I aspire to make a positive impact on my patients as a registered nurse one day. I want to have a fulfilling career that helps people every day. One of the most important duties of being a nurse is making sure your patients feel comfortable. I think that I would be good at this because of my work at a memory care facility and I reassure our patients every day that they are safe and will be ok. I am a very patient and kind person so I will always be understanding and listen to all the needs of a patient. I started as a caregiver and I learned so much from the CNAs about compassionate patient care. All of our patients have dementia or Alzheimer's disease so I learned how crucial it is to be understanding and supportive no matter the situation. I am a med tech now and I’ve learned how to provide basic medical check-ups and administer all my patient's medication. My job has been the most rewarding experience of my life and I know now that I can succeed in any career in health care because I care so much for my patients. I’m interested in becoming a medical assistant first because it gives you a chance to experience many aspects of health care. I want to learn how to take a person’s blood pressure, but I also want to learn medical coding and bookkeeping. I am just starting out in the medical field so this is a great opportunity for me to see what I like doing best in healthcare and see what I am good at. As a college student, I will contribute my best effort. I want to be a good peer to everyone in the class by actively participating and answering questions. I want to have study groups and learn from my friends in the class as well. As a medical assistant and then nurse, I know I can contribute a lot to any facility because I have learned how to treat the needs of a patient with empathy and kindness. I will always strive to build good relationships with all my patients, so they feel comfortable asking questions and coming to me with their concerns. I will show my dedication in school so I can demonstrate to my future employers that I have excellent patient care skills, strong clinical skills, and a strong knowledge of preventative medicine. Being patient is important to me because I want to be the most compassionate, understanding nurse in the future. I work as a caregiver for dementia patients and it has taught me the most valuable lesson in compassionate care. Patience is key. It is the most heartbreaking thing in the world to see the psychological distress of dementia patients because they are experiencing their worst fears over and over again. I reassure them that they are safe and their families are safe. It doesn't matter to me if I have to answer the same question one thousand times because they can't remember, I will always take the time to make sure they feel heard. Many of my patients can't voice their concerns and show their suffering in other ways like being withdrawn, restless, or aggressive. In these cases, I help them find something to make them comfortable which could be playing a song from their childhood, making them their favorite snack, or even just sitting next to them and being a calm presence for them. It takes unlimited patience and caring to be a nurse and I feel like I have developed those skills by being a caregiver. I highly value patience as a health care worker and elsewhere in my life because as humans we just want to know that we are loved and understood. I want to know that I have done everything in my power to make each of my patients feel comfortable.
