High school felt like a battlefield where my opponent was my own brain, and every night ended with my self-esteem bruised. By my senior year, I earned my associate’s degree in general studies before walking across the stage to collect my high school diploma. To most, this might sound like a victory. To me, it marked a turning point. Behind that achievement lay countless nights of internal turmoil. I fought to focus on assignments, battled feelings of inadequacy, and questioned if I would ever measure up. It wasn’t until my freshman year of college, sitting in a psychologist’s office, that I heard the words that changed my life: “You have ADHD.” For years, I believed my struggles were personal failings. But suddenly, I had a name for them, and that name wasn’t “lazy” or “incapable.” It was ADHD—a complex, frustrating, and, as I’ve learned, powerful part of who I am. As a Black woman in the South, opening up about mental health was no small feat. In my community, mental health is often seen as a private matter—something to pray through rather than address head-on. I wrestled with the stigma, worried that seeking help might make me appear weak. But I refused to let those fears define me. My diagnosis became the key to understanding myself and reclaiming my narrative. Treatment helped quiet the noise in my mind, but the real transformation came from setting goals and building structure in my life. ADHD thrives in chaos but wilts in order. I embraced routines, balanced sleep, exercise, and proper nutrition—not just as habits but as tools to stay grounded. Today, as a junior at Grambling State University majoring in cybersecurity, I reflect on how far I’ve come. My journey isn’t about overcoming ADHD—it’s about working with it. I began my academic journey by earning an Associate’s degree in Computer Science, which laid a strong foundation in technology and sparked my passion for securing critical systems. Now, as I pursue my bachelor’s degree, I am determined to broaden my expertise in cybersecurity and make a meaningful impact. My career goals are rooted in a desire to protect the systems and people who rely on them. Upon graduation, I plan to pursue a career as an ethical hacker, using my skills to identify vulnerabilities in networks and proactively combat cyber threats. This role aligns with my commitment to safeguarding vital sectors like the military, healthcare, and education—pillars of society where security is essential.
