    Women in Nursing Scholarship
Being part of an African American, low-income, and immigrant community has shown me how minorities are often brushed aside. This experience has instilled in me a dedication and hunger to combat this treatment, especially in healthcare. Witnessing firsthand the racial disparities and biases that minorities face has fueled my resolve to advocate for equitable treatment. Growing up in a community that has struggled significantly has shaped my morals, empathy, and compassion, driving me to go above and beyond for all individuals, regardless of their background. My passion for nursing stems from a desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, particularly women of color who often experience inadequate care. As a medical assistant at an OBGYN office, I have observed how these women are treated in healthcare settings. Many encounter biases that affect the quality of care they receive, leading to feelings of frustration and neglect. This has solidified my commitment to pursue a career in nursing, where I can be a voice for those who are often unheard. I aspire to specialize in the OBGYN or women's medical field because I believe that every woman deserves compassionate and respectful care throughout her healthcare journey. Women face unique challenges, and it is crucial to address their needs with sensitivity and understanding. My goal is to create a safe space for women, especially women of color, where they can feel empowered to speak up about their health concerns without fear of judgment or bias. The Women in Nursing Scholarship will greatly aid my future contributions to the healthcare community. It will equip me with the resources necessary to understand, advocate for, and provide the best care possible to my patients, irrespective of race, sex, religion, or background. This scholarship will help me obtain the education and training needed to serve diverse populations and address the unique and evolving challenges within the healthcare field. With this scholarship, I will enhance my ability to adapt quickly and utilize critical thinking to deliver the best possible care, particularly to minorities or those in need who are often overlooked. It will support my goal of using my leadership to help eliminate implicit racial bias in healthcare, particularly concerning women. The healthcare field should be a place where no one faces disparities or unfair treatment. Even as the medical field evolves and innovates, disparities persist. I hope this scholarship will fund my education and empower me to spread a crucial message: the world is watching, and we must strive for equality for all, with no exceptions. By becoming a nurse in the Labor and Delivery or OBGYN field, I aim to advocate for women and ensure they receive the compassionate care they deserve.
    Big Picture Scholarship
The movie that has had the greatest impact on my life is The Lovely Bones, a powerful exploration of loss, trauma, and the resilience of women. The film tells the heartbreaking story of Susie Salmon, a young girl who is murdered and watches from her personal heaven as her family struggles to cope with the aftermath. Susie embodies innocence and dreams cut short, showing the profound effects of violence on individuals and communities. Her mother, Abigail, navigates overwhelming grief, which alters her relationships and sense of self. Watching these women navigate their pain deeply resonated with me. I felt a strong connection to their struggles, making me acutely aware of the immense challenges women face throughout their lives—especially in vulnerable moments. Abigail’s journey through despair and her fight to reclaim her life serve as a powerful reminder of the resilience women possess, even in the face of unimaginable trauma. This portrayal reinforced my understanding of the importance of advocacy and support for women facing similar situations, reminding me that their stories must be heard and validated. Similarly, Shutter Island explores the complexities of mental health and the stigmatization of those who suffer. The film follows a U.S. Marshal but also highlights the experiences of female patients, particularly Rachel Solando, who is trapped in a cycle of trauma and misunderstanding. Rachel’s story reflects the societal biases that prevent individuals from receiving compassionate care. The way she is treated by the system underscores the urgent need for reform in how we address mental health, particularly for women, who often bear the brunt of stigma surrounding their psychological struggles. The experiences of Susie, Abigail, and Rachel have profoundly influenced my desire to pursue a career in women’s health, particularly as an OBGYN or in labor and delivery. Witnessing the emotional turmoil and vulnerabilities that women experience—especially during significant life events like childbirth—has instilled in me a commitment to provide support during these critical moments. I have seen how racial disparities and biases can lead to inadequate care for women during pregnancy and delivery, motivating me to ensure that every woman receives the compassionate care she deserves. Being part of an African American, low-income, and immigrant community has shaped my morals, empathy, and compassion. I have witnessed the struggles of women trying to navigate a healthcare system that frequently overlooks their needs. Barriers to access are often compounded by factors like economic instability, lack of education, and cultural misunderstandings. This drives me to go above and beyond for all patients, regardless of their background. I believe that every woman deserves quality care, particularly during such a vulnerable time as labor. The Big Picture Scholarship will play a crucial role in my journey to contribute meaningfully to the healthcare community. It will provide me with the resources necessary to understand, advocate for, and deliver the best care possible to my patients, irrespective of race, sex, religion, or background. This scholarship will enhance my ability to adapt quickly and utilize critical thinking to deliver effective care, particularly to minorities or those in need who are often overlooked. Through my commitment to women’s health, I aim to honor the stories of those affected by trauma, like Susie, Abigail, and Rachel, by ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met. I am determined to be a part of the change that makes healthcare equitable for everyone. By pursuing a career in women’s health, I hope to contribute to a future where all women, regardless of their circumstances, receive the care and respect they deserve—especially during the transformative experience of childbirth.

As a kid, I hated to read, but ironically, English became my favorite subject. My journey began in 8th grade when Ms. Vaca introduced us to The Outsiders and One of Us is Lying. These books sparked a desire in me to read more, and from that point on, I knew English class would always be my favorite. In my freshman year, I was lucky to have Mrs. Brewster for Honors English, and then again for AP Seminar in my sophomore year. As someone who has always aimed for straight A's, I was determined to excel. Mrs. Brewster often praised my writing, telling me how talented I was and that I would achieve great things. She loved that I wrote so much—my essays were often lengthy because I enjoyed sharing my opinions and ideas. Mrs. Brewster pushed me to do my best while reminding me not to be too hard on myself. She was my go-to person in school, always approachable and supportive. However, the first week of sophomore year, I faced a huge setback: I did poorly on a math test. Getting a C was a shock, and I panicked. With strict parents, I feared their disappointment and felt like a failure. I struggled to cope, trying to hide my feelings behind jokes and positivity. But that day in class, Mrs. Brewster noticed something was off. When I entered her classroom, she asked what was wrong. I denied it at first, but she was persistent. "You’re not yourself today," she said. I was taken aback that she could see through my facade. Most people wouldn’t have thought twice about a grade, especially since the year had just started. But to me, it felt like my worth was tied to my grades. I finally opened up to Mrs. Brewster about how overwhelmed I felt with school, sports, and family responsibilities. As I spoke, tears rolled down my cheeks before I even realized I was crying. Mrs. Brewster listened closely, and she validated my feelings, telling me I was doing an amazing job despite my challenges. She hugged me and made me feel seen in a way I had never experienced before. To help me, she exempted me from the beginning of the year essay, knowing I needed to focus on my math studies. With her encouragement, I turned things around and had an A in math by the next week. By the end of the year, I had all A's. Now, as a senior taking all AP classes, I’ve learned to manage my time better and understand that it’s okay to slip up. Mrs. Brewster’s support made me realize that my worth isn’t solely based on academic excellence. I still strive for success—graduating with a GPA above 4.3 and serving as class president—but I also recognize the importance of compassion and checking in on others. Whenever I see Mrs. Brewster now, we always have meaningful conversations and check up on each other. I am incredibly grateful for her belief in me and the motivation she gave me. Mrs. Brewster truly changed my life, showing me the power of care and understanding. Honestly, she might have saved me from going down a negative path on my mental health.
