Good Vibes Only Scholarship in Memory of C. Spoon
My name is Jayla Moore, and I am a freshman at Texas Woman's University, majoring in psychology. I have chosen to study psychology because I have always been fascinated by the human mind and how it shapes our behavior. More importantly, I want to help people, especially those in underrepresented communities like mine, to better understand and improve their mental health.
Growing up as a Black woman, I have seen firsthand how mental health issues can be misunderstood or overlooked in BIPOC communities. There is often a stigma surrounding mental health, especially among people of color, and many individuals feel isolated or ashamed when seeking help. As a result, mental health issues are sometimes dismissed, which only exacerbates the struggles of those affected. My personal experiences, and those of my family and friends, have motivated me to pursue a career where I can advocate for mental health awareness and provide culturally competent care. I want to ensure that people, particularly in underserved communities, have access to resources that will help them thrive, both mentally and emotionally.
Mental health services can greatly benefit BIPOC individuals by addressing the unique challenges they face, such as the effects of systemic racism, discrimination, and economic disparities. These factors can deeply impact an individual's well-being, often leading to conditions like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. By offering compassionate and culturally aware support, mental health professionals can empower individuals to cope with these challenges and reclaim their sense of agency. I believe that understanding the intersection of cultural, social, and psychological factors is crucial to providing effective care. In my future practice, I aspire to foster healing through a holistic approach, where clients are not only treated for their symptoms but are also understood within the context of their identities and lived experiences.
I am committed to using my education to make a tangible difference in the lives of others. With a degree in psychology, I plan to advocate for better mental health resources in BIPOC communities and work towards dismantling the barriers—whether they are economic, cultural, or systemic—that prevent individuals from seeking help. Ultimately, I envision a future where mental health services are universally accessible and free of judgment, where everyone, regardless of background, can get the care they deserve.
Receiving the Good Vibes Only Scholarship in Memory of C. Spoon would be an incredible opportunity for me. It would not only alleviate some of the financial burdens I face but also allow me to dedicate myself more fully to my studies and my long-term goals of becoming a clinical psychologist. As the first person in my family to attend college, this scholarship would be a tremendous support to me and my mother, who has worked tirelessly to provide for our family. I am incredibly grateful for your consideration and hopeful for the chance to contribute positively to the field of psychology, as well as to the communities that need it most.
