The taunts and whispers from classmates left me feeling exposed and vulnerable. I was subjected to intrusive comments like "Don't turn into Michael Jackson!" and "Can your phone fit through your gap?" Every glance and joke exacerbated my desperate search for solutions to problems I believed defined me. At home, I harbored another secret—nocturnal enuresis. The thought of my peers discovering this condition filled me with dread. I never shared this part of my life with anyone; the fear that my vulnerability would be exposed haunted me daily. My silence was a shield, but also isolated me further from those who could have offered understanding or support. Finally, I persuaded my parents to take me to Ulta Beauty, driven by the hope that makeup could morph me into someone who would finally fit in. Sitting in the makeup chair, I pointed around my white spots and instructed the makeup artist, "I want to cover all of this." When the Ulta Beauty employee handed me the mirror, I saw a reflection that conformed to conventional standards of normalcy. I did it. Yet, as I gazed at my altered image, the satisfaction was fleeting. The mirror revealed a façade—a thin veneer that did nothing to address the deeper issues of self-acceptance and identity. The makeup masked my vitiligo, but it did not change the feelings of inadequacy or the disconnection between who I was and who I was trying to be. Growing up with Vitiligo, my journey has been a rollercoaster of self-discovery and resilience. It all started in first grade, innocent and unaware, as those distinctive patches of pigment loss began to make their mark on my skin. Little did I know that this would be the spark for my biggest challenge: self-confidence. As the Vitiligo spread, so did the unkindness of others. Bullies found a new target, and stares became a constant companion in my daily life. I can still vividly remember the tears streaming down my face when I told my parents about the way people looked at me, told me that I bleached my skin, and the way they treated me differently by not playing or sitting with me. My confidence was at an all-time low. I became a master at avoiding pictures, not making new friends, and avoiding conversations about my Vitiligo. Then came the turning point, a moment that would alter my perspective forever. I decided to cover my Vitiligo with makeup for my dad's surprise birthday party. My skin was completely gone from the large white patches. I was happy and thought I looked beautiful. However, I realized that it was the bullies' version of beautiful. I finally looked like a "full black girl." At the end of the night, I had to wash off what made me accepted and beautiful in the eyes of others. To this day, I have never covered my Vitiligo again. This experience ignited some revolution within me. Why should I hide a part of myself that makes me unique? Why fit into the expectations of others when my authenticity is my strength? The shift in my mindset was gradual but profound. It took seven years of introspection, resilience, and self-love to embrace my uniqueness genuinely. Ultimately, I adopted a slogan: "Why hide it when I can show it off?" Through this journey, I have learned that true confidence does not stem from conformity but from embracing one's authentic self. The judgments of others no longer define me; instead, I have grown into a person who values individuality, resilience, and self-love. For some time, I was not sure where I belonged in the workforce world. However, I knew that I wanted to work in healthcare! With that idea in mind, I am confident my commitment and determination, which enabled me to succeed in high school, will help me succeed in college and become the first member of my family to graduate from college and potentially go on to medical school. After going to a medicine program at Emory University over the summer in June of 2023 and volunteering at my local hospital for almost a year, I now know that I want to pursue a career in emergency medicine in the future. I am a Florida native and have been through Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Ian, so with my future experience in the emergency medicine field, I want to use my knowledge and capabilities to work with rescue workers and their teams during seasonal natural disasters like hurricanes. Earlier, I mentioned possibly going to medical school because of the journey of becoming a doctor. The traditional path of becoming a doctor is completing four years of undergraduate education, followed by attending a four-year medical school right after graduating with your Bachelor's degree. Then, I must graduate medical school, attend a residency program, and complete any training or fellowships based on my specialty. In total, this takes me up to a total of 10 to 14 tedious years of education. However, I do not have a problem with the duration because I know I can overcome anything I put my mind and heart to. I, unfortunately, do not have the funds to go through medical school, so I am currently in a position where I must take an alternative route. As of right now, I can only get my undergraduate education to go through nursing school. Once I gain enough experience and save a fixed amount of funds in nursing, I will apply to medical schools to go from registered nurse to medical doctor. The Bright Lights Scholarship money will enable me to carry out my objectives for the future much more quickly than I now anticipate! For instance, by keeping costs low, the Bright Lights Scholarship will assist me in covering the expenses of my undergraduate education at a prestigious university in the state of Florida. Despite the odds, my brother shocked everyone and did both of the things they said he would not. However, he visited the NICU many times. When I was younger, I felt like he lived there instead of living in our home. Flash forward to 2020, and my little brother eventually needed to undergo cardiac surgery. 2020 was a rocky year for everyone. Almost everything was shut down, for instance, schools and restaurants. Due to not going to school, my siblings and I went on short walks around our neighborhood. On those walks, my brother would tell me how terrified he was and how he did not want to die. Hearing him say those things made me scared as well. What broke my heart the most is that he never once spoke about how he felt about his upcoming surgery at home around our parents, but only when it was the two of us alone. Due to those two significant moments in my life, I have finally concluded to myself and my family that I want to pursue a career in Neurology or Cardiology, or both if possible. With either one of those specialties, I plan to reside in Pediatrics. With inspiration from my mother, I plan to make a positive impact through my career by providing endless love and care to any child, even though they are not biologically mine, just like how my mother endlessly does for me. Finally, with inspiration from my courageous little brother, I will make a positive impact through my career by being trustworthy and providing support to any child and their family whenever they need it. Trust and support are two of the many major components of working in a hospital setting, and I believe this is what my family, healthcare workers, and I provided my brother. Even though patients are battling their health issues, being trustworthy and supportive can forever remind anyone that there is always hope.

Playing soccer is, without a doubt, my most vital skill. Soccer is a challenging sport to master, and it is one of many that requires you to use your feet. We don't use our feet as much during the day as I do during a soccer game. Going to practice is one of the ways I choose to improve. Soccer practice allows me to develop my soccer skills. To score in a soccer game, you must know how to shoot the ball because it does not guide itself. I can enhance my shoots and make them more accurate with my training.

Everyone who wants to live a healthy lifestyle needs motivation. We are often busy doing numerous things on a daily basis, and occasionally multiple duties are thrown at you all at once. Whenever I am going through that type of pressure from school, my parents motivate me. My parents were both born and raised in Haiti and never had any opportunities, and they have always told me that they had to fight and work their way up to open their own opportunities. On the other hand, I was born in America, and as I get older, many opportunities and options can be easily be placed in front of me. All I need to do is stay committed to that opportunity, and I can succeed. My parents inspire me to do what I want, just like they did, despite their extremely low possibilities of getting there.

I have many goals for the future. I want to be successful and live a healthy lifestyle on my own. My current goal is to push forward in my high school career. I always strive to do my best on tests, quizzes, and extracurricular activities. I will always continue to take and build up my opportunities with my confidence to succeed. My most significant goal is to graduate high school with a superior GPA. After graduating high school, I want to continue my education and major in Pediatric Nursing. Once I become Pediatric Nurse, I will make it my mission to be there for any child's medical needs. I am incredibly passionate about helping individuals, children, and families with health problems. I will also be there to support that patient and their family. Not just as a nurse but as a friend to make a positive change in their lives.

I am confident to say that my best skill is playing soccer. The game of soccer is highly complex. It is one of the many sports that require using your feet. We do not often use our feet during the day like we use our feet during a soccer game. One way I choose to improve is by going to practice. Soccer practice helps me improve my soccer skills to be better. To score in a soccer game, you need to know how to shoot the ball because the ball will not tell itself where to go. With my training, I can improve my shots to be better and more accurate.

There are many ways can practice self-care. I enjoy playing soccer with my family and team. While I am practicing with my family and team, my mental and physical health improves. My mental health improves because I am interactive with people that support me. With the support I receive, I feel so much better. Journaling is an intelligent way of self-care. There are many ways you could use a journal, such as using it to reflect on your day, relieve stress, or stay more organized. Sometimes even being more organized can help you. I use a journal to reflect on my day. As I write on things that made my day or things I wish went differently, I ask myself questions for a self-reflection. I want to help myself grow and improve to become a healthier person as I continue journaling.
