I used my phone, Google, YouTube, short videos, and daily practice to learn enough Spanish to communicate and help when we needed to speak with people. That changed the way I looked at technology. It was not only something I used for entertainment. It became something I could use to learn, find resources, solve problems, and help myself when I wasn't prepared. That way of figuring things out stayed with me when I later entered an American classroom and had to learn inside another system I did not fully understand. Today, I see the same kind of problem when someone gets stuck with technology. If a classmate does not know how to use a school platform, or someone is having trouble with an online form, a phone, a slow device, or a connection problem, I try to help with what I know. I also know when a problem is too advanced for me and someone needs more help. Those situations showed me that technology is useful when it helps a person understand something or do something they were struggling to do before. I am studying Computer Science at Temple University because I want to go from using technology and helping with small technology problems to learning how to build better tools. I still worried about family in Haiti. I still remembered what instability felt like. I also had to adjust to a new country, a new school, and a new language while trying not to fall behind. I was safer, and I was grateful for that, but being safer did not erase everything I had already lived through. Family also shaped the way I understand emotional pain. I want to study Computer Science at Temple University, with interests in software engineering and AI/ML. But I do not want to build technology just because it sounds impressive. I want to build tools that make support easier to reach. Many people struggle not only because help does not exist, but because they do not know where to find it, how to ask for it, or who they can trust. A student under pressure may need mentorship. A family may need clear information. A young person may need one safe place to start. I know technology cannot replace real human care. An app cannot replace a mentor, a counselor, a family member, or a community that listens. But technology can make the path to help clearer. Losing my cousin Edison Edma was one of the most painful experiences of my life. Even though he was my cousin, he was much more than that to me. We lived together for a long time, and he was someone I looked up to like an older brother. Growing up, he was always there for me, giving me advice, supporting me, and helping guide me through life. As a kid, I needed someone like that, and he filled that role in a way I will never forget. When he passed away, it affected me deeply. Losing someone I was so close to caused a lot of stress and emotional pain. It felt like a part of my life was suddenly gone. I had to learn how to deal with that loss while continuing to move forward. It was not easy, and it changed how I saw life and myself. I learned early on that life can change quickly, and that loss can leave a lasting impact. At the same time, Edison’s death taught me many important lessons. It pushed me to learn how to make decisions on my own and become more independent. I think about the advice he used to give me and still apply it in my life today. I felt really sad leaving my family, but I trusted God to protect them. Before going anywhere, I would pray and ask God to watch over us. I didn’t know what would happen next, but I trusted Him completely. Getting to the airport and finally getting on the plane felt like nothing but God’s protection. I truly believe it was all Him, and I am very thankful for that. When I first arrived in the United States, my faith continued to guide me. I felt very welcomed at my new church, First Haitian Church of York. This church became like a second home to me. I attend church every Sunday, both in the morning and the evening, and I try to participate in all church activities. I help the church prepare for events and other activities. Just a couple days ago, they were celebrating Christmas, and I helped clean and get things ready so everyone would feel welcomed. Seeing everything go well made me feel proud and thankful, and it reminded me that helping others through faith is rewarding. Worship songs, prayers, and reading help me stay strong every day. The words in the songs and the prayers remind me of the truth and help me keep going when life feels hard. Even though I don’t read my Bible every single day, I do read it sometimes, and I always try to put God first in whatever I do. My faith is not perfect, but it is real, and I want to grow closer to God day after day. In the future, I want to help people and spread positivity wherever I go.
