One of the only teachers I had that had actually shown the passion to teach was Mr. Davies, my 1st-grade teacher. He was an immigrant from Southern Africa and had moved to America to pursue his dreams of becoming a teacher and spreading his belief of kindness along with the subjects in school. He chose to include teaching the importance of kindness and compassion to show love to both your close ones and your “bad guys.” Although we were only 1st graders, I still remember to this day what he told us to keep in mind when we felt angry or frustrated at people.
Mr. Davies, although English was not his first language, spoke with such clarity and wisdom. At the beginning of my high school career, I went back to the elementary school to speak to Mr. Davies again. When I saw him again, he recognized me and immediately he asked how I was doing. I spoke to him and seeked advice, but not only did he give me advice, he opened my mind with his words. He explained to me how not only would my life get much more difficult, but that if I worked my hardest and showed others the kindness that they deserved I would be successful.
The most impactful words from Mr. Davies were some that help me show kindness to others. “Being nice to people can help them in ways that are unimaginable.” Obviously, he explained it in a simpler way so that we could understand. The last time I got to see him and have a conversation, he told me the very same thing. He proceeded to say, “To show kindness and generosity to the human soul can redesign the human mind.” This time I understood. His kindness changed me in a way that was imaginable. We were just kids but I understood him.
In 2019, I moved states and now I no longer have in-person conversations with Mr. Davies. The first couple years in a new state hit me hard. My mental and physical health declined. I didn’t make friends because I missed my old ones. My junior year is when I decided to make new friends. When I made friends, I saw how meaningful they were to me and how much kindness they deserved. I showed them kindness and I received happiness from seeing their smiles.
The idea of kindness that Mr. Davies taught me, helped me see why I wanted to pursue my career as a teacher. Kindness seems like something anyone can do any day, but it is now rarely shown in today's social interactions. I want to become a teacher to integrate kindness into my everyday teachings. Mr. Davies set an example and when he showed me and taught me his ideas, it astounded me. I want to continue to spread that goodwill to others so kindness can be shown more often in society because we all need it.
