Throughout my life's journey, I have faced numerous challenges and adversities, including growing up in a toxic household, experiencing homelessness, and lacking the presence of a father figure. However, through it all, I have found solace and strength in my faith in Jesus Christ. His unwavering love and protection have been constants in my life, guiding me through the darkest of times and inspiring me to pursue a path of service to others. As I reflect on my experiences and the transformative power of faith, I am compelled to dedicate my life to serving as a pastor and leading others toward Jesus Christ. This calling stems from a deep sense of gratitude and a desire to repay the grace and mercy that I have received. By sharing my story and journey of faith, I aim to inspire hope and provide support to those who may be struggling with similar challenges. As a pastor, my primary goal will be to create a welcoming and inclusive community where individuals from all walks of life can come together to worship, learn, and grow in their relationship with God. I envision a church that serves as a beacon of light and hope in the midst of darkness, offering guidance, encouragement, and practical assistance to those in need. One of the ways in which I hope to positively impact others is by providing pastoral care and support to individuals who are facing difficult circumstances. Whether it's providing meals to the homeless, offering financial assistance to struggling families, or organizing educational and vocational programs, I believe that the church has a vital role to play in meeting the needs of the most vulnerable members of society. Ultimately, my desire to become a pastor is rooted in a deep sense of gratitude for God's love and protection in my own life. Building a Better World Scholarship
The origin of my passion for helping the less fortunate in my surrounding community began when neither of my parents graduated high school, my father dropped out of school and my mother as well but later went back to school to receive her GED. With this in mind, my mother struggled greatly to raise three children on her own without an education after high school. Consequently, being a single mother of three living in Southern California was more than difficult and led to me and my family eventually becoming homeless and living in homeless shelters. Also, the absence of a male figure left a huge gap in the father figure's role in the household. Recognizing the new responsibilities that had been presented to me to not only be a father figure to my younger siblings but to also be a source of inspiration and hope while being without a place to call home and to let them know that they can achieve all of their goals and dreams, I pushed through a great number of obstacles not only for myself but also for my younger siblings. Now, through this time my mom stressed the importance for me and my siblings to always be faithful to God and constantly seek His face through reading His word and prayer. While reading the word of God I found, in the words of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the two most important commandments "Love your God with all your mind, soul, and strength and Love your neighbor as you love yourself". I was captivated when I read these words and I discovered that I have been through these things I have been for a reason, having to step up to support my mother and be the leader and example my siblings needed, being homeless, being self-supportive, all these things were to lead me to the man of God I was ultimately supposed to become. I have chosen from that day to give my life to Christ and do His work, and that would consist of pursuing a career of pastoring. But, while I'm a pastor I am going to make it a point to reach out to people who don't have the resources, support, and stability in their lives like I once did before I met Jesus. Jesus said before ascending to heaven to make disciples of all the corners of the earth which is exactly what I am compelled to do. I will use my gift to share the good news with people who need a glimmer of hope and will be someone to be there for them in times of necessity. I'm grateful for all the hardship and struggle I've been through because I know God will place me into someone's life that needs to hear my testimony and will be impowered by it.
Janean D. Watkins Overcoming Adversity Scholarship
My name is Jaydon Walker and I live with my mom and two younger siblings. For starters, neither of my parents were high school graduates, my father dropped out of school and my mother to well but later went back to school to receive her GED. With this in mind, my mother struggled greatly to raise three children on her own without an education after high school. Consequently, being a single mother of three leaves a huge gap in the father figure role in the household. This is where I have had to step up to support my mother and be the leader and example my siblings need. As soon as I hit the age that I gained a conscious awareness of the need for a role model in my abode, I decided to go above and beyond for the sake of my family. Recognizing the new responsibilities that had been presented to me, I pushed through a great number of obstacles not only for myself but also for my younger siblings to have a source of inspiration and hope to know that they can achieve all of their goals and dreams. These are the very reasons why I want to achieve a higher education: to take advantage of the opportunities that my parents never had, to provide the best possible example for my siblings, and to fulfill the great potential that has been spoken over my life by God. I believe that I have well prepared myself for this lone college journey. I have challenged myself throughout my life with the handicap of having no prior knowledge of the after-high school education experience and gave my all in the hopes that I could put my family and me in a better, more comfortable position. Growing up I was placed in multiple situations where I would have to find a way and be my own support system and I believe that ability that I have gained over the years will help me to seamlessly transition into the college lifestyle. I know how it is to be independent and really on yourself to get difficult tasks that are presented to you in an effective and efficient manner. I am ultimately grateful for all that I have been through in this life so far because it has shaped and formed me into the man of God that I am today. My drive to receive a higher education is directly from my love for my family and my personal will to be the best I can be.

My name is Jaydon Walker and I lived with my mom and two younger siblings all my life. Neither of my parents were high school graduates which translated to my mother struggling greatly to raise three children on her own without an education after high school. Consequently, being a single mother of three leaves a huge gap in the father figure role in the household. This is where, as the oldest, I have had to step up to support my mother and be the leader and example my siblings need. As soon as I hit the age that I gained a conscious awareness of the need for a role model in my abode, I decided to go above and beyond for the sake of my family. But consequently, being a single mother of three living in Southern California was more than difficult and led to me and my family eventually becoming homeless and living in homeless shelters. I have chosen from that day to give my life to Christ and do His work, and that would consist of pursuing a career of pastoring. How ironic that in my lowest moment in life, God decided to reveal Himself and His divine purpose for my life to me. I'm grateful for all the hardship and struggle I've been through because I know God will place me into someone's life that needs to hear my testimony and will be impowered by it.

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" stands as a cinematic touchstone in my life as a young black man in America, facing the trials of growing up without the compass of a father figure to guide me. The resonance between Miles Morales' journey and my own struggle for direction is undeniable. In a narrative beautifully crafted by the animation's genius, Miles, like myself, navigates the daunting terrain of self-discovery without the presence of an elder Spider-Man to illuminate the path. The film's brilliance lies not only in its dazzling visuals but in its ability to articulate the complexities of heroism and identity in a way that felt both authentic and empowering. Miles Morales transcends the realm of fiction; he becomes a living reflection of the challenges I grapple with daily. His quest to define his identity, shoulder responsibilities, and ultimately embrace his uniqueness mirrors my personal odyssey. The film becomes a mirror, reflecting not only the struggles but also the resilience embedded in the journey of self-discovery. It's a reminder that heroes can emerge from the depths of personal turmoil, and strength is often found in the process of overcoming adversity. The celebration of diversity and inclusion within the film serves as a validation of my experiences, affirming that my narrative, like Miles', is an essential thread in the rich tapestry of human stories. It instills a profound sense of pride in my heritage, showcasing the beauty of Afro-Latino representation on a mainstream platform. This celebration becomes a source of inspiration, encouraging me to embrace the fullness of my cultural identity and contribute to the mosaic of voices that shape our collective narrative. "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" not only captivates with its visually stunning animation but also transcends the confines of traditional superhero storytelling. It becomes a guiding light in the labyrinth of manhood, offering insights into the complexities of self-acceptance. The narrative becomes a roadmap, illustrating that, despite the absence of a traditional mentor, one can navigate the intricacies of life with resilience and authenticity. In a society where representation matters, this film emerges as a powerful testament to the transformative impact of seeing oneself reflected on the big screen, providing not just entertainment but a profound sense of belonging and purpose. It transforms a movie into a transformative experience, shaping not only the way I view heroes but also influencing how I perceive the hero within myself. Thank you for your consideration.
