Bio

Hi, my name is Jennifer. I am set to graduate this May from Central Carolina Community College with an Associate in Human Services Technology: Addiction & Recovery Studies. My passion lies in supporting those facing addiction, fostering empowerment, and challenging societal stigmas. With over two decades of leadership, from managing janitorial services to leading projects with an international non-profit ministry, where I honed skills in teamwork and community engagement. Transitioning to Lees McRae University for a Bachelor of Science in Human Services, I'm concurrently working towards becoming a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor. I've also been offered a teaching position at Central Carolina Community College, aligning with my passion for knowledge-sharing. Your foundation's support will not only propel my academic journey but also contribute to empowering individuals to overcome adversity. I'm eager to discuss my story and aspirations. Thank you for considering me.

    • Dream career goals:

My first goal with a human services degree is to become a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC). Currently, I am in the process of logging my education hours through Learning Builder and working toward my registration (CADC-R) with the North Carolina Addictions Specialist Professional Practice Board (NCASPPB). After graduation from Central Carolina Community College in May, I plan to seek employment and supervision in the substance use setting while I complete my hours for the status of Intern (CADC-I). Once complete, I plan to become a (fully) Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC). While earning the substance use counseling certification, I plan to further my education for advanced employment options and a broader competency in the human services field. Also, I plan to accept the small part-time teaching position that the director of my program recently offered. My goal is to help people; whether that be through substance use counseling, teaching those who wish to enter a “helping” profession, or perhaps even both. Either way, I wish to further my education so that I will be a better prepared, more equipped, and highly competent professional upon entering the field of Human Services.

    Alexander Hipple Recovery Scholarship
Over the past six years, my journey of recovery has been marked by resilience, determination, and a constant struggle to overcome the shadow of my past. During active addiction, I found myself entangled with the law, facing drug-related charges that labeled me a "felon" and, in turn, made it significantly harder for me to envision a brighter future. This label has been a heavy burden, one that I initially believed defined me and rendered any efforts to move forward futile. It took a profound moment in Haiti, where I was working in the ministry during a period of sobriety, for me to recognize my potential to help others. However, a subsequent injury and a relapse pulled me back into the grip of addiction. It was my father's words that served as a turning point. He spoke a truth that resonated deeply: "Jennifer, if you were even half as determined to do something constructive with your life as you are now being so destructive with it, you'd be unstoppable." Those words echoed in my mind during 120 days in lock-up, prompting me to make the pivotal decision to enter treatment. Today, I am proud to say I have surpassed six years of sobriety. Despite my achievements in recovery, the "felon" label has been a persistent obstacle, demanding that I work twice as hard to prove my worth. The judgmental looks and whispers persist, even as I take pride in my work ethic, honesty, and loyalty. As a supervisor, the fear of being unfairly blamed due to my past intensifies, adding an extra layer of complexity to my life. Nevertheless, I am determined not to let this label define me. I strive daily to transform my past weaknesses into strengths, proving that I am more than the sum of my mistakes. Two years ago, I decided to rekindle my passion for helping others, recognizing the transformative power of surrender in my own journey. I am on the cusp of transitioning to Lees McRae University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Human Services with a specialization in Substance Use. Simultaneously, I am working towards becoming a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor (CADC), driven by my commitment to assisting individuals in overcoming addiction. Beyond academics, I have been offered a teaching position at Central Carolina Community College, aligning perfectly with my desire to share knowledge and foster growth in others. My aspirations extend beyond personal success; I aim to be a beacon of hope and a testament to the transformative power of recovery, challenging societal limitations and making a lasting impact in the field of Human Services. I believe I am an excellent candidate for funding because my journey, marked by resilience and determination, reflects a deep commitment to service. Your support will not only propel my academic journey at Lees McRae but will contribute to the broader cause of empowering individuals to overcome adversity and thrive. Depending on my financial standing upon completion of my bachelor's, I will consider and possibly pursue a master's degree, further solidifying my ability to contribute meaningfully to my chosen field. As a student, I've thrived in my academic pursuit. I have maintained a 4.00 GPA all four semesters, I won the Excellent Student Award of 2024, I am a member of the Phi Theta Kappa honors society, and I plan to sustain this level of excellence as I continue my studies. Join me as I help others break the chains of addiction, shatter the confinement of stigma, and show individuals that they can surpass the limitations imposed upon them. Thank you for your consideration!
