I aspire to become a psychiatrist as I am deeply passionate about aiding others, conducting research, and promoting mental health.
Starting at a young age, I experienced the impact of mental health issues. Through my struggles, I developed a commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. I aim to equip myself with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide the support and guidance individuals need.
Throughout my academics, I have consistently tried to keep good grades within the '90s to 100s. I believe I'm a diligent, dedicated, and hardworking student. I am always striving for excellence. I got invited to the National Society of High School Scholars due to my grades at my school. Beyond academics, I have taken opportunities to give back to my community through volunteering. I am devoted to creating a positive change in the lives of those in my community through activities like volunteering my time, cleaning the streets, or contributing baked goods for fundraising events.
Alongside my academics, I indulge in diverse creative pursuits. Baking, cooking, gardening, and art are my favorite hobbies. These activities allow me to channel my creativity, express myself, and wind down. Whether I am experimenting with a new recipe, creating a piece of art, cultivating a beautiful garden, or exploring new techniques, I find satisfaction in the process and the ability to bring myself happiness and share my hobbies with those around me.

The community has played a great role in giving me hope for a brighter future. Growing up has made me more aware of how much I can influence others around me. Hence, my life is reflected in community life. The strength of connection, resilience, and kindness has always ruled my experience, especially when I get a chance to contribute to my community. Through all those experiences, I learned that we are all interconnected and that giving back creates a ripple effect that can bring about long-lasting changes.
Giving back to the community is what I remember as a significant part of my contribution planning of donation programs in my school. Being president of the Leo's Club, I had the responsibility of leading a group of students on initiatives to support persons in need. One of the most successful of our projects was the holiday food and gift drive. It started as a small idea to help families in the neighborhood struggling economically during the holidays but turned quickly into a project that brought the whole school together.
Planning was not easy. Coordination of donations, ensuring that the drive reached those that truly needed it, and many other factors posed great challenges. However, through the setbacks, I witnessed firmness and kindness from the people around me. The drive was a huge success, far above our expectations. We collected food, clothes, and toys enough to serve multiple families and spread a feeling of happiness to our community.
The power of community and connection is what I learned from this experience. It was not just about what people got from the activity; it was also about the relationships created along the way. It was the teamwork, the smiles exchanged when donations came, and the sense of pride shared by everyone knowing that they made a real difference. Such moments taught me that when people come together for a common cause, there is almost nothing that we cannot accomplish. Even the smallest acts of kindness could make a difference in someone else's life: giving a toy, or helping a friend. That is the connection that gave me hope for the future.
That also resilient the drive. There were moments when it felt like we might not gather enough donations or that we might not meet our cap. But classmates, teachers, and people from the community kept us going. The determination to prove that, together, the community can surmount any obstacle also continued. So far, this has taught me that resilience isn't not facing adversity; it's the determination to keep going even when everything gets gray.
This project has validated my belief that kindness and understanding are the two true mediums of change. I know that in the future, I want to be in communities where I can make a difference. From mental health advocacy to community service, I carry with me the message of connection, resilience, and kindness that I have witnessed. Such principles ignite hope for me in the future, that the size of impact doesn't matter once we impact others; it causes ripples that last generations.
Bryent Smothermon PTSD Awareness Scholarship
Growing up as the child of a veteran has shaped who I am. The effects of service-related PTSD on my parent have been something to watch, both direct and indirect. Through their journey, I have learned so much about resilience, the intricacies of trauma, and the need for support for these great individuals. Even though I never served in the military, I have spent my life as a child of a veteran. This has given me a special vision of PTSD and its effects that inspire me to take a path that can help others who were and are still experiencing such situations.
The very first lesson I learned is that PTSD is not just something that cures itself. It has no clearly defined endpoint or single solution. Seeing my parent as they struggle because of PTSD has always meant bearing witness to the impact on the entire family, not on the affected individual alone. There were times when their moods were so erratic that they were reliving past painful memories, and they were difficult for me to understand as a child. I have learned that PTSD is an invisible kind of wound because it is not always visible, but people will feel its impact.
Watching my parent cope with these things has educated me in the power and resilience that people can possess. Although at many times it will feel like the person communicates a truth of solitude inside, I have seen how such individuals manage to fight their way through it and find ways to cope with it. Recovery is not linear, but it is possible. That's why I believe that everybody has the right to equip themselves with the proper tools, either a veteran or a civilian, and support for their healing journey.
I also realize how much I have grown older over the years and how veterans have not received the right attention in many aspects. Most veterans, like my parent, do not feel right asking for help because of the stigma of PTSD associated with unavailable resources. I also learned that one of the greatest hindrances to healing is silence on mental issues when especially out of the military. Thus, I'd love to be part of the solution advocating for better mental health care for veterans, working to reduce the stigma surrounding help, or just listening and offering a shoulder to lean on during hard times.
On my own, I want to be able to share what I know and understand so that more veterans can be offered assistance during their current struggle with PTSD. I want to create an acceptance space to talk about their struggles with fellow veterans without any kind of fear of judgment. Setting awareness of the specific and unique challenges that veterans face and advocating to make mental health care resources more accessible to those who have served is another goal of mine. The most important thing to me is that veterans know they are not alone in having such experiences and that they can seek help without any more fear of being dismissed or overlooked.
So, in essence, my experiences as the child of a veteran have opened my eyes to kindness, patience, and advocacy. I want to put these lessons into practice and assist veterans on their journey of healing and restoration, so no one else has to suffer in silence. I wish to pay tribute to my parent's experience along with those of countless others who have served our country, demonstrating that their pain is quite real and assistance is within reach.
Elijah's Helping Hand Scholarship Award
I have been able to see the rough impact of mental health difficulties, suicide, and queer experiences, not just in me, but also in many of my peers. My journey as a trans man comprises identity, mental health, and a world full of disadvantages that often fail to understand or accept people like me. These experiences show the value of support, resilience, and advocacy, hence, influencing my interest in the mental health field.
Suicide has often been a nagging theme throughout my life. It has gripped suicidal thoughts in the darkest moments of my life, and I know quite a few others who have unfortunately succumbed to it. Sometimes the pain of having to exist in a world that so often rejects you seems so overwhelming that it makes suicide the only escape. I lost one to suicide, and those memories increased my commitment to saving someone's life, as it often does. I realize how easily people can overlook the pain of another, particularly where identity or mental health issues are concerned. This is why I aspire to ensure that mental health care is accessible, easy to discuss, and supportive for everyone, especially those more vulnerable or at heightened risk.
It is in understanding the challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals regarding mental health as a transman that one comes to appreciate the reality. Most of these individuals face isolation, rejection, and some form of discrimination that leads them to greater peril of developing depression, anxiety, or suicidal thoughts. On a personal level, I struggled with these things, but I derived motivation from community strength, and learning to accept myself in the end. The road has not been easy because over and over again, the system has failed to recognize the specific mental health aspects concerning gender identity, making them feel sometimes unsupported. That drives me towards making the future better for LGBTQIA+ so that they may enjoy necessary care without judgment or discrimination.
Hearing about issues of mental health, suicide, and LGBTQIA+ struggles has always aligned strongly with my dedication to pursuing a career in mental health. I wish to be part of that remaking of conditions that would align complex issues into viable interventions. In particular, I want to ease the mental health access of children and adolescents who might have trouble relating their feelings to their gender identities. Today's health systems are often confusing and inaccessible, especially when young people have no family support. I want to work on making this process smooth so people will not be denied access to care.
They need a prerequisite in the field to become proficient professionals. I am advocating for mental health services in the LGBTQIA community: trained professionals in the field of that particular amazing yet sometimes strange experience the persons have. I don't believe as a trans individual that anybody on this planet isn't allowed to be seen and heard for what they are; and maybe, I strive to open up shores for access to this kind of care to go through with.
No one should live a life contrary to acceptance and understanding. Underlying my drive is my experience with mental health issues and suicide and my status as a member of the LGBTQIA+ cohort. My driving motivation for the understanding and inclusive mental health system continues to be my appeal. I hope to encourage others to know that they need not walk this journey in isolation.
Ryan Yebba Memorial Mental Health Scholarship
During my considerable K-12 time, I have advocated for social progress and change, especially regarding bullying and harassment. The goal of establishing a school community based on respect, empathy, and kindness was spearheaded by me and student council presidents from other grades, along with many clubs. A key intervention I helped implement required that all students receive training about the negative consequences of bullying and develop empathy for students in need. Anonymous and safe reporting channels were set up for students to voice their feelings and experiences about the negative impact of bullying. This service taught me an appreciation for the impact of bullying on students' mental health and academic performance.
My approach to promoting proactive prevention efforts involves designing programs such as peer mentoring, which pairs older and younger students to develop healthy relationships. In this manner, I have helped students feel more supported and heard, thereby contributing to a school culture that discourages bullying and embraces inclusiveness for everyone. My advocacy includes improving the training teachers and staff receive to effectively confront bullying and about how to empower students to deal with the emotional ramifications.
The detrimental effects of bullying on students' mental health cannot be overstated. There is sufficient evidence to suggest that bullying and harassment result in long-term issues of anxiety, depression, or suicidal ideation. To this effect, I aspire to join the mental health field and offer support and guidance to those who suffer due to these issues.
My personal experiences with mental health have further encouraged me to support others amid this complex system, especially children and adolescents who frequently lack sufficient adult support and resources. I want to work on ways to improve access to proper treatment options for young people suffering from the effects of bullying.
The current landscape for accessing mental health treatment is filled with complications. Families often face multiple challenges ranging from referrals to insurance arrangements to long wait times, all of which delay critical junctures toward care. As I prepare to be a mental health professional, I will advocate for systems that guarantee seamless access to care while improving transparency and integration within the mental health treatment landscape. Schools, mental health providers, and policymakers will be engaged by me to generate better support systems for students dealing with bullying and harassment trauma.
In addition, I want to build schools' mental health literacy so that teachers, parents, and students will be able to better see the early signs of mental health issues. Should this knowledge be ingrained in the culture, rather than being a potential help, individuals would be stopped from reaching more and more critical failings due to therapy stigma.
My fight against bullying and interest in the improvement of mental health norms have now cemented my decision to pursue a career in this field. Basically, if given adequate support and resources, I believe that children and adolescents will overcome bullying and mental health hardships. I intend to be a catalyst for such change through treatment streamlining, mental health promotion, and creating a more holistic and supportive environment for all students.
Brian J Boley Memorial Scholarship
I am pursuing a degree in the mental health field because of my overwhelming interest in the human mind's ability to hide complexities and difficulties that many persons endure due to mental illness. In their own right and through community experiences, the author has witnessed the hindrances that these miserable states create. Hence, I had a conviction that I would want to serve in this role while I was watching these things happen.
My mental health story has very much influenced my need for supportive, accessible care. I also understand many of the barriers faced by others, especially within disenfranchised populations that may have limited mental health service availability or carry stigma toward them. I saw the mental health struggles whom they were isolated from others or did not know whom to turn to for help. This is why I am tuned to focusing on the area of psychiatry, where I can forge my passion for psychology along with my desire to help others contest and vanquish their mental health issues.
By studying for a degree in psychology and eventually becoming a psychiatrist, I hope to try and remedy some of these disparities in mental health care. I want to champion those who feel routinely neglected or put on the margins of the healthcare system. One of the goals I have is to make mental health services more accessible, customarily for those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds who may find it hard to finance good care. This encompasses, in addition to clinical practice, working toward changing the narratives about mental health, stripping them of stigmatization, and advocating for policies that facilitate easy access to care for everyone.
Besides clinical work, I want to be involved in advocacy and education for mental health. I will work with communities and create safe spaces for conversation about mental health to dismantle stigma and fear, which often prevent many from asking for help. I will channel my leadership experiences and communication skills toward creating awareness and building support systems for those unsure of where to get help.
The future I envisage will be one where mental health is equated with physical health, whereby persons will seek help when they need it, free from judgment. Through my education and career, I will endeavor to be part of that change—be it one person at a time, through direct clinical intervention, by developing mental health resources, or in advocacy for awareness and accessibility within the communities I serve. By doing this, I chiefly hope to carve out a positive footprint across the mental health landscape and help give birth to a world full of support and understanding for those who need it.
Joieful Connections Scholarship
A whole lot of things have happened to my journey towards higher education. And with them come necessary challenges and accomplishments that will now prepare me to pursue my objectives fiercely and passionately. Well, I am a high school senior; I have already learned so much about education, hard work, and determination that will be my guides during these times of higher education. From being a student council vice president to leading the Leo's Club, I have developed strong leadership that has helped me manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining concentration in my academics. This experience from being a student leader has also taught me the value of collaboration, communication, and community, for they are critical to the success of an individual in higher education.
One of the most defining aspects of this journey is how I manage to balance my academic responsibilities with the health issues I have been faced with. As a person with an invisible disability, I have learned to advocate for myself through my academic and extracurricular activities while managing both my mental and physical health. In this way, I have learned how to cultivate resilience and self-awareness. As I've moved through this process, I've also come to a better understanding of how health- especially mental health- becomes intertwined with education and the importance of establishing accessible resources for those who are struggling. I have done serious learning on how to balance mental and physical well-being with the demands of high academic workloads. Due to sheer perseverance, I have become increasingly self-reflective and adaptable, both skills that I know will serve me in my post-secondary education.
The field of study in which I want to pursue my higher study is psychology. While taking an associate degree in psychology at ACC, I found a deep proclivity toward the study of the human mind and behavior, along with all the factors that influence mental health. This field appeals to me as I want to use my acquired knowledge and skills to change people's lives, especially those with mental health problems, who often feel isolated and without outlet. Having been on the track of mental health issues myself, I realize how much one can benefit from having access to mental health care and services. So now, that experience makes me want to become a psychiatrist who provides these valuable resources and care for underserved communities that usually do not have an adequate supply of mental health services. Personal experiences in both the mental health and healthcare domains propel my commitment to this area, and I care deeply about effecting change in the lives of individuals who face similar issues.
This journey does not stop at the associate's degree. I would like to study further, pursue my bachelor's, and finally get a doctorate in psychology. I want to leave a lasting impact in the field of mental health by tailoring accessible and empathetic care for all, most especially for those within underrepresented communities. I believe that as I push through the difficulties before me and build upon my experiences, I can also be part of the solution and bring hope to those who most desperately need it.
Learner Mental Health Empowerment for Health Students Scholarship
Mental health is a critical topic in my life, especially as a student going through the pressures of high school, dual credit courses, and preparing for the future. The balancing act of academics, extracurriculars, and life can become too much at times, and because I understand the importance of mental health, I can deal with stress better and understand the hardships I face. I have an invisible disability, and from that experience, I have learned to appreciate a healthy mind and body. Mental health is not just overcoming difficulties, but learning to prosper despite them.
Mental health directly determines my ability to focus, perform well in school, and keep positive relationships with the people around me. My academic workload can be very demanding, especially with dual credit classes and responsibilities as president of Leo's Club and vice president of student council. At times, this can lead to burnout, and without finding time to address mental health, losing the floor becomes very probable. I was able to step back whenever stress became too much or required help and pay attention to my mental health. I incorporate self-care activities such as journaling, hanging out with friends, and taking time for myself.
The work of advocating for mental health in my community is close to my heart. Engaging in discussions about it is key to combatting stigma and creating a supportive environment. As president of the Leo's Club, I've enhanced mental health discourse by arranging events where students are encouraged to speak openly about their challenges. Whether this is through guest speakers, mental health awareness weeks, or just providing a platform for students to air their thoughts, I have taken it upon myself that mental health is something taken seriously within the school community. It is important to fight the stereotype that mental health is something to hide, rather, embrace the fact that everyone has mental health needs just as anyone else has physical health needs.
I stand in support of mental health at home by being openly vocal about my experiences and urging family members to articulate their feelings. I often tell my friends and loved ones that it is acceptable to ask for help when things get tough. Armed with the presence of my service dog, I hope to normalize medical support animals and show several faces under which health help is offered. By so doing, I hope to construct an environment that will mean more understanding and less isolating to those battling through their issues.
Ultimately, mental health matters to me because it affects all aspects of my life, from school to the health of my being. As a student, I want to promote awareness of available resources to my immediate community and create a sense of comfort in seeking help. I would like to help cultivate an atmosphere of understanding, where mental health is honored, and no one has to bear their struggles alone, through sharing my own experiences and involvement in various mental health initiatives.
Caminos de Éxito: The Jose Prado Scholarship
I am a firm believer in the life-changing potential of education. I see it as a key that can unlock potential, broaden horizons, and foster growth on both an individual and collective level. Education does more than spread knowledge; it nurtures critical thinking, empathy, and a sense of responsibility. These qualities are crucial for fostering innovation, understanding, and positive change in one's self and the world.
On a personal level, education is a journey of self-discovery and empowerment. It equips individuals with the skills and confidence to pursue their passions, overcome challenges, and achieve their goals. Through education, people can break the cycle of poverty, gain economic independence, improve their quality of life, and pursue their dreams. It offers a pathway to a brighter future, opening doors to opportunities that might remain closed.
For example, consider the impact of education on someone who grows up in an underprivileged community. Access to quality education can give them the tools to rise above their circumstances, pursue higher education or vocational training, and secure stable employment. This not only transforms their life but also has a ripple effect on their family and community, inspiring others to follow a similar path and contribute to collective upliftment.
In a broader societal context, education is a powerful catalyst for social change and progress. An educated populace is better equipped to address complex issues such as inequality, climate change, and public health. It promotes civic engagement, fostering informed citizens who can participate meaningfully in democratic processes and advocate for their rights and the rights of others.
Moreover, education cultivates empathy and cultural awareness, breaking down barriers of prejudice and fostering a more inclusive and cohesive society. When individuals from diverse backgrounds come together in a learning environment, they share perspectives and experiences, enriching each other's understanding and promoting mutual respect. This diversity of thought and experience is essential for innovation and problem-solving in an increasingly interconnected world.
In my own life, the pursuit of knowledge has been a source of continual growth and inspiration. Each new concept learned and skill acquired has expanded my capabilities and deepened my understanding of the world. The ability to help others learn and grow is profoundly rewarding, creating a cycle of continuous improvement and support.
In conclusion, the transformative power of education lies in its ability to uplift individuals, empower communities, and drive societal progress. By investing in education and ensuring its accessibility to all, we can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute to the greater good. This conviction in the power of education fuels my dedication to lifelong learning and to support educational initiatives that make a meaningful difference in people's lives.
Good People, Cool Things Scholarship
As someone with a creative passion for cooking and baking, I cannot express enough how much these activities make the world a better place. Cooking and baking are not only my hobbies but also my ways of spreading joy to the people around me. I love to give my creations as gifts, donate them to charity organizations, or provide them to those who need them the most.
Over the years, my passion for cooking and baking has brought much joy to the people around me. I have made special dishes as thank-you gifts for my teachers, cooked delicious meals for my family to allow them to relax and take a break, and even brought my family together to enjoy a nice meal and bond. In addition, I also like to donate my food to those in need, such as the homeless or struggling families. I find that not only are my creations beautiful in presentation and flavor, but they can also bring happiness to many people in my life.
If I had an additional 24 hours in a day, I would use it to work and earn more money. This would enable me to spend more time baking and cooking delicious food. Moreover, with the additional time, I would like to bake and cook more food to donate. I am confident that my passion for cooking and baking has the power to make a positive impact on other people's lives. I understand the value of providing for those in need because I have been in that situation before, and if I can remove even a bit of stress from someone or a family and give them a full belly, I would love to.
I feel most creative when I am bored or anxious. Cooking and baking have been my hobbies since I picked them up as a way of coping with my anxiety. They have proven to be a good outlet for me, and they have even given me some power to overcome my social anxiety and financial situation. Cooking and baking have allowed me to show gratitude to someone and express love to them even when I am too anxious to take or write to them. I also don't have the money to buy gifts for the people around me, so I use homemade edible gifts because it's more affordable for me and helps me when I get anxious.
Overall, cooking and baking have been an essential part of my life, and I believe they bring joy and happiness to the people around me. If I had an extra 24 hours in a day to devote to my hobby, I believe I could use it to bring happiness to others and provide for those in need.

Life is unpredictable, and obstacles may arise unexpectedly. Nevertheless, it is during these trials that we cultivate our resilience and promote our personal development. Every individual faces a unique set of difficulties and obstacles throughout their lifetime. However, how one responds to these challenges reflects character and shapes identity. Whether one chooses to overcome these obstacles with perseverance, resilience, and determination or succumbs to defeat can make all the difference in life.
Seven months ago, my beloved aunt passed away due to a seizure. I cannot even express how much she meant to me. She was a role model and a mother figure who held a profound significance in my life.
Following my parents' divorce, I moved into my father's home along with my younger autistic brother, escaping from my mother's abusive environment. During this time, my aunt selflessly came to live with our family to help my father care for us. Her presence was a source of comfort and support for us all.
I distinctly recall her nurturing presence. She came into my life when I needed it the most. She created a haven of safety and trust, fostering an environment where I could freely communicate and express myself. Her unwavering encouragement and support empowered me to embrace my authentic self and let me know it was okay to be a kid after years of parenting my brother.
She exhibited boundless patience and kindness in every way she could. Throughout our lives, she was a steady pillar of support, whether helping with schoolwork or creating delicious meals. Her presence was a constant source of comfort and encouragement, and she played a pivotal role in helping me discover my true passions and interests.
I am immensely grateful for the unrelenting support and optimistic outlook she has provided me with. These qualities have played a crucial role in my personal development and progress. Her kindness and empathy towards me will always be cherished and remembered with love.
After my aunt passed away, our family went through a difficult time. My father had to take care of my brother and me by himself. Being the eldest child, I had to step up and take on more household responsibilities like cooking, cleaning, and looking after my younger brother. It was hard for me to balance these tasks with school and other activities, but I did my best to support my family.
During the experience, I faced several challenges which taught me the importance of hard work and taking responsibility. It was particularly tough to explain to my autistic brother why our aunt wouldn't be coming back. But we stuck together as a family and managed to get through it.
Despite this difficult situation, I have found strength in my aunt's words of encouragement to remain persistent and never give up. I am fully committed to the well-being of my loved ones and myself, and I am immensely grateful for the assistance of my father and the unwavering support of our extended family. Their generosity has assisted in managing the expenses of raising children and transportation, which has been a significant relief during these trying times.
Although the loss of my aunt has been a significant setback, I refuse to let it hinder my aspirations. I am determined to succeed and make her proud by accomplishing my goals. As a family, we have faced several challenges, but we stand united in our efforts to persevere. I am confident that our resilience and determination will help us overcome any obstacles that come our way.

I have always had a deep love for animals, finding solace in their presence. Whether it's caring for my dog, or tending to the neighborhood stray cats, I cherish every opportunity to make their lives better and get time with them as they fill me with joy. Beyond that, I try to help everyone around me. I take joy in helping others, whether through a kind word, a supportive gesture, or a lending hand in times of need. In my spare time, I enjoy culinary, both baking and cooking. Preparing delicious meals is not only a creative outlet for me but a way to bring joy to those I care about. Most importantly, my passion for psychiatry drives me to explore the depths of the human mind. I find the complexities of the human psyche fascinating and am dedicated to making a positive impact by understanding and helping those who struggle with their mental well-being.
Growing up in an abusive household with my mom was a daily struggle that I believe no child should ever endure. I found myself, at a young age, not only fighting to survive the turmoil but also raising my younger brother, trying to shield him from the chaos. The situation took an emotional toll on both of us. These experiences led to depression, anxiety, PTSD, and more. Thankfully, when I turned 12, I moved in with my dad, seeking a more stable environment. Just as I was beginning to rebuild my life, I faced the heartbreaking loss of my beloved aunt, who had taken on a motherly role in my life. She became my supporter, guiding me through my dreams and struggles, and providing the love I so desperately needed. Her passing left a void. Through the loving memory of my aunt and the resilience I've developed, I continue to navigate life's challenges, honoring her legacy by pursuing my dreams.
My dream has always been to become a psychiatrist, a passion that's rooted in my desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around me. Mental health is stigmatized too much, preventing countless individuals from seeking help. I'm committed to changing that narrative. I believe in creating a space where people can open up about their struggles without fear, and where they can find the support and guidance to heal. I'm dedicated to making mental health care more accessible and affordable. I want to heavily advocate for younger people, as they are often the most vulnerable in the face of mental health challenges. It's time we break down the barriers and ensure that everyone, regardless of their background, can access the care they deserve.
Reaching my goal of becoming a psychiatrist and helping people is a path I'm committed to, no matter what. Currently, I'm pursuing dual credit classes in the hope of graduating with an associate's degree as a stepping stone toward my dream. It's a way for me to start building the foundation for the knowledge and skills I'll need in my future career. I'm determined to continue my education by obtaining my bachelor's degree and then going to medical school, but I'm aware that it comes with financial hurdles. I'm volunteering my time and donating whatever I can to gain experience and give back to the community. However, financial constraints are a struggle, I'm prepared to put in the extra hours, working overtime and seeking more opportunities to earn the money needed to stay in school. I believe in my dream and the positive impact I can make, and I'm willing to do whatever it takes.

Novels come in a vast realm, and each appeals to different groups of readers. But there's one work that can connect with the audience on a deep, emotional, and intellectual level - "The First Time She Drowned" by Kerry Kletter, and if I could have everyone in the world read one book, it's this one. This author weaves the novel into a beautiful story that explores themes of mental health, family dynamics, and self-discovery.
"The First Time She Drowned" is a captivating coming-of-age story that observes the life of Cassie O'Malley, a young woman who has spent her years in a mental institution due to her mother's faulty accusations. As readers delve into Cassie's life throughout the novel, they gain insight into the complexities of her experiences, emotions, and inner turmoil.
In my opinion, the societal impact of this novel would be remarkable if it were to reach the whole world. The narrative offers a distinctive perspective into the challenges of living with mental illness, which is commonly stigmatized. Movies can leave an impression, shaping our thoughts, beliefs, and dreams. For me, The Princess and the Frog holds a special place in my heart, which is one of the reasons I love Disney. This movie inspires me with its captivating story and stunning animation. It is an enchanting tale of self-discovery and determination. Demonstrating to individuals that through persistence and dedication, they can attain their objectives, even when confronted with obstacles.
The Princess and the Frog take us on a whimsical journey in the heart of New Orleans, following Tiana, a hardworking young woman with a dream of opening her restaurant. For me, the film reflects my desire to achieve greatness through dedication and passion. Watching Tiana work relentlessly to make her dreams come true, I feel inspired to continue to work hard as she does.
This beloved Disney film stands out for its empowering portrayal of its characters. Tiana defies the conventional Disney princess archetype. Rather than relying on a prince or magic, she relies on her wit, hard work, and determination to change her circumstances. She represents a powerful shift in the portrayal of female characters in Disney movies. I find inspiration in the idea that success is not dependent on one's background or gender, but on their capabilities and resilience.
In the face of adversities, Tiana's unyielding perseverance resonates deeply in my heart. Life is filled with challenges, and often, it is easier to give up rather than persist. However, the movie illustrates that perseverance is the key to achieving dreams. Tiana's journey of transforming into a frog and the subsequent trials she faces alongside Prince Naveen underscores the importance of never losing hope, even in the darkest of times. This lesson continues to encourage me when I encounter obstacles in my life.
Love and friendship serve as pivotal themes in the movie, reminding me of the significance of genuine connections in one's life. Tiana and Naveen's growing affection for each other teaches them valuable life lessons, as they learn to look beyond appearances and embrace the essence of a person. This resonates deeply in me, reminding me of the importance of love and companionship in their life journey.
In conclusion, The Princess and the Frog is not just a delightful Disney movie, but an inspiring tale that holds immense significance for many. For me, it serves as my favorite film and a constant source of inspiration. Through the magic of aspiration, breaking stereotypes, the value of perseverance, and the power of love and friendship, the movie sparks a sense of empowerment that continues to shape my life choices and decisions.
Like Tiana, I learned that dreams are achievable through hard work and determination, irrespective of societal norms and expectations. As I face my challenges, I am reminded that perseverance and resilience are vital virtues to achieve success. Furthermore, the movie emphasizes the significance of authentic connections, reminding me to cherish the bonds I forge in my own life. The Princess and the Frog will forever hold a special place in my heart, guiding and inspiring me to embrace my aspirations, break barriers, and spread love and positivity in their journey through life.
M.R. Brooks Scholarship
Living in an abusive household is an incredibly traumatic experience for any child, and for an LGBT child, it can worsen their ability to understand who they are and their identity. The constant fear, emotional rollercoasters, and lack of stability can significantly affect one's mental health and overall well-being. The journey of overcoming such experiences shows resilience and the transformative power of love and support.
My single father showed me strength and stability in my life once I had moved into his house out of my mom's abusive household. His unwavering support and acceptance held a foundation where I could build my self-esteem and sense of self-worth. His belief in my potential, even during the darkest moments, determined me to rise above the challenges and strive for a better future.
Moving out of my mother's abusive household allowed me to explore myself and grow. It was a journey of self-discovery and embracing my uniqueness as a trans and pansexual individual. Recognizing the importance of self-acceptance and understanding, I became increasingly passionate about caring for my and others' mental well-being.
Having experienced the effects of an abusive environment, I became acutely aware of the significance of mental health. Mental well-being is a fundamental aspect of a person's overall health and life, yet, it is often overlooked and frowned upon to receive mental health care.
Motivated by my own experiences, I aspired to become a clinical psychologist. Using my education and motivation, I plan on making an impact on the world. I plan on making the world a better place by striving to make mental health more accessible and destigmatizing the concept of seeking help. I believe that by providing accessible mental health services, fostering empathy, and educating communities about the importance of mental well-being, we can create a society that is more comfortable with the concept of seeking and receiving mental health support and supporting each other.
As an LGBT child of a single father who navigated the treacherous waters of an abusive household, I have emerged with a steadfast determination to create positive change in the field of mental health. Through my own experiences, I have learned that love, acceptance, and support are invaluable resources for overcoming adversity and fostering personal growth. As I embark on my journey to become a clinical psychologist, I aspire to make mental health more accessible to all individuals, regardless of their background or identity, and to cultivate a society that embraces the idea of mental well-being.

I used to get questioned, "Is she your mom?" rather frequently. When we went to school activities, the supermarket, or anywhere else, I had to respectfully decline every time. I would never want to go somewhere without her, especially when it included school or myself. My aunt is a great woman who was always there for me, and who always encouraged and supported me.
After leaving my mom's house, I spent a few years living with my aunt and dad. Due to the closeness of my family, my aunt moved in with my father when he acquired my brother and me. My dad was at work, so my aunt moved in to take care of us. My aunt fed us, tutored us, drove us to school, and did much more. She gave me the motivation I needed to pursue my goals when no one else would, and because of her, I am working hard to get the greatest grades I can so I may attend college and become a clinical psychologist.
My aunt helped me out with all of my interests and taught me all she knew about things like baking, cooking, art, and whatever else I showed an interest in. I won a local cupcake competition two years in a row with her by my side thanks to her support, time, love, and dedication to helping me achieve my goals.
She was understanding when I started working a part-time job during the summer to pay for the dual credit classes I planned to enroll in once the school year began. Every day, she drove me to work and checked on me to make sure I was feeling well. She reassured me that she would find a way to make everything I wanted to achieve for myself or my schooling happen.
I'm now anxious about the upcoming school year, but I'll preserve my composure and try to maintain decent marks to take advantage of any opportunities. I won't be able to answer that question, which was asked so frequently, in the upcoming academic year.
"Is she your mom?" More than anything else, I will miss hearing that repeated question. As my aunt will no longer be by my side. She began suffering from seizures a year or two ago, one of which she was driving at the time and which resulted in a collision. Everyone had survived, so we moved on with our lives while trying to contact a doctor who could assist my aunt with her seizures. However, most doctors placed us on wait. She had left for a holiday with some members of her family, but I stayed behind to finish up my studies and take crucial exams. We received terrible news the day before their homecoming. My aunt couldn't come home to see us, because she had passed away from a seizure while on the trip. My father, brother and I now live at home, and we try to support one another and get through this.
No matter how long it has been since her death, in the end. She gave me the most encouragement and support throughout my academic and personal journey and that will never change even if ten years pass or more.
Our Destiny Our Future Scholarship
I've always believed in the power of giving back to the community and, have been aspiring to make a positive impact on the world. One way I strive to do this is by volunteering whenever I can. Volunteering allows me to contribute my time and skills toward helping those in need and those who have helped me in dire times.
In my community, there are various causes that I'm passionate about. Whether it's working with my school to help with assistance, donating food, supplies, and time, or lending a hand cleaning the community, I want to be actively involved in making my community a better place whenever I can.
However, my aspirations extend way beyond just volunteering and donating food. I've set my sights on becoming a clinical psychologist. I believe that Mental health is a pressing issue in our society, that is overlooked more often than not. I strongly believe that everyone deserves access to quality mental health assistance. Unfortunately, there is still a significant gap in mental health services being available and people receiving them. Many people decide against seeking the services that they might need for fear of embarrassment, cost, social status, or because others around them are interfering such as parents and more.
By pursuing a career as a clinical psychologist, I aim to address this issue head-on. I want to dedicate my knowledge, expertise, and compassion to making mental health assistance more accessible to those who need it the most and might be afraid to get it or it is out of their cost range. I plan to work in both clinical settings and actively engage with communities to reach individuals who might not have easy access to mental health resources, making the stipulation of receiving it lower or gone and helping those who are struggling financially get the help they might need.
Through my volunteering experiences and eventual career path, I hope to create a ripple effect of positive change. I want to empower individuals to prioritize their mental well-being and to seek help without fear or stigma. By working closely with communities, I aim to raise awareness about mental health issues and encourage others to help their peers in their community.
It's important to remember that even small acts of kindness and volunteering can have a major impact on individuals and communities. By combining my passion for volunteering with my future role as a clinical psychologist, I believe I can contribute to creating a more compassionate and mentally healthy world. I understand I do not always have time to give out as sometimes I have myself to love and focus on but I am never afraid to give a helping hand.
JADED Recovery Scholarship
Drug and alcohol addiction is a terrible thing that affects and even kills people in and out of the United States. Some people rely on it to cope with stressful events, bullying, or mental health issues.
My entire life, I struggled with mental health issues such as PTSD, depression, anxiety, insomnia, and an eating disorder. Growing up in a broken family was not a pleasurable experience. I had moved in with my father, and things began to improve and, my life began to calm down. Despite this, I felt I was still under a lot of stress from needing to see my abuser frequently and from school, despite my best efforts. I had had enough and overdosed in the hope that it would solve all of my problems.
After I was released from the hospital, I realized that I was not the only one dealing with these issues and that it was okay to be in pain and struggle, but that our lives are fragile and precious. I didn't care about school, myself, or much else before I overdosed. However, after my eye-opening experience, I was determined to succeed in school. I wanted to do something beneficial for everyone. I began doing well in school and aspired to earn a master's or Ph.D. in clinical psychology. This is so that I can assist people in identifying their problems and obtaining the necessary assistance before it's too late. My beliefs were influenced because I did not think much about life at first and spent too much time supporting others. I realized that it is possible to work on myself while also helping others. Now I volunteer and attend as many community events as I can for as long as I possibly can. My relationships suffered because no one in my family knew I was struggling or planning to overdose. It was eye-opening for them to see how much I struggled due to my mental health and the trauma from my mother. When she discovered I was in the hospital, she denied everything, and I no longer see them often.
In the end, my overdose changed my morals to become more self- and community-focused, my relationships with friends and family became stronger when they realized what was going on and I received the proper help I required, and my career aspirations changed from caring less about what I do to dreaming of going to college to pursue a career in psychology.

Everyone is unique, seeking and winning different things and being themselves. Everyone is different, and some people excel at art or school. I, like everyone else, am unique. To say that I am everything I can express in an essay would be inaccurate. An Essay can only tell part of my story.
My name is Jay. Life has been difficult for me because I am a pansexual, trans-man. I've struggled with my identity since I was a child. I ignored it because I grew up in an abusive household. As soon as I left the house, I learned how to start loving myself and healing.
My father and aunt, whom I live with now, and my friends, know I am transgender, but the rest of my family is unaware. Most of them would reject me, which is fine with me. I enjoy spending time with my family because they are sweet people. Although with some engraved morals. I'm not close to my mother's side because she was the abusive parent, and since my parents divorced, I've barely seen my father until I eventually moved in with him to get away from my mother. I live with an autistic younger brother who has also suffered from our mother's abuse.
when I was living with my mother, I was failing school and not trying. I moved in with my father at the end of sixth grade, and I was doing better in school and trying harder in eighth grade. I realized I wanted to be a psychologist. I want to be a psychologist so that I can help others who deal with mental health issues and trauma. During middle school, I worked hard and got 70's and 80's. Now that I'm a sophomore, I'm getting 90s and 100s. I still want to be a psychologist because I wanna help people who need it.
At school, I try to help out as much as possible. My school is a charter; it's frequently in financial difficulty. Although, it manages to stay open and offers a variety of opportunities such as community service, tutoring, and more. I always try to participate in events and volunteer.
Despite my difficulties, things have improved, as have I. I've accomplished a lot. Some personal achievements include improving my coping, sleeping, and eating habits. I'm also proud of some of my hobbies, I've earned 100$+ in selling artwork, won a baking competition, and more. I am very proud of myself for getting all A's in school and improving my communication skills.
I hope to be able to contribute more to my community and help others. I want to improve my art and cooking, so I can get even better, as I believe I have potential. My professional ambition is to attend Texas State University to study clinical psychology. After I finish college, I hope to enter the workforce and assist people in identifying what they are struggling with and receiving the proper care they deserve.
Finally, I believe I am a good candidate for the Adam Montes Pride Scholarship because I am committed to growth and am proud of my flaws and progress. My flaws, such as anxiety, trauma, being LGBT, depression, and what else the people around me consider flaws, are a part of who I am, and I would not change a thing because otherwise, I would not be who I am right now. Who I am right now is why I work so hard toward my goal, and nothing will stop me from achieving it. I would appreciate the assistance of those around me in achieving it.
