through early morning workouts, long practices, and intense competitions, I learned how to keep pushing even when I felt exhausted or discouraged. Wrestling has shaped my mindset in powerful ways, helping me develop focus, patience, and a stronger sense of who I am. The sport also taught me how to deal with both victory and defeat. When I won, I learned to stay humble. When I lost, I learned how to bounce back and work harder. Every match was an opportunity to grow, and over time I began to apply that same attitude to other areas of my life. Whether it’s handling pressure in school, staying consistent with my goals, or managing stress in a healthy way, the lessons I’ve learned on the mat continue to support me. Wrestling gave me a sense of identity and belonging that I didn’t always have growing up. My biological father was never truly present in my life, which created emotional challenges early on. I was lucky to have a supportive stepfather and a blended family that helped guide me, but I still needed a place to process what I was going through. Wrestling became that outlet. It gave me structure and helped me build confidence. I learned how to take control of my own path and surround myself with people who believe in me, including coaches and teammates who became like family. Now, as an 18-year-old student-athlete pursuing a degree in Athletic Training, I can see clearly how much wrestling has impacted me. The sport didn’t just give me physical strength. It helped me develop the mental and emotional strength I needed to overcome challenges and stay focused on my future. My goal is to become an athletic trainer so I can support other athletes, especially those who might be going through personal struggles, just like I was. I want to be the kind of person they can count on for both expert care and real encouragement. Wrestling has shaped the way I approach life, relationships, and my future career. It has made me more determined, more compassionate, and more aware of the power of resilience. That’s why I’m proud to represent the sport and carry its lessons with me, wherever I go.
