Growing up, I've always felt restrained to be myself. My family was very religious Christians, who just so happened to be Caribbean, and it felt like a recipe for disaster that was set up for my life. Going through depression through middle school, having thoughts of self-harm, and feeling alone, ashamed, and confused as a child took a toll on me. It wasn't until I entered high school that I met a guy who was in a similar situation that I was in. Except he was 'out of the closet'. His family was Christian, he grew up homosexual, and believing in God. He inspired me to be myself and to come out of the closet. Now that I am being out of the closet, I help advocate for other gay guys like myself who are a part of my generation or the next generation. On social media, I help educate people on HIV+, AIDS, and other STDs. How to prevent, or manage such diseases. I help people who come out of the closet who feel they can't due to religious reasons, and I have created an open space and environment for people to feel free to come to me about their mental health and well-being. Making sure that I allow others to feel safe, but heard is something that I strive for, especially since, I never felt heard, and safe growing up.
Being a 12-year-old boy and having thoughts about suicide should not have happened to anybody. Hosting my series of motivational messages, body positivity speeches, sexual orientation talks, and sexually fluid, or sexually positive discussions help bring the LGBTQ community together. Breaking down societal heteronormitve walls that were built within lgbtq+ men that hurt our community rather than benefit each other, is also a part of my advocacy for living gay, healthy, and positive.
As I community I believe that we have to not only point out the issues within our community but fix the issues that are restraining other people from being a part of such a wonderful family. I have fallen victim to hurting the lgbtq+ community but I was able to focus on myself, change my ways, and help advocate for the better. That is all I have ever wanted for the world that we live in. Being LGTBQ+ was something hard for me to admit, but since being out, happy, and honest with myself, I have never felt more comfortable in my skin.
