Scholarship Essay – Jayla Bryant
St. Louis Community College | Dental Hygiene Program (Fall 2025)
Becoming a dental hygienist has never just been a career goal for me it’s been a calling. My name is Jayla Bryant, and I’ve worked tirelessly to earn my seat in St. Louis Community College’s competitive dental hygiene program, where I will begin in Fall 2025. For the past two years, I’ve remained on the waitlist, watching others move forward while holding onto the dream that my time would come. And it finally has.
During that waiting period, I didn’t give up I leaned in. I became a dental assistant to better understand the field and prepare myself for the rigorous journey ahead. Every patient I supported, every tool I learned to use, and every sterilization process I performed reminded me why I belonged in this profession. I’ve realized that dental care is not just clinical work it’s heart work. It’s about building trust, restoring confidence, and educating underserved communities like the one I come from.
As a first-generation college student, I didn’t have the privilege of mentors or resources to guide me through the molds of higher education. I had to figure it out on my own, piece by piece. There were no college-prep talks at home, no financial aid counselors in the family just me, my ambition, and a belief that I could break generational cycles through education. That meant teaching myself how to budget, how to apply for scholarships, how to navigate long waitlists, and how to advocate for myself in unfamiliar systems.
Financially, the journey hasn’t been easy. The costs of tuition, instruments, textbooks, and everyday living quickly add up. But I’ve never let that stop me. I work while going to school and assist in dental offices to gain experience and stay afloat. This scholarship would not only ease the financial burden, but it would affirm that my efforts, sacrifices, and perseverance matter.
I am committed to giving back to the communities that raised me places where dental health is often overlooked due to financial or systemic barriers. I want to educate, prevent, and serve with both skill and compassion. By supporting me, you’re not just helping one student, you're investing in a ripple effect that will reach countless lives.
Thank you for considering my story and believing in students like me who continue to fight for their dreams, no matter the obstacles.
