I am a 17-year-old senior in high school interested in starting a career in HVAC. I plan to apply to Universal Technical Institute to learn the skills I need to succeed in this trade. I’m also working to find scholarships to help cover the cost of school. Right now, I balance school, work, and preparing for my future.
Last year, my class was assigned a group project about sustainable energy. At first, it was clear that no one knew where to start or what to do. Everyone was talking over each other, and we couldn’t agree on a plan. I realized that if someone didn’t step up, we wouldn’t get anything done. So, I decided to take the lead. I suggested we split the work based on everyone’s strengths. One person, who was good at research, focused on finding facts and data. Another person, who had a talent for design, worked on creating the slides. I made sure all the pieces fit together and took on a role in the final presentation to tie everything into a clear and organized delivery.
Even with this plan in place, things didn’t go perfectly. One of my teammates fell behind on their part of the project because they were struggling to stay organized. At first, I was frustrated because their delay was holding us back, and the deadline was quickly approaching. Instead of getting upset, I decided to take a different approach. I sat down with them to understand what was going wrong and helped them break their work into smaller, manageable steps. I also asked the rest of the team to pitch in and support them. By working together and staying calm under pressure, we were able to complete the project on time.
In the end, our presentation turned out great, and we earned a good grade. However, looking back, I realized there was room for improvement. I could have checked in with my teammates earlier to make sure everyone was on track. By catching potential problems sooner, we could have avoided the last-minute stress.
This experience taught me a lot about leadership and teamwork. I learned how important it is to communicate clearly, adapt to challenges, and support others when they need help. These skills will be important in my future career, where working as part of a team and staying focused under pressure will be essential for success.

I am a dedicated and hardworking individual with a passion for working with my hands and solving problems. From a young age, I enjoyed helping around the house, whether it was fixing small issues or assisting with home projects. This hands-on experience sparked my interest in pursuing a trade, and after exploring different options, I decided on HVAC. HVAC is the perfect field for me because it allows me to combine practical problem-solving skills with the opportunity to make a real difference in people’s lives by improving their comfort and safety.
Throughout my life, I’ve always looked for ways to help others. Whether it’s assisting classmates with school projects, lending a hand to friends, or volunteering, I believe in the importance of collaboration and supporting those around me. One of the main reasons I’m drawn to HVAC is that it’s a career that directly impacts people’s well-being. Whether it’s ensuring a family stays warm during the winter or keeping a business comfortable in the summer, I find fulfillment in knowing that my work can make a positive difference in someone’s life.
Once I complete my training, I plan to use my HVAC skills to help people in my community. I understand that many families and individuals rely on their heating and cooling systems to maintain a safe and comfortable living environment. I want to make these services accessible and affordable for everyone, especially during times of extreme weather when people need these systems the most. Whether it’s installing a new system, making repairs, or providing regular maintenance, I want to ensure people have reliable service when they need it.
In addition to providing these essential services, I want to use HVAC as a way to promote sustainability. The industry is moving toward energy-efficient and environmentally friendly systems, and I am excited about the opportunity to be a part of this change. I plan to stay updated with new technologies and green solutions so that I can help customers reduce their environmental impact and lower their energy bills. By offering energy-efficient options, I can make a difference in both people’s lives and the world around us.
I also look forward to giving back to the industry by mentoring others who are new to HVAC. I know how valuable it is to have someone to turn to for advice, whether you’re just starting out or facing a tough problem on the job. As I gain experience, I want to pass on the knowledge I’ve learned and help others grow in their careers. Sharing my experiences and helping someone else succeed in HVAC will be another way for me to make a positive impact.
Ultimately, I plan to build a successful career in HVAC that allows me to use my skills to help others. I want to work in a field where I can solve problems, improve people’s lives, and continue learning and growing. Through my work, I aim to make a difference in my community and contribute to making homes and businesses more energy-efficient, safer, and more comfortable for everyone.
Russell Koci Skilled Trade Scholarship
I am planning to study HVAC because it aligns with my skills, interests, and my desire to have a career where I can make a tangible difference. Ever since I was young, I’ve enjoyed working with my hands, whether it was helping my family with home repairs or figuring out how things worked. As I got older, I realized that HVAC is a perfect fit for me. It combines my problem-solving abilities with my interest in technology. The idea of diagnosing issues with heating or cooling systems and repairing them excites me. HVAC professionals not only help people by creating comfortable living environments, but they also improve the safety of homes and businesses by ensuring systems work properly. The impact of this work makes the field even more appealing to me.
I’ve always been drawn to careers where I can be hands-on and make a direct impact. HVAC fits this perfectly because it is not just about fixing problems, but also about helping people, especially in extreme weather conditions. There are many people who rely on these systems to keep their homes comfortable, and I find it fulfilling to know that I can provide that service. Whether it’s repairing a broken heater in the dead of winter or installing an efficient cooling system for the summer, knowing that my work can directly improve someone’s quality of life motivates me to pursue this field.
I am confident that I will be successful in the HVAC field because of my strong work ethic, dedication to learning, and problem-solving mindset. I have always enjoyed challenges, and HVAC is a field that is constantly evolving, requiring both creativity and practical knowledge. I know that I’ll be able to handle the technical side of the trade and enjoy the learning process. I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty, and I take pride in doing my work well. In addition, I have experience with small repairs and troubleshooting, which has given me a foundational understanding of how systems work.
Another reason I’ll be successful is that I’m committed to developing both my technical skills and my ability to work with others. HVAC often requires working in teams, collaborating with others to troubleshoot, install, or maintain systems. I’m a good communicator, and I believe I’ll be able to work well with customers, coworkers, and managers. I also know that learning doesn’t stop after getting my certification, and I’m committed to continually improving my skills through ongoing education and hands-on experience.
A successful life, to me, is about finding balance and purpose. It’s not only about achieving professional success but also about creating strong relationships with family and friends and contributing to the community. Success is living with integrity, working hard, and being proud of the work you do. For me, success will mean building a stable and fulfilling career where I can support myself, continue learning, and enjoy the rewards of my hard work. It will also mean making a positive impact on the people around me, whether it’s through my work, by helping someone with their HVAC needs, or by mentoring someone else who’s new to the trade.
I believe I will be successful because I have a clear vision of what I want to accomplish. I’m dedicated to my goals, and I’m committed to working hard to achieve them. Success is a journey, and I’m ready to face any challenges along the way with determination and a positive attitude.
Uniball's Skilled Trades Scholarship
I am pursuing a career in HVAC because it matches my skills and interests. I’ve always enjoyed working with my hands and figuring out how things work. Growing up, I liked helping my family with repairs around the house and learning how systems function. HVAC is a career where I can use these skills to solve problems and help people. It feels good to know that fixing or installing a system can make someone’s home more comfortable or even safer, especially in extreme weather.
What excites me most about HVAC is that no two days are the same. Each job comes with its own challenges, whether it’s diagnosing a broken system or installing something new. I also like that HVAC professionals play an important role in people’s daily lives. Everyone needs heating and cooling, and being able to provide that service makes the work feel meaningful.
Another thing I like about this trade is the chance to keep growing. HVAC technology is always changing, with more energy-efficient systems and smart technology being introduced. I’m excited to learn about these advancements so I can stay up-to-date in the field and bring the best solutions to my future customers.
After finishing my trade education, I plan to work for a strong HVAC company where I can grow my skills and gain experience. I want to become a top-level technician who can handle both routine maintenance and complex repairs. My goal is to earn additional certifications, like in energy-efficient systems or advanced troubleshooting, so I can specialize and stand out in the field.
One of the hardest challenges I faced was during my junior year of high school when I fractured my collarbone playing football. Football has always been a big part of my life, and I loved being on the field with my teammates. When I got injured, it was tough knowing I wouldn’t be able to play for the rest of the season. It felt like I was letting my team down, and I struggled with sitting on the sidelines instead of contributing.
At first, it was frustrating to watch practices and games, knowing I couldn’t be out there with my team. I spent a lot of time feeling down, thinking about all the things I was missing out on. But instead of letting the situation get the best of me, I decided to stay involved in other ways. I helped my teammates during practices by offering advice or helping with drills. I stayed positive at the games, cheering them on and encouraging them to keep pushing forward. I realized that even though I couldn’t be on the field physically, I could still support my team in other ways.
During this time, I also focused on my recovery. I followed my doctor’s instructions carefully, and staying dedicated to getting back to full strength. It wasn’t easy, and there were days when I felt frustrated by how slow the recovery process was. But I kept my focus on the goal of returning to the field, and that motivation helped me push through.
The lessons I learned during my injury will stay with me as I continue my journey in HVAC. Whether it’s during my training or in my future career, I know that obstacles will come my way. But I’ve learned how to stay positive, keep working hard, and adapt when things don’t go as planned. These lessons will help me build a successful career and overcome any challenges I face in the future.

future, whether it’s in my career, my personal life, or in any leadership roles I take on in my community.
Resilience is perhaps the most important lesson football has taught me. Like many athletes, I’ve faced setbacks. I’ve had injuries that took me off the field, games where I made mistakes that cost us points, and moments of frustration where things didn’t go as planned. But football has shown me that setbacks are just a part of the journey. It’s not about how many times you fall; it’s about how many times you get back up. I’ve learned to embrace failure as an opportunity to grow, whether that means coming back stronger after an injury or analyzing what went wrong in a game to improve for the next one. This resilience has helped me overcome challenges in other areas of my life as well. When things get tough, I remind myself that persistence and a positive attitude can get me through anything.
My athletic journey has not only shaped me but has also prepared me to make an impact on others. One of the ways I aim to do this is by being a role model to younger athletes, both on my team and in the community. As a senior, I’ve made it a priority to mentor the younger players, offering advice, encouragement, and guidance. I remember how much it meant to me when upperclassmen took the time to help me when I was starting out, so I want to pay that forward. I hope to inspire them to work hard, stay disciplined, and believe in themselves, just as I’ve learned to do over the years.
Beyond football, I believe I can make an impact by promoting the values that the sport has taught me in other aspects of life. Whether it’s through volunteering, helping others set and achieve their goals, or simply being a supportive friend, I know that the lessons I’ve learned on the field apply to life in general. I want to encourage others to adopt a resilient mindset, embrace teamwork, and develop the discipline needed to pursue their dreams, no matter the obstacles they face.
In the future, I see myself using the leadership, teamwork, and resilience I’ve gained from football to contribute to my community in meaningful ways. Whether through coaching younger players, getting involved in community service, or simply being a positive example for others, I am committed to making a difference. Football has shown me that success is not just about individual achievement; it’s about lifting others up and helping them reach their potential.
In conclusion, my athletic journey has had a profound impact on my life, shaping me into a disciplined, resilient, and team-oriented person. The lessons I’ve learned on the field have prepared me to make a positive impact on others, both within my team and beyond. I am grateful for everything football has taught me, and I look forward to carrying these values with me as I pursue my future goals and continue to make a difference in the lives of others.
LeBron James Fan Scholarship
The first time I watched LeBron James play, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. It was the 2016 NBA Finals, and I saw him lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to an amazing comeback against the Golden State Warriors. His determination, skill, and leadership on the court blew me away. From that moment, I became a fan—not just of how he plays, but of who he is as a person.
LeBron James isn’t just a basketball player, he’s a role model. He works incredibly hard, not just in games, but also in his training and how he helps his teammates. Off the court, he’s just as impressive. I really admire how he uses his fame to speak out on important issues and give back to the community, like when he opened the I PROMISE School in his hometown. LeBron shows that being great isn’t just about what you do in sports, but also about what you do for others.
Now, when people ask if LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all time, it’s a tough question. Michael Jordan is often seen as the best because of his six championships and huge impact on basketball. But I think LeBron has a strong case. He can do it all—score, pass, rebound, and play defense. He’s been great at every position on the court and has a smart basketball mind that sets him apart.
What really stands out about LeBron is his consistency. He’s been one of the best players in the NBA for over 20 years, which is incredible. Even as he gets older, he still competes at the highest level, which shows how hard he works and how much he loves the game. This long-lasting greatness makes him one of the most remarkable athletes ever.
The debate about who is the greatest might go on forever, but LeBron’s achievements, both in basketball and in life, make him a strong contender. Whether or not he’s the greatest, there’s no doubt that LeBron James has made a huge impact on the game and inspired millions of people, including me.
In the end, I’m a fan of LeBron James because of his amazing talent and the kind of person he is. He’s more than just a player; he’s someone who uses his success to make the world better. Whether he’s the greatest player ever or not, LeBron’s legacy will be felt for a long time, and that’s what makes him truly special.
Track to the Trades
WinnerWhen I was younger, I remember sitting in my living room on a hot day, enjoying the cool air from our air conditioner. I asked my dad how it worked, and he explained the basics of HVAC systems. That conversation sparked my interest in HVAC, and over the years, my passion for this field has only grown.
Trades like HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work are the backbone of modern society. Without these essential services, our daily lives would be much more difficult and less comfortable. When you turn on the tap, expect clean water; when you flip a switch, expect the lights to turn on. HVAC technicians, plumbers, and electricians ensure these everyday conveniences are possible. In extreme weather, HVAC systems keep us safe and comfortable, while in places like hospitals, they play a crucial role in patient care. Plumbers ensure our water is clean and safe, preventing disease and promoting public health. Electricians power our homes, schools, and businesses, making it possible for us to live and work in the modern world.
As a high school student, my main goal is to become a skilled HVAC technician. I’m drawn to this trade because it’s challenging and plays an important role in maintaining the comfort and safety of homes and businesses. I want to learn everything about HVAC, from the basics to advanced techniques. My dream is not just to fix problems but to find better, more efficient solutions, especially when it comes to saving energy and protecting the environment.
This scholarship will help me achieve my goals by easing the financial burden of education and training. My family has had to be careful with money, and while I’m determined to pursue this career, the cost of school, sports, and training is a lot to handle. With this scholarship, I can focus on learning and gaining the skills I need without worrying so much about money.
I also believe in the values of generosity, respect, innovation, and teamwork. To me, generosity means sharing what I learn with others, whether it’s helping a classmate or a customer. Respect means appreciating the knowledge of experienced technicians and taking good care of the tools and equipment I use. Innovation is about always looking for better ways to do things, and teamwork is about working well with others to achieve our goals together.
In summary, trades like HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work are essential to modern society. My goals in the HVAC trade come from a deep passion for the work and a desire to make a difference. This scholarship will not only help me financially but will also support my commitment to becoming a skilled HVAC technician who upholds important values. I’m excited to learn, grow, and one day give back to the community by making sure homes and businesses are comfortable, efficient, and sustainable.
Moreover, by mastering this trade, I hope to inspire others to consider careers in the trades, showing that these fields offer both personal fulfillment and a chance to contribute significantly to society. In an era where technical skills are increasingly valuable, I believe that the HVAC trade is not only a path to a stable and rewarding career but also an opportunity to be part of a vital industry that impacts everyone’s daily life.
