As an Early Childhood Education professional I take the rights of staff and children very seriously. I have witnessed children being mistreated verbally and physically. It is a very sad and real truth that this is happening. I see these problems as being completely against California’s vision of creating a trauma free environment where children are able to thrive and grow resilience.
Children are being abused in preschools and there are children witnessing the abuse. The teachers who are mishandling the children are being allowed back into the classrooms with the children they have abused. In addition, teachers allowing children to play with rusted kitchen pans.
I am completely outraged to the point of having to drop the class I was enrolled in and stop my volunteer hours. I also contacted the police to report the child abuse as well as the administration at the schools I have witnessed child abuse at. With more education I will continue to fight for the rights of children and staff to help end child abuse in preschools.

Using Education to Promote Civil Rights in Preschools
As an Early Childhood Education professional I take the rights of staff and children very seriously. I have witnessed children being mistreated verbally and physically. It is a very sad and real truth that this is happening. I see these problems as being completely against California’s vision of creating a trauma free environment where children from birth to five years of age are able to thrive and grow resilience.
There are children being abused in preschools and there are children witnessing the abuse. The teachers who are mishandling the children are being allowed back into the classrooms with the children they have abused. In addition to physical violence against the children, I have witnessed teachers allowing children to play with rusted kitchen pans and then insisting the rusted pans stay in the play area when I offered to throw the pans away.
If I ever complete the class I dropped and complete my goal as a Site Supervisor of a preschool, I would definitely have a space where mishandling children is not a choice. If I witness any staff member handling a child incorrectly I will immediately step in and advocate for the child's safety as well as reporting the incident to police.
When I complete my goal of being a counselor I will be sure to report any abuse I witness through the stories of the families I speak with. It is the saddest thing in the world to me that this is the environment California children are being subjected to. I will do everything I can to help create a better life for the early childhood of our youngest Californians.

The Fight Against Cancer
The people I know who survived cancer also died from cancer. I think that when we hear that someone is a cancer survivor we silently wonder if the cancer will come back and hope it never will. We rejoice in the excitement of winning the fight, not knowing how long the defeat will last. We stay as positive as possible fighting cancer with our positive thoughts and healthy diets. While we silently fear losing the people we love. We remember all of the good times we’ve had and we are thankful for our time together. Our relationships with others change. Everyone wants to know how you are doing and how your loved ones are with a new somber sincerity attached to their words. After rejoicing in surviving and then after the fight ends we are glad we gave the fight all that we could and we are happy for every extra moment we were together. Never stop the fight against cancer.

Preventing Suicide
When I was in seventh grade a boy in my class was out sick and never returned to school. I remember the teachers crying before we knew what happened. I remember being told that my peer had been out sick and while he was out sick he had been playing with a gun. The gun went off and he did not survive. They announced that this was an accident.
I have always wondered if that was the truth. I have always wondered what was going through his mind. I hope it was an accident and he was not a child that took his own life. I have always remembered him and I have always remembered the struggles of junior high. I remember thinking to myself if I ever felt sad enough to want to die then things couldn't possibly get worse and whatever seemed bad was bound to get better.
As an adult I have worked with children who I have encouraged to talk to the counselor about whatever it is that has them stressed out. We really never know what is going through their minds and we don't know if they are capable of taking their own lives. Be supportive and listen to the children in your lives the more love and understanding they have the better. Remind children of all of the people who love them. This is not a cure, just a way to be hopeful and supportive. I am extremely sorry for your loss.

With more education I will continue to fight for the rights of children and staff to help end child abuse in preschools.

Suicide Prevention

After rejoicing in surviving and then after the fight ends we are glad we gave the fight all that we could and we are happy for every extra moment we were together. Never stop the fight against cancer.

The people I know who survived cancer also died from cancer. I think that when we hear that someone is a cancer survivor we silently wonder if the cancer will come back and hope it never will. While we silently fear losing the people we love. We remember all of the good times we’ve had and we are thankful for our time together. Our relationships with others change.

Marshall and Dorothy Smith Music Scholarship
Music is a huge part of preschool. I would love to someday incorporate music into the every day routine schedule, when it is my choice. Music can help calm children and keep them focused throughout the day including transition times. Music creates clear steps for the children that are easy to remember and follow, in a fun and playful way. Unfortunately, the music enriched environment I am explaining is not always what is going on when we drop our children off at preschool.

In addition to physical violence against the children, I have witnessed teachers allowing children to play with rusted kitchen pans and then insisting the rusted pans stay in the play area when I offered to throw the pans away.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
When I was in seventh grade a boy in my class was out sick and never returned to school. I remember the teachers crying before we knew what happened. I remember being told that while my peer had been out sick and while he was out sick he had been playing with a gun.
This is not a cure just a way to be hopeful and supportive. I am extremely sorry for your loss.
Learner Math Lover Scholarship
When I was a child I remember a teacher telling me that math is the only universal language. When I heard that I took the meaning very seriously. I remember thinking "wow, aliens from other planets and Humans would be able to communicate through math". This was my earliest memory of my love for math although I am sure I loved math before that. As an adult I love helping children with math. I am fascinated by accounting and often wonder if I should have chosen accounting as my major.
As an Early Childhood Professional, I love introducing preschoolers to numbers. Preschoolers are amazed by counting and learn valuable math skills even though we are not practicing what you might think of as beginning math. 2+2=4 may seem almost as easy as it gets but in preschool it is more effective to show a child that putting four squares together make a bigger square or just simple that something is bigger than something else. Such as a baseball being smaller than a soccer ball. Learning how to teach foundational math skills to preschoolers is an important job. Although I maybe left wondering if I have chosen the correct path at times, I continue my journey in early childhood education feeling that the more I can do to prepare preschoolers for the future the better.

The Fight Against Cancer

This story is not to make you think anything negative about the daycare Brooks was in. SIDS deaths do happen in daycare and I don't know if that is what happened to your child.
