As someone who suffers from a chronic illness and was a primary caregiver of my grandmother during her year-long journey with Stage-4 esophageal cancer, I have firsthand knowledge of the impact of person VS patient-focused healthcare. Every patient who enters a medical setting deserves to be treated with regard to their whole person, have a practitioner take time to understand the extent of information they (the patient) desire to know, and feel they are being listened to. I am passionate about a career in STEM but I will also use my education to work towards standardizing such practices in healthcare, advocating for patients to be heard, not just seen as a diagnosis.
