I believe change can begin in any generation, but young people have a drive that could make an impact. Social issues such as LGBTQ+ rights, police brutality, wealth inequality, and immigration are something that I personally fight to bring awareness to, and something that I am always willing to be further educated on. I believe that the power of social media has greatly risen in the past two decades, and with apps dominated by adolescents such as TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter, you could use these media platforms as a voice to reach larger audiences and bring attention to situations. If given the opportunity, I would manage social media campaigns for a social issue to bring awareness, partnering with influencers that hold a connection to the issue. I feel as if older generations tend to underestimate the power of a social media influencer, but it is noteworthy that a single person behind a camera or laptop screen can garner mass amounts of followers that can make a hashtag trend or sell out a single product, all from their influence and approval. The platform that they have could be shifted to bring focus to an important issue, and by partnering with them, you would be able to bring a new crowd of people to an important topic. As an adolescent myself who spends more time on social media apps than they really should, I have an insight into how trends work, the current 'hot topic', and what internet celebrities people are tuning into. Social issues should not be made into a trend, but they could be made into an important matter that is easily recognizable through a slogan or hashtag. Of course, this would be in a way that is respectful and does not trivialize the topic, but makes an instant connection in your mind when that said phrase is said, spoken, or Tweeted out. By using the power of an influencer, or multiple, having them not only speak on this issue but using a phrase that embodies the solution to the social issue, could reach out to young people across the globe, through many platforms, that could encourage change. Social media would only be the beginning, and from then on, the social issue could then go on to reach celebrities with even more fans and bigger platforms, philanthropists who have a passion for said topic, and even governed officials who would be willing to address the issue. A young mind houses creativity never before seen, and with this, and the power of an Instagram post or simple Tweet, so much information could be spread to bring awareness and help those in need.
