This Website/Social Media like platform was created for a STEM Capstone project. Students participating in this project had to find a topic, problem, and then create a solution. I found that there is a problem with the lack of readily available information on current news and activities to promote sustainability in Hawaii on social media platforms. Despite information about sustainability being put out onto social media to encourage participation in Hawaii, people’s inability to find information on events in their community is still occurring. Social media has a reputation of being used for mostly entertainment purposes by younger generations. The problem has negatively impacted the community and those who want to help make a difference because there could be more participation and community service being done if the information was easier to find. A possible cause of this problem is there is so much content put onto social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram, it is easy to become distracted or overwhelmed with information.
The gap or problem that I have identified is the lack of readily available information on current news and activities to promote sustainability in Hawaii on social media platforms. Many teens and people in society are highly influenced by what they see on social media and the internet. Although social media is often used for entertainment purposes, it can be used as a useful tool in spreading awareness. My build will be a reliable social media space where people will be able to share posts based on sustainability like events around the islands, important news, or new ways to help. The platform will also provide basic information regarding sustainability to spread awareness of issues as well as ways to help. This will show that social media can be used to our advantage and turned into a helpful learning tool. My build is unique because it is a social media, like Instagram, but it is only focused on sustainability in our own specific community. Sometimes it is difficult to find events and ways to help in our community because social media that does exist includes the entire world and all topics. This project build will give people access to information only for sustainability in their area. My build is an example of how social media can be used in a positive and productive way
Climate and environmental issues are ongoing, there is a lack of sustainability awareness and interest in the community. Social media is already used by a majority of the population. Using it as a tool for sharing information would benefit everyone in the world. By creating a social media platform solely based on sustainability in Hawaii, she hopes there will be more participation and interest in making the community more sustainable.
