Dr. Christine Lawther First in the Family Scholarship
Being the first in my family to pursue a college degree is not just a personal journey but a powerful opportunity to transform lives. Coming from a lower-income household where financial constraints and limited access to resources have shaped my experiences, this journey represents an avenue to break cycles of educational disadvantage and create a brighter future for my family. My grandfather, a Vietnam veteran and dedicated entrepreneur, instilled in me the value of perseverance in the face of adversity. His struggles with combat-related PTSD and unsuccessful ventures have fueled my determination to create a better life, not just for myself, but for generations to come. Growing up, education was always emphasized as a means to a better future, but navigating the path to higher education without a familial guide has been challenging. I had to learn how to apply for college, seek financial aid, and balance responsibilities independently. Despite these hurdles, I have remained focused on my academic goals, understanding that my success will open doors for both myself and future generations in my family. I am pursuing a history major with a minor in accounting through Oregon State University’s online campus. History has always ignited my passion, allowing me to uncover and preserve the stories that define our world. It teaches us to reflect on the past while providing insight into cultural and societal developments. Accounting, on the other hand, equips me with practical skills and opens doors to a high-demand field, offering financial stability. This dual focus reflects my ambition to unite my intellectual pursuits with practical applications that empower me to contribute meaningfully to society. My long-term goals intertwine personal growth with a commitment to serving others. I aim to pursue a Master’s in Library and Information Science, enabling me to preserve historical literature and artifacts, ensuring that knowledge remains accessible for future generations. I am dedicated to becoming an educator, teaching history at the high school or community college level to inspire students to connect with the past and its relevance to their lives. Additionally, I envision helping future students from underprivileged backgrounds achieve their educational and financial dreams by guiding them through academic and financial planning processes. My ultimate goal is contributing to academic communities while creating pathways for others to thrive. The challenges I’ve faced—from navigating chronic health issues and disabilities to managing freelance work while caring for family members—have only deepened my resolve to succeed. These experiences have taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of empathy. As a first-generation college student, I aim to show my family that our circumstances do not define our potential. I want to demonstrate to my younger relatives that education can be a transformative force, capable of opening doors once thought closed. This scholarship would ease some of my financial burdens, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and volunteer work. It would stand as a testament to resilience and the importance of educational equity. Together, we can create a ripple effect that enriches not only my family but also the broader community.
    Pushing Our Scholars Forward
Pursuing higher education has been a lifelong aspiration of mine, shaped by personal experiences and a deep desire to make a meaningful contribution to society. I am currently enrolled in a history major with a minor in accounting at Oregon State University’s online campus. This academic path beautifully reflects my dual passions: a love for preserving and understanding history and a pragmatic pursuit of a career in a high-demand field like accounting. My choice to study history is deeply personal. Growing up in a low-income household, I found solace in the stories of the past, gaining strength from lessons of resilience, creativity, and triumph in the face of adversity. My volunteer work as a civilian archivist at the U.S. National Archives, where I transcribed historical documents for future generations, ignited this passion further. This experience deepened my commitment to preserving cultural heritage and inspired me to pursue a Master’s in Library and Information Science. My ultimate ambition is to work as a librarian or archivist, safeguarding historical artifacts and literature to ensure their accessibility for future scholars and communities. Simultaneously, I chose to minor in accounting to secure a stable career in a field that is both intellectually stimulating and practical. By gaining expertise in accounting, I aim to contribute to nonprofit organizations, historical institutions, and libraries, ensuring their financial sustainability. Additionally, I aspire to mentor and support students from diverse backgrounds, helping them navigate the financial challenges of higher education. Balancing work and education has been both necessary and challenging. My first job at Walmart taught me the values of adaptability and hard work, unveiling the financial struggles many working-class individuals face. After leaving that job due to health issues and caregiving responsibilities, I embraced freelance work. Over the years, I’ve gained experience in data entry, transcription, copywriting, and content creation. While freelancing provides flexibility, it also emphasizes the stress of inconsistent income. Maintaining this balance requires careful time management and perseverance, strengthening my resilience and deepening my appreciation for education as a transformative path to stability and growth. As a low-income student navigating chronic health challenges and limited local opportunities, higher education serves as a gateway to a brighter future for myself and my community. I am committed to using my education to empower others—whether through preserving historical knowledge, mentoring students, or supporting organizations that align with my values. This scholarship would significantly alleviate the financial strain of tuition, textbooks, and living expenses, enabling me to focus intently on achieving my academic and career goals. In conclusion, my journey through higher education is fueled by a desire to bridge the past and present, merging my love for history with practical skills in accounting to contribute positively to society. My experiences juggling work and study have instilled in me resilience and adaptability—qualities that will guide me as I strive to make education, knowledge, and cultural preservation accessible to future generations.
    Dick Loges Veteran Entrepreneur Scholarship
My educational and career goals have been profoundly shaped by the resilience, ambition, and sacrifices of my grandfather, a Vietnam War veteran and entrepreneur. Growing up in a lower-income household, I witnessed how my grandfather’s military service and entrepreneurial spirit transformed his life and mine. His experiences provided a powerful roadmap for overcoming challenges and pursuing an education aligned with my passions and practical aspirations. After returning from Vietnam, my grandfather worked as a welder at Alcoa while striving to diversify his income through investments in stocks, starting businesses, and owning property. Despite his best efforts, these ventures did not turn out as he had hoped. The physical demands of welding, the toll of his military experiences, and the challenges of business left him struggling. His exposure to Agent Orange and the trauma of combat led to long-term health issues and PTSD, which became increasingly difficult for him to manage. Yet, I watched him persevere, instilling in me the values of resilience, hard work, and determination. His entrepreneurial journey taught me that success is not always linear; it’s about staying adaptable, learning from failures, and never giving up. These lessons have significantly influenced my educational path. While I am passionate about history and literature, I recognize the importance of practical skills. Inspired by my grandfather’s efforts to balance his passions with financial stability, I majored in history with a minor in accounting at Oregon State University. This combination allows me to fulfill my interest in history while gaining valuable expertise in a high-demand field. My grandfather’s military service has also shaped my academic choices. His experiences in Vietnam, particularly his exposure to Agent Orange and the psychological effects of combat, instilled in me a profound respect for veterans and their sacrifices. This inspiration led me to volunteer as a civilian archivist at the U.S. National Archives, where I work to preserve historical documents, including those related to veterans’ experiences. Through this work, I have come to understand the immense importance of preserving history for future generations and honoring those who served, particularly in times of hardship. The lessons I learned from my grandfather’s resilience in adversity and his pursuit of financial stability have been guiding lights on my path. I have realized that true success is not just about overcoming setbacks but transforming those experiences into fuel for progress. His example inspires me as I pursue my education and strive to utilize my knowledge and skills to create a meaningful impact in my community and beyond.
Francis E. Moore Prime Time Ministries Scholarship
My educational journey has been shaped by my passion for history and the obstacles I’ve encountered along the way. I am currently pursuing a major in history with a minor in accounting at Oregon State University. I plan to further my education with a Master’s in Library and Information Science (MLIS) and Education, and I am also considering a degree in wildlife studies. My goal is to combine my love for history with helping others navigate financial challenges, enabling them to achieve their educational aspirations. The path to higher education has been difficult. Coming from a lower-income background, I’ve faced financial barriers that have made it challenging to access resources and opportunities. Additionally, my chronic health issues have hindered my ability to maintain consistent progress in my studies, and a lack of reliable transportation has limited my ability to secure local jobs or internships that would provide valuable experience. To make ends meet, I turned to freelance work, including data entry, transcription, and copywriting. While these jobs allowed me to support myself, the instability of freelance work has prevented me from establishing a reliable career foundation. Despite these challenges, I remain committed to my educational goals, knowing that overcoming these obstacles will not only benefit me but also others who face similar struggles. My experience as a caregiver for a family member who underwent major surgery has further shaped my desire to help others. This experience deepened my understanding of the importance of support systems and resources in education, particularly for those facing health or financial challenges. It motivated me to create opportunities for others who are under-resourced, including those affected by incarceration. Incarceration, whether personal or familial, creates significant barriers to education and employment. I understand that these challenges can be long-lasting and often prevent individuals from pursuing their educational goals. My own struggles have made me passionate about creating opportunities for those disproportionately affected by systemic barriers, such as incarceration, poverty, or lack of resources. I believe that education is key to breaking these cycles, and I want to help others overcome these obstacles as I have. Achieving my educational goals will allow me to build a meaningful career and assist others who are navigating similar barriers. With my background in history and accounting, I hope to mentor individuals, provide financial guidance, and work in archives to preserve historical knowledge. Through these efforts, I aim to create spaces where people can access the resources and support they need to succeed. In conclusion, the obstacles I’ve faced have only strengthened my determination to pursue my educational goals and help others along the way. Overcoming these challenges will not only benefit my own career but also enable me to support others striving to overcome similar barriers. I am committed to using my education to create opportunities for those who need it most.

I come from a lower-income household and have faced numerous challenges on my journey, including chronic health issues, disabilities, and a lack of reliable transportation. Despite these obstacles, I have remained dedicated to my education and long-term goals. I am passionate about history and its preservation, which has led me to volunteer as a civilian archivist at the U.S. National Archives, where I transcribe historical documents for future generations. This role has reinforced my desire to combine my academic interests in history and accounting while contributing to the preservation of knowledge. By creating and sharing this content, I aim to provide others with knowledge and insight, helping to foster a stronger, more informed community. Despite facing personal challenges, I have always sought to give back by sharing knowledge and offering support where possible. One of my greatest challenges occurred when I took a year off to care for a family member facing serious health issues. During this time, I struggled with my own health and was unable to secure stable employment, which left me feeling defeated and uncertain about my future. However, this experience taught me resilience and adaptability. I learned that setbacks should not be viewed as the end but rather as opportunities to reassess and grow. Ultimately, this period of difficulty pushed me to explore alternative career paths, such as freelancing, which has helped me regain my financial stability while continuing my education. My greatest strengths are my perseverance, adaptability, and passion for learning. I am highly organized and detail-oriented, which allows me to balance multiple responsibilities, including academics, volunteer work, and freelance jobs. Jimmy Cardenas Community Leader Scholarship
As a first-generation college student with autism, my journey to ACC marked a significant milestone defined by challenges overcome through resilience and leadership. Transitioning from high school to college presented formidable obstacles, particularly navigating the demands of rigorous coursework and the complexities of social interactions. Instead of succumbing to doubts, I approached these challenges with determination and proactive planning. One of the first strategies I implemented was creating a detailed weekly schedule. This allowed me to effectively manage my time, prioritize assignments, and maintain the structure necessary for my academic success. Recognizing the importance of seeking support early on, I proactively engaged with ACC's disability services office. Through collaborative efforts, we identified and implemented accommodations tailored to my needs, such as extended exam times and access to quiet study areas. These accommodations not only leveled the playing field but also empowered me to excel academically. Beyond academic pursuits, I embraced opportunities to demonstrate leadership within the college community. I actively participated in clubs and campus initiatives aligned with my interests, fostering meaningful connections and contributing to a more inclusive environment. As someone passionate about advocating for greater understanding of autism and supporting fellow students, I utilized my experiences to initiate conversations and promote awareness among peers and faculty. My leadership extended beyond advocacy into practical action. I volunteered for roles that required teamwork and decision-making, honing my ability to collaborate effectively while advocating for the needs of diverse groups. Whether organizing events or participating in student government, I strived to represent the voice of students with disabilities and ensure their perspectives were heard and respected. Moreover, I sought mentorship from academic advisors and faculty members who guided me in selecting courses that aligned with my strengths and career aspirations. By actively seeking advice and leveraging resources, I cultivated a supportive network that bolstered my academic journey and personal growth. Reflecting on my experiences at ACC, I am proud of the progress I've made and the impact I've had within the college community. Through resilience, proactive planning, and a commitment to leadership, I have not only overcome personal challenges but also inspired others to persevere in the face of adversity. Looking ahead, I am eager to continue advocating for inclusivity and empowerment, both on campus and in broader contexts. My journey as a first-generation college student with autism has equipped me with the skills and determination to make a meaningful difference, and I am dedicated to leveraging these experiences to create positive change in the world around me.
