Jazmin Quiahua

Bio

My parents migrated to the United States at seventeen because they wanted their future children to live in a place that would provide them with opportunities to succeed. I'm thankful they made this decision because I was born with many dreams. At the age of twelve, I made an earnest decision to pursue a career in neurosurgery. While some may view this as a daunting decision, my passion for serving my community and making a meaningful impact in the world fuels my drive to inspire others. In my role as a Student Advisor for the Department of Education in Oregon, I place a strong emphasis on the significance of imparting precise and impartial historical knowledge, as well as striving for equity in our education system. It is my honor to advocate for our students and offer constructive input to the Advisory Committee to encourage the incorporation of diverse histories from marginalized ethnic communities. I am delighted to embark on the initial stages of my career journey. I have secured a job shadowing opportunity at a nearby hospital, an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience. My interest in medicine makes this opportunity all the more exciting as it offers a glimpse of my future career. This experience has reinforced my commitment to pursue my degree with even more dedication and enthusiasm. The pursuit of education holds a special place in my heart. Despite my family's financial constraints, they consistently extend their unwavering support towards my ambitions. Scholarships would undoubtedly provide the assistance I require to reach my aspirations.

Less than 10% of Hispanics or Latinos work in healthcare. Many who want to pursue a career in the medical field often; cannot because of money issues. I have big goals, and becoming a surgeon is one of them. I want to inspire people in our Hispanic community that it is possible to pursue a career in the medical field. Most importantly, I want to give back to our community and hope I make a positive impact. My mother has always been sick. We constantly had to, the hospital. When I was around eight years old, she had pain and a fever that kept coming and going. As the days progressed, she got worse until one day; she could not bare it. My father took her to the hospital, and that was when they told her she had cholecystitis, one more day, she would not have made it. A few years later, she had very severe pneumonia. A few years after, she broke her leg at a park; unfortunately, this was during COVID and a wildfire; therefore, she had to wait about a week to get surgery. Recently, she was at high risk for developing diabetes. I would make meals for the rest of the family. I constantly checked up on her, offered water, and checked if she needed assistance heading to the restroom, but still, I felt helpless. I want to become a surgeon because I would like to help people in ways I could not before. When someone is sick, they tend to feel negative about themselves because they feel useless. I hope I can make their lives easier and fully support; reassure them that it is okay to ask for help. What makes a good doctor is someone who is compassionate and can communicate not only with patients but with families as well. Although they tend to overlook the father, who may look calm, he's freaking out on the inside. The older sibling may act tough to reassure their younger siblings; they are just as scared. I know because I was one of them. I often had to force myself not to cry and shake from anxiety because breaking down meant my sister and brother would too. I understand doctors cannot promise you anything, but I would feel better if they comforted me and did not treat my mother as another case to get by. I will find ways to make medications and treatments more accessible. I will be able to communicate; successfully as I speak fluent Spanish and English. I will donate to programs that provide financial help and support. I will team up with other physicians and healthcare providers to provide well-rounded care for complex cases. Engage with other professionals to impart knowledge and discuss the best treatment courses for my patients. Most importantly, I will reassure families and let them know I will do my best. I hope to provide the best care to my patients. Being able to be compassionate but also stern is very important. We should stand up when doubted but also be team leaders. I'll communicate with my patients and their families and hope I can reassure them in any way. I hope to become the doctor whom the younger me wanted, a doctor who cares, but, in the end, I want to inspire others in our Hispanic community to pursue careers in the medical field and hope they can learn something from my story.
