When I was growing up, reading felt like the most natural thing for me to do. It allowed me to block out almost everything else and transported me to the various fictional worlds I read about. This experience inspired me to share it with other children of color who might not have a favorite character they can relate to because African Americans aren't represented enough in fictional stories. My main goal for college is to gain a better understanding of different writing styles that will be easy for kids to understand in my children's books. English and Creative Writing will be my primary major for this goal.

Facing adversity is a topic that deserves much more attention, especially when it comes to the experiences of Black children during their crucial years of development. Unfortunately, many young people have to navigate the harsh reality of being treated unfairly due to the color of their skin—something they cannot change. This external conflict often leads to feelings of shame and isolation for such individuals, as they are caught between a desire to fit in and the pressure to adhere to a specific racial identity.
Growing up in a small town with limited representation was particularly challenging. Watching as my peers felt valued and acknowledged, often led me to feel invisible. With each day at school, I sensed that I was under scrutiny as if my performance in various activities determined my worth. It was disheartening to realize that teachers sometimes excluded me from basic tests and assignments, seemingly dismissing my potential rather than encouraging it.
Constantly, I struggled to understand why innocent actions, like two children joyfully pretending to be magical beings on the playground, were met with disapproval. It took years for me to grasp why those simple moments of play were scrutinized until finally, I was able to conclude that not all minds are as open as we´d like to believe.
However, instead of letting moments like these halt my attempt to rise to excellence, I decided to continue my journey of life by learning the importance of self-acceptance and embracing my racial identity. Through daily interactions, I realized that my identity was not something to be ashamed of but rather a source of family pride and strength. This discovery helped me navigate the harsh realities of racism and discrimination, allowing me to find a sense of belonging even in environments where I felt excluded.
Forging connections and cultivating relationships with individuals who have encountered similar obstacles has proven to be one of the most valuable benefits of embracing my true self. By liberating myself from the constraints of biases and prejudices—both those imposed by society and those I held internally. I have come to discover a deeper understanding of who I am and what I am capable of achieving.
This journey of self-acceptance has taught me that the perceptions of others do not define my qualities, strengths, or potential. Instead, I have learned to look inward, embracing my identity without allowing societal norms and pressures to dictate my sense of worth.
For those who are navigating the complexities of their challenges, my advice is to remain steadfast in your authenticity. Prioritize staying true to your values and beliefs, regardless of external expectations. Developing an unrelenting sense of self-awareness plays a crucial role in nurturing internal resilience and perseverance, as it empowers individuals to recognize their strengths and vulnerabilities. By understanding oneself better, one can face obstacles with confidence and determination, ultimately leading to personal growth and fulfillment.
Billie Eilish Fan Scholarship
I'll never forget how extremely isolated I felt when the lockdown first hit. It was like the usually bright and chaotic world had suddenly gone quiet, and everyone was just holding their breath, spreading their own beliefs about the underlying cause of its origins, and limiting public discussion about it during school hours like it was a sacred omen to not be spoken aloud. At first, I wasn’t impressed by Billie’s music or her reputation for creating depressing music for angsty teens. However, in a moment of boredom, I decided to give her music a try since I had nothing else of interest to turn to other than more online homework.
During those long, suffocating days of quarantine, Billie's music slowly became like my second lifeline, behind Disney+'s new streaming services. Her raw, honest lyrics and haunting melodies gave voice to all the emotions I was struggling to express. Three of her songs, in particular, hit me right in the feels and helped me feel less alone in my struggles.
"Lovely," Billie's collab with Khalid, speaks to the part of me that often felt lost in the early stages of depression. When she sings, "Isn't it lovely, all alone? Heart made of glass, my mind of stone," There's a bittersweet beauty to the song that reminds me even our darkest moments can be strangely beautiful. The soaring vocals and strings give me a glimmer of hope that maybe I'm not as alone as I feel.
"When the Party's Over" is another one that gets me every time. It's all about putting on a brave face for others while you're ready to fall apart inside. The line "Don't you know I'm no good for you?" hits home, echoing my fears of being a burden to the people I care about without realizing it. Billie's quiet intensity building to that gut-wrenching end is exactly how it feels when all those repressed emotions finally bubble over during a discussion.
And then there's "What Was I Made For?" from the Barbie soundtrack. This one's become my latest addition to my tear-jerker playlist. The soft melody masks lyrics that cut deep, especially when she sings, "I don't know how to feel?". It perfectly captures those moments when I question my purpose and wonder if I'm making any difference at all. As a growing woman, it’s constantly thrown in my face that having control over my own body and feminist beliefs is widely looked down upon by conservative individuals who don't consider other people's ideals for life. I feel that Billie’s song fits perfectly for the theme of the movie by representing all the thoughts that can swarm a young girl's mind when faced with all the prejudiced excuses for why things are this way today.
These songs have been more than just music for me, they've been a form of therapy. They've helped me process all the complicated thoughts in my head and reminded me that I'm not the only one struggling. Billie's willingness to be so vulnerable in her music has made it okay for people my age to talk about their mental health. Her songs have given me the courage to open up about my challenges and express my emotions regardless of feeling like I'll be judged. Billie’s even been brave enough to share her own life experiences and hardships about not believing she’s ever got to reach a certain age in her life.
Nonetheless, Billie Eilish's music taught me that sometimes it's okay to not be okay. And that's a pretty powerful thing to learn during a global pandemic.
“Stranger Things” Fanatic Scholarship
If I could form a squad with any three characters from Stranger Things to face a new supernatural threat, I would choose Dustin, Steve, and Eleven. Each of them brings unique strengths that would be crucial in overcoming whatever challenges we might encounter.
First, Dustin Henderson is the brains of the group. His intelligence and resourcefulness have always set him apart. He has a knack for problem-solving and is incredibly knowledgeable about the supernatural elements we face, thanks to his experiences with the Upside Down universe being heavily inspired by the D&D lore. Dustin's quick thinking and creativity would be invaluable in devising strategies and finding solutions to unexpected problems along our journey in trying to stay alive.
Next, I would choose Steve Harrington. Initially, I wouldn’t have chosen him right off the bat, but Steve has evolved into such a trustworthy ally to take over the series. He possesses a combination of bravery and combat skills that are essential for any dangerous situation, especially when it comes to the 'demo-dogs'. His experience in fighting monsters, along with his protective nature, makes him an ideal teammate in this situation. Plus, if there was a character that would take the leap to sacrifice themselves if it meant the survival of the team, it would definitely be Harrington.
Finally, Eleven is an obvious choice. With her telekinetic powers and strong connection to the Upside Down, she is our most powerful asset. Eleven has faced unimaginable horrors and emerged victorious, demonstrating her resilience and strength. Her abilities would allow us to confront threats head-on, whilst having the common sense not to overuse or fully depend on her powers due to the fact that it does take up a lot of her energy.
Together, this trio would create a balanced team, combining intelligence, strength, and supernatural abilities. Facing a new supernatural threat would be daunting, but with Dustin’s smarts, Steve’s overwhelming courage, and Eleven’s powers, I believe we could tackle anything that comes our way.
Anime Enthusiast Scholarship
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, I didn't understand the popularity of anime. Despite my friends' enthusiastic recommendations of various shows, none managed to grab my interest. However, during the long hours of quarantine lockdown, I finally gave in to a persistent show in my recommendations list: Mob Psycho 100.
After watching the series, I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the main character, Mob. Unlike typical shonen protagonists, Mob's struggle wasn’t mainly against external villains but rather his internal emotional turmoil and quest for self-discovery. This realization completely shifted my perspective on anime, as it revealed its ability to explore profound psychological themes and character development.
Mob's journey from a timid, emotionally repressed boy to someone who learns to embrace his emotions and powers resonated deeply with me as an introvert. What struck me the most was how the series focused on personal growth rather than glorifying power-ups and epic battles, mirroring our modern-day struggles and challenges. The support Mob received from the Body Improvement Club, a group of muscular jocks helping him to become physically stronger, reflected the realistic nature of character development – it takes time and support, just as it does in real life.
One standout feature of this show was the unique art style and storyboarding techniques the creators used to make the story easier to follow along with. After reading many comments about the series' development, I quickly learned that animation quality is a key factor when it comes to viewership and popularity of these shows. Nonetheless, I couldn’t help but admire all the work put into such a masterpiece of this show.
What made 'Mob Psycho 100' captivating was its emotional depth. The series masterfully balanced humor, action, and heartfelt moments, making each rewatch a rich and fulfilling experience. The complex and warm relationships between characters, such as Mob's bond with his goofy, yet supportive mentor Reigen and the vibrant spirit Dimple, added intricate layers to the story, drawing me in even further.
As I’m currently exploring other fantastic anime’s to watch, I can confidently say 'Mob Psycho 100' opened my eyes to the immense potential of anime as a medium for deep, emotionally resonant storytelling and artistic innovation. It set a high standard for what I now expect from anime, and it remains a series that I can watch repeatedly without getting tired of watching Mob’s impeccable character growth.
WCEJ Thornton Foundation Low-Income Scholarship
With a frog in my throat and sweat on my brow, I raised my shaky hands to answer the teacher’s question in front of the entire AP Earth and Environmental class. I was sure I knew the answer, but maybe I didn’t. Maybe, just maybe, I was wrong. Maybe I’ll make a complete fool of myself and have red cheeks to go along with my series of aforementioned bodily ailments that I’m sure everyone can see. At this point, it feels like my soul has left my body, and I can see myself watching me. My nervous eyes dart to my paper as I hear my name called aloud. “Sand and clay.”, I answer and I’m right. I knew it, and I knew I knew it.
Speaking out in public in front of my class of twenty-plus people was a big achievement. I’m learning to overcome my fear of public speaking and actively engaging in classroom discussions. Throughout my academic journey, I had always been a quiet person, hesitant to raise my hand or voice my thoughts to avoid drawing attention. However, I realized that this reluctance was hindering my learning and personal growth. Determined to change, I make a conscious effort every day to speak up and ask questions of my teachers, particularly in my AP Earth and Environmental class.
At first, it was challenging. My heart would feel as though it was racing every time I tried to speak up, my ears would burn from the glares of my peers in pure embarrassment. I've always been confident in my critical thinking skills. Answering homework at home on paper or behind a screen, no problem. But speaking it aloud in a room full of strangers or showcasing my vulnerability of needing help has made me doubt myself in crucial moments of my student life.
One particular instance stands out in my memory. During a complex lecture on Earth's systems, I found myself confused about the role of global wind patterns. Instead of remaining silent as I would have in the past, I took a deep breath raised my hand, and requested help, maybe a different explanation. My teacher then explained the concept again but used an analogy that made it much clearer for me to grasp. But I also noticed other students shaking their heads in agreement with the analogy explanation accompanied by a slightly audible “uh hmm”. This moment was a turning point for me, as I realized that asking questions aloud not only helped me but could also benefit my classmates who might have had similar doubts as well.
This experience taught me several valuable lessons. Firstly, I learned that most fears are self-imposed and that stepping out of our comfort zone is essential for growth. Secondly, I discovered that most teachers genuinely appreciate students who show interest and engagement in their subjects. My relationships with my teachers improved significantly as a result of my increased participation. I showed up for myself and my classmates when I faced my fear with the courage to speak up. Lastly, I realized that asking questions is not a sign of weakness or ignorance, but rather a demonstration of curiosity, bravery, and humbleness.
The confidence I gained from this achievement has had a ripple effect on other aspects of my life. I now find it easier to express my thoughts and opinions in various settings, from casual conversations with friends to formal presentations. This newfound self-assurance has also motivated me to take on leadership roles in extracurricular activities, such as becoming an active member of both the National Honors Society and Future Business Leaders of America Club.
Looking to the future, I hope to build upon this achievement in several ways. I aim to further develop my public speaking skills by joining the interpersonal DECA Club and participating in various internships and educational programs. As I prepare for college, I look forward to engaging in more challenging academic discussions and collaborative projects. In the long term, I hope to pursue a career in interactive Journalism, where the ability to ask insightful questions and communicate ideas will be crucial.
Jennifer Hartwig Scholarship
As a child, I had an insatiable appetite for books. I was rarely seen without my latest literary obsession, carrying it with me everywhere I went, even sneaking a read under the covers when I was supposed to be sleeping. Despite my deep love for reading, I couldn't help but notice the lack of representation of people of color (POC) in the books available to me, particularly in genres like fantasy, romance, and comedy. It felt unjust that there wasn't much ethnic diversity in the types of children's books I adored, outside of those focused on historical topics. Although I did appreciate nonfiction, I longed for the opportunity to explore fantastical worlds through the eyes of characters who looked like me, an African American girl. This longing for representation and the power of storytelling led me to decide to pursue English and Journalism as my majors in college. Journalism, in particular, captivated me during my introductory-level class, and I found that the skills and knowledge I gained from my English classes complemented my journey into the journalistic world.
Adapting to the unique structures required for journalism and receiving feedback from mentors empowered me to grow as a writer and advocate for diverse representation in literature. With a degree in Journalism and English, I plan to impact the world for the better by developing diverse storytelling that amplifies underrepresented voices and fosters empathy across cultures. My primary goal is to establish a platform where stories from marginalized communities are not only heard but also celebrated. I aim to challenge stereotypes and promote a more inclusive narrative by highlighting the experiences, struggles, and triumphs of people from diverse backgrounds.
I will focus on investigative journalism to uncover social injustices and bring attention to issues often overlooked by mainstream media. Through compelling, well-researched articles and multimedia content, I intend to inform and engage the public, inspiring them to take action and advocate for change. Additionally, I plan to mentor aspiring writers from diverse backgrounds, equipping them with the tools and opportunities to share their unique perspectives. By creating a new generation of storytellers, I could provide an inspirational future for young writers who aspire to lead the way in journalistic creativity.
Overall, I believe that this scholarship could help me pave a path for others who often feel underrepresented in the media, providing them with an outlet to explore and showcase their lifestyle, religion, culture, and interests in various ways all over the world.
God Hearted Girls Scholarship
Over time, My faith in Jesus has been a source of comfort and encouragement from a young age when I first started going to Sunday school. In moments of doubt or difficulty, I have turned to prayer and scripture, finding peace in the promises of God. These practices instilled in me a sense of peace and confidence, knowing that I am not alone in my struggles as I listen to other people’s stories. Jesus' teachings on perseverance and faithfulness have inspired me to approach my studies with a determined and resilient mindset. When faced with challenging subjects or daunting exams, I remind myself of the sayings my Grandmother would tell me after reading the various stories included in the Bible on early Saturday mornings. 'Even when times get hard and you start feeling frustrated, keep going and God will always be with you along the way.'
As I continue my educational journey, I plan to implement my faith in several practical ways. First, I will maintain a consistent prayer life, seeking God's guidance and strength in all my academic endeavors. Before exams or important assignments, I will take time to rely on the previous blessings that God has given me. Staying grateful for his teachings will help my self-confidence grow with time.
Second, I will strive to manifest the principles of integrity and honesty in my studies. Jesus' teachings emphasize the importance of truth and righteousness, and I am committed to upholding these values in my academic work. This means avoiding dishonest shortcuts with the necessary effort to achieve my goals. When I first started doing my classes online, I was tempted to breeze through my assignments by using other resources that could have improved my grades without any actual effort from me, Without my inner conscience guiding me toward earning my grades truthfully and reaching out to my teachers for much-needed guidance, I wouldn't have been able to accomplish my goals earnestly.
Third, I will seek to be a source of encouragement and support to my peers. Jesus taught us to love and serve others, and I believe that forming a collaborative and positive learning environment is a way to live out these beliefs. Whether it's through study groups at school, peer tutoring, or simply offering a kind word, I want to contribute to the success and well-being of those around me.
Lastly, I will continually seek to grow in my faith and knowledge, recognizing that education is a lifelong journey. I will remain open to learning not only from my academic studies but also from the experiences and wisdom of my elders. By staying connected to my faith community and engaging in regular Bible study, I will ensure that my spiritual growth keeps pace with my academic progress in the future.
Once Upon a #BookTok Scholarship
Inspired by my discovery of #BookTok, I can say that I´ve been blown away by the amount of fantasy,
romance, and science fiction novels that have taken the internet by storm since the release of “The
Hunger Games” series. I´d like to congratulate Sarah J. Maas for her fantasy series “A Court of Thorns
and Roses”. This twist-fantasy retelling of Beauty and the Beast reclaimed my passion for reading during my sophomore year of high school. The long-lasting effects of this captivating prequel connected me and hundreds of people across the book community for countless reasons. For most young adult
readers, this novel was able to capture their attention through the expansion of the author´s world-
building strategy as they followed the characters further on into the well-crafted tale.
The reason this book belongs on my bookshelf is due to the relatability to the main character, Feyre. Like many female protagonists, Feyre grapples with the struggle of being heard within her family, especially as the youngest child. Yet, what sets her apart is her understated strength and the utilization of her skills to fiercely defend all she holds dear, through pure determination and strategic skill.
Secondly, ¨Fourth Wing¨ by Rebecca Yarros, stands as the perfect representation of balanced detail and imagination. This dystopian novel has been able to accurately portray an influx of important characters with different, yet fitting descriptions. One of the many things Yarros can incorporate into the
storytelling is the wide range of character diversity. Each main or side character has a distinct trait, not
just stemming from their race, but also from their mental or physical capabilities. It´s not every day that
you read a fantasy novel and discover that two of the main characters communicate through sign
language, yet it´s executed so beautifully in the diction. When an author can include such an overlooked concept in their writing, it speaks volumes to those who can relate to those characters and readers who seek inclusivity and representation. The ¨Fourth Wing¨ has a special place on my bookshelf for this reason alone.
Last, but not least, there´s one more book that should get the final shoutout for bookshelf worthiness,
which is ¨Legendborn¨ by Tracy Deonn. When I first heard of this book, I assumed it was going to be
following the usual path of a hero´s exposition where the main protagonist discovers their powers along
with a mission to save the world from evil forces. However, this book completely changed my view
during my first few reads. First things first, black female protagonists are easily overlooked in science
fiction novels when people can´t relate to their hardship and traumatic backgrounds.
However, in this story, Bree is a struggling college student who has felt pressured almost her entire life
due to generational trauma. When she discovers that there is a secret society living among her peers,
she manages to sneak through their security in search of discovery. Later in the story, the audience
learns that Bree experiences imposter syndrome which isn´t talked about enough for young adults. As a black teen, I have experienced what it felt like to not truly belong in a different society from what I
accustomed to. Transferring from a primary school where minorities from lower-income families were the majority to a junior high school filled with students from families with a single income above six figures that didn’t look like me, I too struggled to find myself. My connection to Bree’s experiences made it easier for me to enjoy reading about how she navigated her new world with the turn of every page.
