My brother is an addict. It hit our family hard because he was stealing and selling our stuff all the time, he was in & out of jail frequently. He would get high & violent breaking things. It was highly stressful. This started when he was 13. He's 40 now & still addicted. Can't stay clean more than a couple of months. Every time he gets out of jail. I was raised in Foster care my first 5 years of life. Was returned to a very unstable family from ages 6-16. Where CPS was called constantly. I lived with my grandmother on weekends, every weekend. I'm a sepsis survivor. I suffered from a miscarriage. Was sent home and told Id pass the baby naturally. Unfortunately, that was not the case. My body refused to release my deceased baby & it started decaying in my womb. Causing a severe sepsis infection. I didn't realize how sick I was at the time. I just knew I didn't feel well, was bleeding black blood, throwing up, exhausted. Went to ER and was put on IV antibiotics and had to have surgical procedure to clean my womb. I have sense recovered & am doing well. On top of living through sepsis myself. I have cared for hundreds of sepsis survivors over my medical career. A little bit more about me: I'm Jen. "Sorry to bother you again," the nurse said. "But your father is being combative and refusing care again. The only time he relaxes and accepts care is when you are by his side. Can you come in?" He had undergone surgery and had sepsis. He needed me. So I dropped what I was doing and drove to Mid Michigan Hospital. I helped shower him, shaved him, styled his hair. It was then that I realized I had a natural gift for caregiving. I have grown as a person and as a professional. I attended school and graduated as a state licensed CNA. Obtained first aid, CPR, AED training and certifications. I found it honest and rewarding work. It healed something deep in me being able to make someone else's life better. So many broken people in this world. That light up when they finally encounter someone in their life who takes the time to care for them. Even if it's for a short period of time. This became my philosophy for being a nurse. To be the light in people's lives during the darkest times. I will advocate for them. To me this is what having integrity is all about. Having direct and open communication with the patient, their families, and other medical staff. Advocating for what is right for the patient. Paying close attention to changes in the patient's condition or health. Following through on promises that I have made. Finishing tasks in a timely manner. Since the patients, staff and I have a mutual respect for one another. If accepted for the scholarship I will not only be grateful. But, this will open doors & opportunities for me that normally would not be accessible to me. I do face obstacles in my nursing career and license. Financial hardship, child care, lack of support. But these things will not deter me or stop me. My ambition is too strong. I have been doing a lot of leg work to research and apply for scholarships. To obtain funding. I have been working side by side with Michigan Works, along with applying for nursing scholarships and grants online. I don't have the best credit. I don't qualify for FAFSA. I'm a 41 year old stay at home mom. I enrolled my son in preschool full time and hired a sitter to come to my house on the days that he will not be in school. I am currently enrolled in the LPN program and Sterile Processing Tech program. Which allows me to graduate with an Associates degree Delta Community college.
