Our Earth and the effects we have on it have always made me wonder about the possibilities we hold. Learning about how our electricity production and cow emissions contribute to air pollution has fascinated me. Our environment is incredibly diverse, yet everything is interconnected. When I began my AP Environmental Science class, I expected to learn some enjoyable facts, but as the year progressed, I discovered a genuine passion for addressing our environmental impacts.
The thought that the trash we produce can outlast us haunts me whenever I see single-use products wrapped in plastic or when I notice items tossed into garbage without consideration for their environmental effects. Last year, I became aware of a significant issue with litter scattered around my school and the surrounding community. Many pieces of trash were recyclables that could have been reused. It troubled me to see that, despite our school having many students who consumed these recyclable items, most of them discarded them carelessly. It was disheartening to realize that something created for mere moments of enjoyment would end up in a landfill, outliving its consumer.
My studies will focus on combating climate change as I pursue a career in Environmental Engineering. I aim to tackle issues related to waste management, air and water pollution control, and site remediation. While I understand that achieving a completely sustainable society is nearly impossible, developing innovative solutions is critical for the future of our planet. Through my studies, I hope to create and implement new sustainable practices to mitigate human impacts and reduce their effects. My education will not only empower me with knowledge about climate change but will also provide me with a platform to advocate for societal changes, including the consequences of capitalism. Addressing climate change and environmentalism requires more than just practices; advocacy is essential. Educating individuals about the significance of their carbon footprints and how to minimize them is the true key to combating climate change.
Recognizing the escalating issues of pollution and waste, I felt compelled to make a difference within my school and community through my involvement in the Environmental Club. I provided advice to my friends, family, and community members about their carbon footprints and how to lessen them. At the beginning of the year, our club encouraged teachers to place recycling bins in their classrooms, expanding our program by over twenty new rooms. This simple action enabled more students to recycle daily. We also organized bi-weekly collection days, gathering all classroom bins and preparing them for recycling. Our advocacy for recycling emphasized that it is merely a tool for negotiation; we must address the problem at its source. I encouraged my club and family to reduce single-use items to tackle the issue at its roots. Sustainability begins with mindfulness and consistent habits. While recycling is important, reducing waste through the use of reusable products, conserving energy and water, and supporting eco-friendly options is even more beneficial. Together, we can all work to shrink our carbon footprints. Every small effort counts, and when multiplied across a community, these actions can create a substantial, lasting impact on the planet.
