As a young child, I was exposed to volunteerism by my parents. As a result, I feel that it is important for representatives from community service organizations to visit elementary schools so that students can comprehend at an early age how important it is to give back to the community. I believe that children from disadvantaged areas can benefit and learn valuable life skills from those who perform community service. In my opinion, people need to realize that there are several ways in which they can perform community service. For instance, a person can start a class in which a group of boys are taught the proper way to tie a necktie. Other examples of community service would be to teach middle school students how to plan meals or how to budget their money. These are skills that can assist them long after they become adults. Over the years, I have volunteered to help my community through various organizations. As a member of the Youth Council, I participated in voter registration drives, beach cleanup and recycling events. I also participated in the Center of Hope's food and clothing drive for the homeless community. For the Culver City Education Foundation, I delivered yard signs to the various donors. As a member of my school's Varsity Club, I would read to elementary school students and participate in food and clothing drives for the homeless community. My most significant takeaway from performing community service is that there are a lot of people who are unfortunate in California. Because homelessness is such a drastic issue in California, I would like to help develop innovative solutions to end homelessness, especially for our veterans and those who are suffering from mental challenges. My career goals include owning my own business and being able to provide jobs in underserved communities. Additionally, I would like to create a mentoring program so that high school girls and boys can interact with professionals in addition to gaining knowledge and work experience. As a second year college student at the University of Alabama (UA), I have participated in several service projects. These include the BSU Salvation Army Service Day, The House Tuscaloosa Literacy Center, UA Big Days of Service, and Vision Days. Because I have been blessed with a loving family, I believe it is important for me to help out in any way that I can. I learned that I had other talents and achieved a 4.0 grade point average during that time. I was also on the winning team as a member of the National Black MBA Association Leaders of Tomorrow Business Case Plan competition. I consistently made the school’s honor roll list and received numerous awards for academics. I was a member of the National Honor Society and Onori Honor Society and a contributing writer to my school’s newspaper. I served as a member and Treasurer of the NAACP Youth Council, and the membership vice president for the Entrepreneurship Club. I also participated in multiple food and clothing drives for the unsheltered. By not making the basketball team, I focused harder on my academics and was accepted by 21 colleges. I am currently a sophomore at the University of Alabama majoring in Business Management with a concentration in Entrepreneurship and a double minor in Real Estate and Blount Scholars, respectively. Presently, my overall grade point average is 3.5 and I am actively involved in several on-campus organizations such as the Black Student Union, Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, Black Business Student Association, Honors Action, Student Fashion Association, and the Business Honors Program, just to name a few. I show gratitude by thanking God for his many blessings and asking Him to bless others. I live with gratitude by appreciating the gifts and talents that have been given to me. I appreciate the fact that I have parents who love and support me. To show gratitude for all the sacrifices they have made for me, I make sure that I am an obedient and respectful child to my parents. I am grateful that my family and I have remained healthy throughout this pandemic. I appreciate that we have a roof over our heads, food to eat, and transportation to get us to the places we need to go to. I am grateful that I have grown up in a peaceful environment with my sibling. I am grateful that I have had the opportunity to attend a good high school that has caring faculty members. I am grateful that I will have the opportunity to further my education at a university. I am grateful that I have parents who encourage me to strive for excellence. I am grateful for my parents who tell me that I have the talent to be anything that I dream I can be. Lastly, I am grateful that I live in a country where I have freedom of speech and freedom to dream.

I am motivated by the life lesson that my parents have taught me. My parents encourage and inspire me to do my best on a daily basis. They have always taught me that I am intelligent and have the intellectual capacity to compete with anyone on a level playing field. My parents constantly remind me to never take education for granted and to remember that we live in the greatest country on the planet. They are my strongest supporters and my biggest cheerleaders. My parents are hardworking, law abiding citizens who have overcome many obstacles in their lives and work careers. Yet, they never become discouraged. No matter how many roadblocks they encounter, my parents always treat people with decency and respect. In their spare time, they also serve as volunteers at various nonprofit organizations. They are the reason I became involved in volunteering. My parents believe that I should be a good representative for not only our family but also for our entire race. They embolden me to think that I can achieve anything to which I set my mind. Although my parents did not grow up with the finer things in life, they still exude pride and dignity like kings and queens. Their confidence in me and themselves motivates me to succeed and to make them proud. My parents have been great role models for my brother in me. As long as I have my parents in my corner, I will always have the motivation to be successful in life.

Confidence means that I can be unafraid to express my respectful opinion in a classroom discussion when no other person in the room looks like me. Confidence is also when I am able to show how intelligent I am and break down stereotypes. Confidence is speaking articulately when others expect me to use slang. Confidence is being proud of my features, my skin color, my hair texture and my heritage. Confidence means being myself and not trying to look like what is considered mainstream. Confidence is being proud of where I originated from and not being ashamed that my history included slavery. Confidence is proving others wrong when the odds are sometimes stacked against me. I work on being more confident by studying my history and learning all I can about the contributions that my ancestors have made to this country. I also work on being more confident by continuously trying to improve myself and by learning something new everyday. I was confident enough to compete and earn a position on my high school Academic Decathlon team. As a result, I am the only African American on the team. I am a confident person because my parents instilled this belief in me. They are intelligent and confident people who expect me to excel in life. Because of my parents, I will continue to be confident that I am as intelligent as anyone else in a classroom and can learn anything when placed on a level playing field. I am fortunate to have parents who believe that I am destined for success. Therefore, I see no reason to be anything other than confident in myself and my abilities.

I have been taught that saving your money and investing when you are young is the wisest decision that one could make. As I have gotten older, the message seems to resonate with me more and more. As someone who is aware of the damage that the global pandemic has caused, I believe that the message about saving and investing should be placed at the forefront. A plethora of people lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic crisis. As such, these individuals are unable to sustain their previous quality of life as their ability to maintain a stable income no longer exists. I have taken it upon myself to educate my peers and other young people about the importance of saving money for a rainy day. I have been fortunate to be able to take several courses as well as participate in various workshops regarding saving money and other financial literacy tips. The knowledge that I have obtained from the aforementioned has enabled me to empower others on the topic. It is my sincere hope that our younger generation will eventually become smart money managers and wise investors.

First and foremost, I am joyous that so far my family and I have remained healthy during the pandemic. What also brings me joy is when my family is gathered together and we are having a great time. This can be as simple as a friendly game of Uno or Connect 4. Prior to the pandemic, we hardly had a chance to sit together for a family meal for an extended period of time. Our school and work schedules continuously kept us on the move. Since I am preparing to leave home and attend college, I definitely try to spend plenty of time with my immediate family. When my family supports me at my extracurricular events, it brings me joy. They are my strongest supporters and biggest cheerleaders. It makes me elated to know that I can always depend on my family during good times and bad times. They encourage me and my brother. I am truly a blessed individual. I seek out joy by associating with positive minded people. By nature, I am a positive person who enjoys having positive conversations, reading positive material and listening to positive music. I feel that there is already too much negativity in the world. I definitely do not need or want to contribute to negativism. Therefore, I will continue to seek out joy in my life.

I do a variety of things to make my family, friends, and other people in my life feel loved. I not only tell them that I love them but I show them that I love them. I show my parents that I love them by representing our family in a positive way every time I leave our house. I also show them that I love them by being a good example and role model for my younger brother. My parents know that I love them because I am obedient and respectful to them. I show my brother that I love him by spending time with him even though I have a rigorous high school curriculum and schedule. My friends know that they are loved when I remember their birthdays by calling or sending a text message to them. I also try to provide a listening ear to those who are having a rough period in their lives. I also show my love by being a confidante and being encouraging to family and friends. I make sure that my family and friends know that they can count on me if they need assistance. If anyone in my life is sick, I will check on them to let them know that they are loved. I am a naturally loving person. Therefore, it is easy for me to show my love to family, friends, and other people in my life.

I would like my legacy to be that I made a positive difference in the world. I have been fortunate to have two wonderful, attentive parents who care about others and believe in education. My favorite way to help others is to share knowledge or information by encouraging them to read books to improve their lives. If I become aware of something that can benefit another person, then I will share that information with them. I will do this whether it concerns education, finance, health, etc. I believe that sharing knowledge is a way to make the world a better place and a more informed society. Because of the creation of technology such as cell phones and tablets, I feel that too many young people have migrated away from reading books. Early in life, I was encouraged to read a multitude of books so that I would be knowledgeable regarding a variety of topics. As a middle school student, I assisted the Kindergarten teacher by reading to the students. As a member of the Varsity Club at my high school, I have volunteered to read to elementary school students. After I graduate from college, my plan is to help children from disenfranchised areas who need assistance in reading and mathematics. I will encourage them to read books so that they can learn about places outside of their community. It is my hope that reading will help the children develop good critical thinking skills in addition to improving their reading comprehension skills. Personally, I feel that sharing knowledge and helping others will never go out of style. Therefore, I will continue to encourage others to read books to improve their lives.

I have always been taught to treat people based on how I would like to be treated. Treating people with honor, decency, and respect will help promote peace and harmony. Appreciating a person for who they are is a responsibility that I support wholeheartedly. I am involved in organizations that make a difference and promote unity. As a Student Ambassador, I serve as a guide to prospective students during the school day by reaching across racial lines and collaborating with students from different races and nationalities. I try to become familiar with each prospective student by personalizing their experience and showing them that our school is a very caring and harmonious institution. As the Membership Vice President for the Entrepreneurship Club, I try to make a difference in the lives of others. During membership meetings, I discuss the importance of recruiting potential members that reflect the makeup of our country, state, and city. I truly feel that a diverse membership base will only help our organization to grow and expand the dialogue to engage in more meaningful discussions. My parents and their life lessons have motivated and inspired me to do my best on a daily basis. They have always taught me that I have the intellect to compete with anyone on a level playing field. My parents are hardworking and have overcome many obstacles in their lives and work careers. No matter how many roadblocks they encounter, my parents always treat people with decency and respect. They also serve as volunteers at various nonprofit organizations. Their confidence in me motivates me to succeed. With my parents in my corner, I will always be motivated to be successful.

I feel that giving is important because it is my responsibility as a human being and as a citizen of the United States to help someone who is in need. Our country is known worldwide for providing assistance to those in need. Therefore, I believe that I should follow suit. I am fortunate to have two parents who have instilled in me that I am supposed to be of service to others. My parents volunteer their time in various organizations and encouraged me and my younger brother to begin volunteering at a young age. They have been excellent examples of why volunteering is important. I have been able to give back in several different ways. At my school, I am a member of the Varsity Club in which I donated canned goods to families in need. I also volunteered through my church by helping to deliver care packages to the homeless. As a sophomore, I also volunteered at elementary and middle schools by reading to students. At my local library, I have volunteered by restocking the book shelves and providing customer service to patrons. Because I am fortunate and blessed to live in the United States, I foresee that I will continue to be involved in volunteerism. I believe it is the right thing for me to do and I believe that it will help make the world a better place.

When I didn’t make the basketball team, I was unsure whether I would try out for another team sport. In order to stay active, I tried out for the school volleyball team and earned a spot on the team. I had never played volleyball but I actually discovered that I was good at it. I am now a member of the varsity volleyball team. By making the volleyball team, I learned that I had other talents. I show gratitude by thanking God for His many blessings and asking Him to bless others. I live with gratitude by appreciating the gifts and talents that have been given to me. Confidence means that I can be unafraid to express my respectful opinion in a classroom discussion when no other person in the room looks like me. Confidence is also when I am able to show how intelligent I am and break down stereotypes. Confidence is speaking articulately when others expect me to use slang. Confidence is being proud of my features, my skin color, my hair texture and my heritage. Confidence means being myself and not trying to look like what is considered mainstream. Confidence is being proud of where I originated from and not being ashamed that my history included slavery. Confidence is proving others wrong when the odds are sometimes stacked against me. I work on being more confident by studying my history and learning all I can about the contributions that my ancestors have made to this country. I also work on being more confident by continuously trying to improve myself and by learning something new everyday. I was confident enough to compete and earn a position on my high school Academic Decathlon team. As a result, I am the only African American on the team. I am a confident person because my parents instilled this belief in me. They are intelligent and confident people who expect me to excel in life. Because of my parents, I will continue to be confident that I am as intelligent as anyone else in a classroom and can learn anything when placed on a level playing field. I am fortunate to have parents who believe that I am destined for success. Therefore, I see no reason to be anything other than confident in myself and my abilities.

A topic I am passionate about is homelessness. As a resident of Southern California, I have witnessed firsthand the seriousness of the homelessness issues. Because the situation has totally spiraled out of control, local officials are scrambling to find ways to solve the problem. The conditions of those who are homeless saddens me to a great degree. There are many veterans who are homeless in California. I find this unacceptable. To that end, I am involved in several different organizations that revolve around helping others in need. I feel that my purpose is to assist in any way possible with this issue and to brainstorm and find innovative ways to bring the homelessness problem to an end. Another topic that I am passionate about is managing money at a young age. I have been taught that saving your money is the wisest decision that one could make. As I have gotten older, the message seems to resonate with me more and more. As someone who is aware of the damage that the global pandemic has caused, I believe that the message about saving and investing should be placed at the forefront. A plethora of people lost their jobs as a result of the pandemic crisis. As such, these individuals are unable to sustain a quality of life as their ability to maintain stable income no longer exists. I have taken it upon myself to educate young people about the importance of saving money. I have been fortunate to be able to take several courses as well as participate in various workshops regarding saving money. The knowledge that I have obtained from the aforementioned has enabled me to empower others on the topic. It is my sincere hope that our younger generation will eventually become smart money managers and wise investors.

Because gender and racial diversity are very important in our society, I strive to get along with different people regardless of their race, color, creed, or national origin. I have always been taught to treat people based on how I would like to be treated. Treating people with honor, decency, and respect will help promote peace and harmony. Appreciating a person for who they are is a responsibility that I support wholeheartedly. I am involved in organizations that make a difference and promote unity. As a Student Ambassador, I serve as a guide to prospective students during the school day by reaching across racial lines and collaborating with students from different races and nationalities. I try to become familiar with each prospective student by personalizing their experience and showing them that our school is a very caring and harmonious institution. I do a variety of things to make my family, friends, and other people in my life feel loved. Not only do I tell them that I love them but I show them that I love them. I show my parents that I love them by representing our family in a positive way every time I leave our house. I also show them that I love them by being a good example and role model for my younger brother. My parents know that I love them because I am obedient and respectful to them. I show my brother that I love him by spending time with him even though I have a rigorous high school curriculum and schedule. My friends know that they are loved when I remember their birthdays by calling or sending a text message to them. I also try to provide a listening ear to those who are having a rough period in their lives. I also show my love by being their confidante and by being encouraging to family and friends. I make sure that my family and friends know that they can count on me if they need assistance. If anyone in my life is sick, I will check on them to let them know that they are loved. I am a naturally loving person. Therefore, it is easy for me to show my love to family, friends, and other people in my life.

First and foremost, I am joyous that so far my family and I have remained healthy during the pandemic. What also brings me joy is when my family is gathered together and we are having a great time. This can be as simple as a friendly game of Uno or Connect4. Prior to the pandemic, my family rarely had time to sit together for a family meal for an extended period of time. Our school and work schedules continuously kept us on the move. Since I am preparing to leave home and attend college, I definitely try to spend plenty of time with my immediate family. When my family supports me at my extracurricular events, it brings me joy. They are my strongest supporters and biggest cheerleaders. It makes me elated to know that I can always depend on my family during good times and the bad. I am truly a blessed individual. I seek out joy by associating with positive minded people. By nature, I am a positive person who enjoys having positive conversations, reading positive material and listening to positive music. I feel that there is already too much negativity in the world. I definitely do not need or want to contribute to negativism. Therefore, I will continue to seek out joy in my life.

My favorite way to help others is to share knowledge or information by encouraging them to read books to improve their lives. If I become aware of something that can benefit another person, then I will share that information with them. I will do this whether it concerns education, finance, health, etc. I believe that sharing knowledge is a way to make the world a better place and a more informed society. Because of the creation of technology such as cell phones and tablets, I feel that too many young people have migrated away from reading books. Early in life, I was encouraged to read a multitude of books so that I would be knowledgeable regarding a variety of topics. As a middle school student, I assisted the Kindergarten teacher by reading to the students. As a member of the Varsity Club at my high school, I have volunteered to read to elementary school students. After I graduate from college, my plan is to help children from disenfranchised areas who need assistance in reading and mathematics. I will encourage them to read books so that they can learn about places outside of their community. It is my hope that reading will help the children develop good critical thinking skills in addition to improving their reading comprehension skills. Personally, I feel that sharing knowledge and helping others will never go out of style. Therefore, I will continue to encourage others to read books to improve their lives.

A piece of art that inspired me is Francisco Goya’s, The Third of May. It is a beautiful piece of artwork that conveyed the main features of Italian Romanticism. The thing that stood out to me about this work of art would be the overall emphasis on emotion and individualism. The Third of May was painted during the Romanticism period. Romanticism is a specific art movement that enabled individuals to think freely all while engaged in freedom of expression. It laid a foundation for intangible ideas and was a period whereby one thought outside the box. To some degree, people look at Romanticism and come to appreciate the fact that it had a significant effect on literature, visual art, and music. Romanticism, in my opinion, was unique in and of itself. The Third of May was completed in 1814 and is an oil painting. It sought to commemorate Spanish resistance to Napoleon’s armies during the occupation of 1808 in the Peninsular War. In this painting, there is a civil war in Spain in which the Napoleon army and the Spanish government worked with Napoleon to fight against the Spanish rebels. Goya shows an intense scene in which all the humanity, pain, suffering, and death are depicted upfront. He shows us the faces of the Spanish rebels and a dehumanized Napoleon army. To further intensify this scene, the Spanish rebels are being assassinated by the Napoleon army. This work of art is certainly uplifting to any individual who loves and appreciates art. My parents and their life lessons have motivated, encouraged, and inspired me to do my best on a daily basis. They have taught me that I am intelligent and have the intellectual capacity to compete with anyone on a level playing field. My parents constantly remind me to never take education for granted and to remember that we live in the greatest country on the planet. They are my strongest supporters and my biggest cheerleaders. My parents are hardworking, law abiding citizens who have overcome many obstacles in their lives and work careers. Yet, they never become discouraged. They embolden me to do everything in my power to eliminate stereotypes. Although they did not grow up with the finer things in life, my parents still exude pride and dignity like kings and queens. I feel that giving is important because it is my responsibility as a human being and as a citizen of the United States to help someone who is in need. Our country is known worldwide for providing assistance to those in need. Therefore, I believe that I should follow suit. I am fortunate to have two parents who have instilled in me that I am supposed to be of service to others. My parents volunteer their time in various organizations and encouraged me and my younger brother to begin volunteering at a young age. They have been excellent examples of why volunteering is important. I have been able to give back in several different ways. At my school, I am a member of the Varsity Club in which I donated canned goods to families in need. I also volunteered through my church by helping to deliver care packages to the homeless. As a high school sophomore, I volunteered at elementary and middle schools by reading to students. At my local library, I have volunteered by restocking the book shelves and providing customer service to patrons. Because I am fortunate and blessed to live in the United States, I foresee that I will always be involved in volunteerism. I believe it is the right thing for me to do and I believe that it will help make the world a better place.
