Pursuing higher education has been a journey filled with challenges, but it has also been a testament to my resilience and determination. One of the most significant obstacles I faced was during my high school years when I participated in a dual enrollment program. The program allowed me to take college-level courses while still in high school, to earn an associate degree by the time I graduated. However, the administration told me it would be impossible to achieve this goal. Instead of letting their discouragement defeat me, I used their words as motivation to prove them wrong. With the unwavering support of my mother, I pushed myself to take double the classes my classmates were taking. Balancing a heavy course load with my high school responsibilities was not easy, but my determination paid off. I earned my Associate Degree in General Studies before walking across the stage at my high school graduation. This experience taught me the power of perseverance and the importance of having a strong support system. Another obstacle I had to overcome was self-doubt about pursuing a career in cybersecurity. Throughout high school and even into college, I heard countless people talk about how challenging the field was and how difficult it would be for someone like me to succeed. These comments made me question whether I belonged in cybersecurity or if I could even make a meaningful contribution. However, my mother once again played a crucial role in helping me overcome these doubts. She reminded me of my capabilities and encouraged me to pursue my passion regardless of what others said. Additionally, seeing other people of color, especially women, thriving in tech and STEM fields inspired me to believe in myself. Their success stories showed me that I, too, could break barriers and make an impact in cybersecurity. These obstacles have shaped me into the person I am today. They have taught me that challenges are not roadblocks but opportunities to grow and prove my strength. My mother’s support has been invaluable throughout this journey, and I am forever grateful for her encouragement and belief in me. Her unwavering faith in my abilities has given me the confidence to pursue my dreams, even when others doubted me. In conclusion, the obstacles I have faced in pursuit of higher education have been significant, but they have also been transformative. From proving the administration wrong by earning my associate degree to overcoming self-doubt about my place in cybersecurity, these experiences have strengthened my resolve and prepared me for the challenges ahead. With the support of my mother and the inspiration of others who have paved the way, I am confident in my ability to succeed and make a meaningful impact in my chosen field. Higher education is not just a goal for me—it is a stepping stone toward a future where I can inspire others and contribute to a safer, more inclusive world.

Greetings, name is Jelia Williams, and I am a junior at Grambling State University, majoring in Cybersecurity with a minor in Cloud Computing. Before graduating high school in May 2024, I achieved an important milestone by earning my associate’s degree in General Studies. This accomplishment reflects my dedication to academic excellence, but it is my pattern of kindness—listening and offering thoughtful advice—that truly defines who I am. Kindness has always been a guiding principle in my life, particularly the simple but powerful act of listening to others. In a world often filled with chaos, I strive to be a source of calm for those around me. One instance that stands out vividly is a time when a close friend of mine was overwhelmed by family issues, academic pressures, and uncertainty about the future. Late one evening, she called me, her voice trembling with anxiety. She felt trapped, unsure of how to navigate the challenges ahead. Instead of rushing to provide solutions, I simply listened. As she poured out her worries, I gave her the space to express her feelings without judgment. Once she felt heard, I offered her advice, drawing from multiple perspectives to help her see possibilities she hadn’t considered. I reminded her of her strengths and encouraged her to take things one step at a time. By the end of our conversation, her voice was steady, and she thanked me for helping her find clarity in the chaos. This moment reinforced my belief in the power of listening and empathy. It also showed me how a pattern of kindness—one as seemingly small as being there for someone—can have a profound impact. My friend later told me that our conversation helped her rebuild her confidence and take actionable steps toward resolving her challenges. Over time, this approach has become a defining aspect of how I interact with others. Whether it’s helping a classmate navigate academic stress, comforting a family member in a moment of grief, or offering guidance to a peer unsure of their next steps, I find fulfillment in being a source of support. I’ve learned that sometimes, people don’t need immediate solutions; they need someone to hear them, validate their feelings, and provide calm in their storm. One of the most rewarding aspects of this pattern of kindness is its ripple effect. When I listen and offer a balanced perspective, it often inspires others to pay that kindness forward. For instance, a peer I supported during a difficult time later told me they began offering the same kind of listening ear to others in their circle. Knowing that my actions can create a positive chain reaction motivates me to continue showing kindness wherever I can. This approach to life aligns seamlessly with my academic and career aspirations. Cybersecurity is a field that requires careful listening, patience, and problem-solving. In a way, the qualities I’ve developed through my acts of kindness—empathy, attention to detail, and a calm demeanor—are the same skills that will help me excel in protecting systems and people from digital threats. Just as I strive to be a calm presence for individuals, I aim to bring the same steadiness to my future career, ensuring safety and stability in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. Another way my pattern of kindness has positively impacted others is by fostering trust and deeper connections. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to feel isolated, even when surrounded by people. By making the time to truly listen and offer thoughtful advice, I’ve built meaningful relationships that have not only enriched my life but also strengthened my community. These connections remind me that kindness is not just about isolated acts—it’s a way of being that brings people together and fosters a sense of belonging. Financial challenges have made my educational journey complex, but they have also reinforced my commitment to helping others. Growing up, I witnessed how acts of kindness, no matter how small, could lift someone’s spirits and provide hope during difficult times. Online ADHD Diagnosis Mental Health Scholarship for Women
Some might think success is born from order—clear plans, perfect focus, and seamless execution. For me, success was born in chaos. I vividly remember the frustration of staring at textbooks, my mind racing in a dozen directions as a timer on my phone marked the minutes slipping away. High school felt like a battlefield where my opponent was my own brain, and every night ended with my self-esteem bruised. By my senior year, I earned my associate’s degree in general studies before walking across the stage to collect my high school diploma. To most, this might sound like a victory. To me, it marked a turning point. Behind that achievement lay countless nights of internal turmoil. I fought to focus on assignments, battled feelings of inadequacy, and questioned if I would ever measure up. It wasn’t until my freshman year of college, sitting in a psychologist’s office, that I heard the words that changed my life: “You have ADHD.” For years, I believed my struggles were personal failings. But suddenly, I had a name for them, and that name wasn’t “lazy” or “incapable.” It was ADHD—a complex, frustrating, and, as I’ve learned, powerful part of who I am. As a Black woman in the South, opening up about mental health was no small feat. In my community, mental health is often seen as a private matter—something to pray through rather than address head-on. I wrestled with the stigma, worried that seeking help might make me appear weak. But I refused to let those fears define me. My diagnosis became the key to understanding myself and reclaiming my narrative. Treatment helped quiet the noise in my mind, but the real transformation came from setting goals and building structure in my life. ADHD thrives in chaos but wilts in order. I embraced routines, balanced sleep, exercise, and proper nutrition—not just as habits but as tools to stay grounded. Today, as a junior at Grambling State University majoring in cybersecurity, I reflect on how far I’ve come. My journey isn’t about overcoming ADHD—it’s about working with it. ADHD doesn’t make me less capable; it makes me different. Where others see challenges, I see solutions. Where others see failure, I see opportunity. In cybersecurity, where creativity and unconventional thinking are assets, my ADHD isn’t a hindrance—it’s my superpower. But my journey isn’t just about academics or career goals. It’s about healing the little girl who thought she wasn’t enough, who tried so hard to “fit in” when her mind was wired to stand out. It’s about breaking cycles in my community, where mental health is too often ignored or misunderstood. ADHD isn’t a villain in my story; it’s a misunderstood companion. Yes, it feels like juggling knives on a tightrope. But it’s also the reason I can hyper-focus on a problem until I crack the code, the reason my mind leaps from one idea to the next, sparking creativity in unexpected ways. It’s taught me to adapt, innovate, and empathize with others who feel like they’re fighting invisible battles. Earning my associate’s degree before high school graduation was my first major victory, but it wasn’t my last. Every day I wake up and choose to embrace my differences, push forward, and turn struggles into fuel for growth, I win. My story isn’t about achieving success despite ADHD—it’s about achieving success because of it. With every step I take toward my cybersecurity degree, I carry the lessons ADHD has taught me: resilience, self-awareness, and the power to turn obstacles into opportunities. Therefore, I’m not defined by ADHD but by the clarity I’ve found through it.
