Carole Willis Criminal Justice Reform Scholarship
In a world g with social injustices, I am driven by a deep passion to address corruption within our prisons, specifically focusing on the terrible issue of sexual violence against incarcerated individuals. My dedication also reaches out to fight for the rights and support of the transgender community. These two interconnected social issues underscore my commitment to creating a more just and inclusive criminal justice system. The issue of corruption within prisons, particularly the alarming rates of sexual assault against prisoners, needs not only mine but everyones attention. It is a silent epidemic that often goes unnoticed, which creates a cycle of trauma and injustice. My approach to tackling this problem involves a strategy that is rooted in advocacy, awareness, and policy reform. To start off with, I am actively engaging in advocacy initiatives to shed light on the dark corners of corruption within prison systems. I collaborate with different organizations on campus that are dedicated to prison reform. This helps me utilize my voice and helps bring awareness about the systemic issues that enable and perpetuate sexual violence. By sharing different survivor stories and help get those stories and voices out there into the public, I want to dismantle the walls of silence that surround this issue. I am also committed to working towards policy reform that addresses the root causes of corruption in prisons. This includes speaking for stronger regulations, oversight mechanisms, and accountability measures within prisons. I have partnered with local legal teams, and organizations, I want to be able to contribute to the creation of a prison system that prioritizes the safety and dignity of every individual. In my pursuit of justice, I have recognized that all social issues are interconnected. As a bi-racial transgender male, I am dedicated to supporting and advocating for the rights of transgender individuals who often face challenges within the criminal justice system. Transphobia, discrimination, and lack of proper support contribute to an environment where transgender individuals, especially those in prison, are vulnerable to violence. To address this social issue, I actively engage with LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and try to learn how I can help. I participate in many different workshops, seminars, and awareness campaigns, which help me understand the issue better. This makes me want to create a society that is more inclusive and where the rights of transgender people are respected and protected. I have a commitment to addressing corruption in prisons and supporting the rights of transgender individuals within the criminal justice system. This is an important part of my contribution to social justice. Through community engagement, police reform and advocacy, I want to make a lasting impact. By tackling these interconnected issues, I aim to create a more compassionate and equal society where every individual, regardless of their background, can live free from any discrimination and violence.

As someone who is both Hispanic and Black, as well as gay and trans, my path to self-discovery has been one of strength and determination. Currently, I'm pursuing a major in criminal justice with a focus on forensics and a minor in psychology. Lauren Czebatul Scholarship
I understood the value of giving back to my community from the start of my high school career. I have learned about the transformational impact of service via a variety of volunteer experiences, including blood donation, organizing blood drives, working at the school greenhouse during plant sales, and devoting my Thursdays to volunteering at the neighborhood farmers market. These encounters have not only altered my perspective but also strengthened my resolve to have a positive influence on the world. I may continue my journey of service while achieving my academic objectives with the help of the scholarship. In altering my outlook on life and the importance of service, volunteering has been a major factor. Through my participation in blood donation drives, I saw the potentially life-saving effects of just one gift of blood. These events made me understand the value of empathy and how it may have a good effect on other people's lives. In addition to improving the community's health, organizing blood drives allowed me to gain crucial leadership and organizational skills. I got to see the beauty of promoting life and growth while working at the school's greenhouse during plant sales. I learned patience, responsibility, and the value of environmental sustainability from this experience. Additionally, through helping at the neighborhood farmers market, I was able to assist regional farmers and businesses while simultaneously developing my knowledge of the value of sustainable agriculture and ties to the community. Not only has volunteering enlarged my perspective, but it has also enabled me to acquire important skills. I have developed effective communication skills, teamwork, and the capacity to adapt to a variety of contexts as a result of my participation in these activities. Working well with people from different backgrounds has taught me how to cultivate a profound regard for and appreciate for varied viewpoints. My ambition to make a difference in the world and my lifetime dedication to service have both been shaped by these experiences. I currently have severe financial limitations that make pursuing a higher degree difficult. I've taken on the duty of working multiple jobs over the summer and the course of the academic year in order to get over these challenges. I put in a lot of effort as a lifeguard in the summer, protecting neighborhood residents at the YMCA and my local recreation department. These jobs have given me invaluable experience, but they have also helped me understand the value of responsibility and commitment. I work a third job in a family-owned fudge factory throughout the school year in addition to my summer duties. In order to lessen the financial difficulties related to my education, I willingly accept the ongoing challenge of juggling work obligations with academic demands. However, my ability to devote time and attention to my education, extracurricular activities, and community service has been substantially hampered by my hectic schedule and the necessity to make financial contributions. I have learned the power of service to impact people and communities via my experiences volunteering. These events have changed the way I think and given me a strong feeling of empathy, compassion, and purpose. With the aid of this scholarship's financial support, I will be able to finish my studies, learn more, and help my community even more. I am appreciative of the chance to be considered for this scholarship, and I promise to use it as a launchpad for further development, volunteerism, and global good.

This shift in mindset will foster a society that is truly invested in the welfare of all its members, thereby promoting inclusivity and social cohesion. Society's response to the disadvantaged must prioritize equality as a fundamental principle. Equality should not be confined to legal rights and formal equality but extended to encompass equitable opportunities, access to resources, and social justice. Embracing this broader understanding of equality requires systemic changes, such as reforming education, healthcare, and employment sectors. By addressing the root causes of inequality and dismantling discriminatory structures, society can create a level playing field that allows the disadvantaged to thrive. Additionally, prioritizing equality ensures that marginalized voices are heard, promoting diversity and fostering a more vibrant and inclusive society. To truly address the problems faced by the disadvantaged, society must shift from short-term, band-aid solutions to long-term, sustainable strategies. This requires investing in preventive measures, early interventions, and holistic approaches that address the underlying factors contributing to disadvantage. By proactively allocating resources to education, healthcare, affordable housing, and employment opportunities, society can break the cycle of intergenerational poverty and marginalization. Sustainable solutions not only empower individuals to improve their own lives but also contribute to the overall social and economic well-being of communities. By embracing this transformation, society can create a future where everyone has an equal chance to succeed. In conclusion, the evolving nature of society demands a change in our response to the problems faced by the disadvantaged. By cultivating empathy, prioritizing equality, and transitioning to sustainable solutions, we can create a more just and inclusive society. This necessitates recognizing the unique experiences of the marginalized and actively dismantling the systemic barriers that perpetuate inequality. Only through these transformative efforts can we ensure that all individuals, regardless of their background, have equal access to opportunities and resources. By embracing this change, we not only uplift the lives of the disadvantaged but also foster a society that thrives on compassion, understanding, and fairness.
    Gender Expansive & Transgender Scholarship
In a society where inclusivity and acceptance are still evolving, gender-expansive transgender individuals often face unique challenges, including barriers to educational support. This essay aims to explore my personal experiences as a transgender man (FTM) and shed light on the obstacles encountered in my educational journey. Furthermore, it will delve into my major, educational goals, career aspirations, and how I plan to contribute to the LGBTQ+ community after completing my undergraduate degree. As a gender-expansive transgender individual, my journey has been marked by both triumphs and struggles. Throughout my academic years, I faced bullying and discrimination due to my identity. Being singled out by professors further compounded these challenges, making it difficult to focus on my studies. The emotional toll of these experiences cannot be overstated, often hindering my educational progress. The primary barrier I encountered was bullying related to my gender identity. This not only affected my self-esteem but also created a hostile environment that hindered my ability to learn. Additionally, professors singling me out added to the sense of isolation and further impacted my academic performance. These experiences underscore the importance of fostering inclusive educational environments that promote acceptance and provide the necessary support for all students. I am currently pursuing a major in criminal justice and forensics. The field of criminal justice has always intrigued me, and I believe it offers a unique opportunity to bring about positive change. My educational goals involve gaining a comprehensive understanding of the criminal justice system and its inner workings, with a specific focus on forensic investigation and analysis. My ultimate career aspiration is to become a crime scene investigator with a specialization in narcotics. By focusing on this area, I aim to contribute to the efforts against drug-related crimes and help ensure a safer society. Furthermore, I hope to challenge stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding transgender individuals by excelling in my chosen field, thereby inspiring and encouraging others to pursue their passions without fear of discrimination. After completing my undergraduate degree, I am determined to make a lasting impact on the LGBTQ+ community. Firstly, I want to advocate for diverse career options for transgender men, as representation and visibility are crucial in challenging societal norms. By sharing my own experiences and successes, I hope to inspire others to consider careers in law enforcement, demonstrating that individuals from marginalized backgrounds can contribute positively to the field. Additionally, I am eager to work with LGBTQ+ youth, particularly those from communities of color, to foster trust and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and marginalized communities. By promoting dialogue, education, and understanding, I aim to bridge the gap and build stronger relationships, emphasizing that law enforcement is a force for positive change and support. The journey of a gender-expansive transgender individual pursuing education is not without its challenges. However, by sharing our stories and advocating for change, we can create a more inclusive and supportive educational environment for future generations. As I progress through my major in criminal justice and forensics, my ultimate goal is to become a crime scene investigator focused on narcotics. Through my career, I intend to make a significant impact on the LGBTQ+ community by advocating for diverse career options and working towards building trust between law enforcement agencies and marginalized communities. By doing so, I hope to be a catalyst for change and contribute to a more equitable and accepting society.

Gun violence is a pervasive issue that has affected countless individuals and communities across the world. Unfortunately, I have had an indirect experience with gun violence through news reports and stories of friends and family members who have been impacted by it. The devastating effects of gun violence are far-reaching, from physical injuries to emotional trauma and loss of life. While I have not personally experienced direct gun violence, the fear of it looms large in our society. It is difficult to feel safe when mass shootings occur regularly in public places such as schools, churches, and concerts. The prevalence of guns in our culture has created a dangerous environment where anyone can become a victim at any time. It is imperative that we address this issue head-on by implementing stricter gun control laws and promoting responsible gun ownership. We must also prioritize mental health resources for those who may be at risk for committing acts of violence. As a future cop, I plan to bring awareness to gun violence by taking a proactive approach. My first step will be to educate myself on the issue and understand the root causes of gun violence. This will involve attending training sessions, reading up on research studies, and engaging with community members who have been affected by gun violence. Once I have a solid understanding of the issue, I will work with my fellow officers to develop strategies that can help prevent gun violence. This might include increasing patrols in high-crime areas, conducting outreach programs in schools and community centers, and partnering with local organizations that are working to reduce gun violence. In addition to these efforts, I plan to use my position as a cop to raise awareness about the impact of gun violence on our communities. This might involve speaking at public events or using social media platforms to share stories and statistics related to gun violence. Ultimately, my goal is not only to reduce incidents of gun violence but also to create a safer and more peaceful society for all people. Being a part of BSU, LASO, and GSA has been an enriching experience for me. These organizations have provided me with a sense of belonging and community on campus. As a member of BSU, I have been able to connect with other Black students and engage in discussions about our shared experiences. LASO has allowed me to learn more about Latinx culture and connect with people who share a similar background as me. Lastly, GSA has given me the opportunity to support the LGBTQ+ community and find a sense of community and belonging. Through these organizations, I have also been able to participate in various events such as cultural celebrations, educational workshops, and social gatherings. These events have helped me expand my knowledge of different cultures and identities while building relationships with other members. Overall, being a part of BSU, LASO, and GSA has enriched my college experience and allowed me to become more informed and empathetic.

As a child, I always admired the bravery and dedication of police officers. They put their lives on the line every day to protect and serve their communities. As I grew older, my admiration turned into a desire to become one of them. Even though cops do not have a good representation lately, I still want to pursue becoming one. Before I solidified my decision of becoming a cop, I was first a volunteer soccer coach. I became a soccer coach because of my love for the game and my desire to share that passion with others. As a player, I learned the importance of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Coaching allows me to give back to the sport that has given me so much. I enjoy working with little kids and helping them develop their skills both on and off the field. It is rewarding to see them grow as individuals and as players. Even though I was only coaching two to five-year-olds, I still saw so much progress regarding shyness and communication. I even make connections with parents both on and off the field. I made sure that the parents knew me and trusted me enough. Coaching provides an opportunity for me to make a positive impact in my community. Soccer brings people together from all walks of life, and I am proud to be a part of that unity. I want to become a cop because I believe in justice and fairness. I want to make a difference in people's lives by ensuring that they feel safe and secure in their homes and neighborhoods. Being a cop means being able to help those who are vulnerable or in need of assistance. I also want to become a cop so I could make the necessary changes to a racist system. I want to be able to bring back the lost practice of community policing and show POC that there are still cops on their side. I want to become that cop that knows and is friends with everyone in his community. Building a relationship in a community where there is a lack of trust. Being a cop is not just about enforcing the law but also about building community relationships. It is about being approachable, understanding, and empathetic towards people from all walks of life. To make a difference as a cop, I must first understand the importance of building relationships with the people I serve. This means taking the time to get to know the people in your community, listening to their concerns, and working together to find solutions. This is the basic definition of community-oriented policing. It's important for us cops to be visible and approachable in our communities. This means being present at community events, engaging with residents on social media, and being available for questions or concerns. Showing up to a local farmers market, or even a church bbq is one way for us to build a relationship with our community. Making a difference as a cop requires dedication, hard work, and commitment to serving others. In conclusion, becoming a cop is not just my career choice but my calling. It is an opportunity for me to serve my community with honor, integrity, and courage. I am committed to positively impacting society by becoming an officer of the law.

My direct and indirect experience with drug and alcohol addiction has dramatically affected my beliefs. I have seen firsthand the destructive power of addiction on individuals, families, and communities. It has taught me that addiction is a disease that requires compassion, understanding, and support to overcome. My direct experience with addiction came when a close friend struggled with alcoholism. Watching them spiral out of control was heartbreaking, but it also showed me the importance of seeking help and being honest about one's struggles. I have not only seen myself struggle with addiction but also with my friends. I have lost friends to overdoses and watched some friends turn into drug dealers on the street. For myself, I noticed that I started to develop an alcohol addiction. While I am a college student and it is fairly normal for college kids to go out and party, I found myself longing for the taste and effect of alcohol on days I was not out partying. It became a serious issue when my friends started noticing my day drinking after my AM classes. Since then, I put myself into therapy and have been on a dry streak since last November. Indirectly, I have seen the impact of addiction on society through news stories. It has made me realize the need for better education and resources to prevent addiction from taking hold in the first place. Addicts need help to overcome their addiction. They cannot do it alone. Addiction is a complex disease that requires professional treatment and support from loved ones. Without help, addicts are at risk of losing everything they hold dear, their health, relationships, careers, and even their lives. I am a criminal justice major and the subject of addiction is constantly being brought up. It varies but we usually talk about drug addicts or how people see homeless people as drug addicts that are living on the street because of their drug addiction. Overall, my experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of empathy, understanding, and support for those struggling with addiction. It's important to remember that addiction is not a moral failing or lack of willpower; it's a disease that needs medical attention like any other illness. With proper treatment and support from family and friends, addicts can recover from addiction and lead healthy lives free from substance abuse. We must work together as a society to address this issue and provide resources for those in need.

Mental health and relationships are two important aspects of life that are closely intertwined. A person's mental health can greatly affect their ability to form and maintain healthy relationships with others. Likewise, the quality of one's relationships can have a significant impact on their mental well-being. Individuals like myself, who struggle with mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder find it challenging to connect with others or maintain healthy relationships. These conditions can cause isolation, low self-esteem, and difficulty communicating effectively with others. The first signs of depression and anxiety started to show in me when I was fourteen years old. Since I am transgender, I was also suffering from body dysphoria. As a result of my depression, anxiety, and body dysphoria, I began to have less confidence, which affected my platonic and romantic relationships. Since I always kept to myself, I was soon left without friends and my relationship with my parents was in a great deal of turmoil. At that point, I knew I had to get professional assistance as soon as possible. It didn't take long for me to start attending therapy and seeking the help of a psychologist. It was my therapist that helped me cope with the mental illness I had, as well as helped me discover that I was transgender. My therapist also outpatient me to a gender specialist and I am now 6 months on HRT. I was prescribed anti-depressants by my psychologist and I can truly say that that was the best decision I ever made in my life. I am now in college with many friends, an amazing relationship with my parents, and a long-term relationship. Having supportive and positive relationships was very beneficial for my mental health. I had someone to confide in and share experiences which provided a sense of belonging and reduced feelings of loneliness. My parents became extremely supportive of me and have been in my corner cheering me on. My best friend, who is now my boyfriend, has been by my side for a year and has watched me grow into the person I am. While I still suffer from my mental illness, I have found many ways to cope with them. Ever since my initial diagnosis, I have become a mental health advocate for my friends and school. I join in on tabling events at my school and help spread the word about the different mental illnesses and how they do not define you as a person. This has made me think about my career choices. I am a criminal justice and forensics major with a minor in psychology. I have no desire to become a psychologist or a therapist but I do have the desire to work in the Justice system. I currently want to become a crime scene investigator but lately, I have been thinking about going to social work for children. While I won't be able to help the medically, I will be able to help children to get out of bad situations and also give them someone to trust. Mental health affects everyone in some shape or form. Individuals need to prioritize their mental health to build strong and fulfilling relationships. Seeking professional help when needed, practicing self-care, and cultivating healthy communication skills are all essential components for maintaining positive mental health and successful relationships.

Maintaining personal wellness is crucial for students to succeed academically. A healthy body and mind can help students focus better, retain information more effectively, and perform better in exams. Good physical health can also prevent absenteeism and ensure that students are present in class regularly. A balanced diet, regular exercise, and adequate sleep are essential components of personal wellness. Eating nutritious food provides the necessary energy to stay focused during lectures, while exercise helps reduce stress levels and improves cognitive function. Sufficient sleep ensures that the brain is well-rested and ready to absorb new information. When I started college, I was scared that I would be one of those kids that would never show up to class, be a victim to the freshman fifteen, or drop out. After a few months of me getting accustomed to my new life, I started to look for ways to balance not only my school life but also my personal life. I was also trying to find ways to protect my inner peace by focusing on my mental, physical, and emotional health. I started to attend my universities Mindfulness workshops which consisted of a group going for walks or hikes and just being one with ourselves and nature. I found this to be extremely helpful when I started to become stressed and it has improved my mental health. I also started to work out during the weekdays and attended a yoga class during the weekends. Working out has improved my physical health and helped me to develop a healthy diet. Attending yoga classes on the weekdays was a way for me to stretch out my body after a week of heavy lifting but also a way for me to relax my mind. Yoga has improved my mental and physical health. I started to attend therapy to focus on my emotional and mental health. As someone who deals with gender dysphoria, depression, and anxiety, therapy has helped me talk about my feelings and also created a safe space for me when I need it. Maintaining personal wellness helps us college students achieve academic success by improving our physical and mental health. It enables us to stay focused on our studies while also enjoying a balanced lifestyle outside of school. Focusing on your mental, physical, and emotional health can greatly improve your grades and improve your relationship with not only yourself but with other people as well.

STAR Scholarship - Students Taking Alternative Routes
The choice of a career path has always been a difficult one for me. Many times, I found myself facing the dilemma of choosing between becoming a regular patrol cop or an investigator at a crime scene. It was not until I started taking criminal justice courses and forensic courses at my local community college that I was able to finalize my decision. The decision that I made was that I wanted to pursue a career as an investigator at crime scenes. To become a crime scene investigator, I would have to undergo a long training program. Even though I was aware that this career would be filled with challenges, I still decided to pursue it. A crime scene investigator has many jobs. As CSI, I collect and analyze evidence from crime scenes to solve crimes. I would also be required to undergo extensive training in forensic science, law enforcement procedures, and criminal investigation methods. Luckily for me, I am majoring in Criminal Justice and Forensics while also minoring in Psychology. Significant educational background in science is required to work as a CSI, especially in fields like biology, chemistry, and physics. Many CSIs have additional educational backgrounds in forensic science or criminal justice. Unfortunately, the majority of organizations also demand that candidates for CSI positions have several years of law enforcement experience. For a variety of reasons, I don't want to be a police officer, but I am aware that before I can work as a CSI agent, I will likely need to complete the academy and some years of patrol. For me, becoming a patrol officer was a last resort, but I would do anything to become a CSI. After graduation, I intend to attend the Pittsburgh Police Academy. Of course, I intend to attend only if I am not hired as a CSI for a private organization or as a forensic analyst for a local station. In any case, having a backup plan is always a good idea. My backup plan is to become a patrol cop for the city of Pittsburgh. Following that, I hope to advance through the ranks of the station. I understand that life is full of unexpected twists and turns. That is why I have reconsidered my career options. I know deep down that I am destined to be a crime scene investigator, but I also know that in order to open that door, I must first become a patrol cop. I'd have to start somewhere, no matter how much I despised the job.
Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
When I was in high school, my mother walked in on me while I was cutting myself. Soon after that moment, my life seemed to go downhill in an unrelenting downward spiral. There has been a diagnosis of severe depression and social anxiety, as well as an eating disorder. As if one thing after another is happening at the same time and it seems that there is no end in sight. It was not until I became academically motivated and focused that I was able to achieve peace and personal growth through academics. When I first received my initial diagnosis, I began seeing a therapist. It has taken some time to find the right therapist, and I have only just recently found one after going through about 5 different ones. The fact that she has been able to help me with both my mental illness as well as my eating habits has been a great help to me. I have learned new breathing techniques that can help me come back down to earth when I am on the verge of a panic attack and I have also learned how to give positive affirmations not only to myself but also to others as well. Therapy is like my safe space where I feel comfortable talking about anything; with her help, I feel as though nothing is taboo or too embarrassing for me to talk about. I have struggled with depression and anxiety for many years, and the impact it has had on my life has been negative. I struggled with not only friendships but also romantic relationships. I have been told that the stress and trauma I experience as a result of my mental health condition can affect those around me. In simple terms, people do not like being around me. I am always cheerful in social situations, and I try not to let my struggles show. I have learned not to confide in others because I have been told I am needy and should learn to deal with my issues on my own. This leads me to believe that I am unlovable, regardless of the help I get from therapy or medication. As time went on, I began to believe that I would always be alone in this world and that no one would ever love me. The mindset that influenced most of my life changed when I found the sweetest boy on earth. He is currently my boyfriend of one year and I couldn't be more happier to have him in my back corner. He has reassured me, made sure that my mental health is never an issue for him, and taken the initiative to seek professional help for me when I needed it. Ever since he came into my life, I have felt that my life has been on an upward slope. I have been getting even more organized and focused on my health, and I am taking medication for the first time. It was like he is what I needed to become motivated again. Now I know that I am lovable and I am never too needy for anyone. Mental health is a serious issue, and it can have an impact on you, your relationships, and your work. More specifically, your school work. I am in my sophomore year at a four-year university and I am majoring in criminal justice and forensics. During my first semester of college, I was confronted with the challenge of balancing a full-time job, schoolwork, and my mental health. I began focusing solely on work and neglecting my schoolwork, which affected my mental health. This led me to neglect other aspects of my life and caused me to lose sight of what was most important. I began to fall behind in my classes, not attending them and even being threatened by the instructor. That is when I knew that I had to get my act together, and I had to do it fast. During this period, I worked hard to improve my grades and increase my productivity. I also invested time in physical activity and balanced meals because these behaviors helped me feel more confident and less stressed. My mental health also improved during this time as a result of these changes. Mental health is like a rollercoaster ride. You go up and down, sometimes marveling at the view, and sometimes you feel like you're about to fall off the edge. As important as it is to push forward, it can be difficult to know where to go or how to proceed when you are faced with a dilemma. The key is to seek professional help if needed or let someone else help you out if there are other options. Remember that you are not enough for someone and that your mental health isn't the root of all your problems. You are lovable and great.

When I was younger, I was obsessed with marine biology. I was certain that this would be the path for me in life. It wasn't until my sophomore year of high school that things began to change. I enrolled in college classes through dual enrollment. I was unable to take core classes because I did not have enough high school credit hours, but I had enough elective credits to take some elective courses. I had the opportunity to choose from a wide range of options, including automotive, cosmetology, robotics, computer science, nursing, and criminal justice. I was initially uninterested in any of the options, but I was motivated to pursue criminal justice after learning about it. I chose the criminal justice program because of its emphasis on community service, which I thought would be a valuable experience for me in my future career. During my high school career, I took several criminal justice classes as my new elective and even picked up some forensic and psychology classes on the way. I preferred to volunteer only when I was running blood drives or helping out at my local humane shelter on the weekends. I usually found volunteer work to be tedious and unfulfilling. I felt that my contribution to the community was not enough and, even though I knew I was providing a great service, I did not feel satisfied with my performance. I discovered that I wanted to serve the public, no matter how small my contribution may be. Studying criminal justice as an elective, I learned that my future would include public service. Now that I was not interested in becoming a policeman or firefighter, I began thinking about what career path might suit me best. I was looking for a way to give back to the public while pursuing my career in criminal justice, but I did not know how. That is until I attended a career fair and met people who had that same goal. I am a sophomore at the University of North Georgia in pursuit of a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and Forensics, with a minor in Psychology. I am grateful that I decided to take elective courses in high school because those courses provided me with a head start on my college career. I used to be unsure of my career goals after college, but now I know that I want to pursue a job that is forensic-focused. I had the opportunity to attend a career fair one day, and that led me to speak with multiple criminal justice organizations and companies. This experience helped me decide what I wanted to do when I graduated college. I plan to pursue a career in crime scene investigation for either the Federal Bureau of Investigation or the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. While I will not be a public face of my community, I can still help out from the shadows. I will not be found on the side of the road attempting to get someone for speeding, but I will be at a crime scene collecting evidence to make a case against someone. I will help people win their cases, and gain the compensation and justice they deserve.

Every individual has a unique journey that they are on. My philosophy on life is that I have experienced a variety of different journeys and have walked down a variety of different paths throughout my nineteen years of life. There have been times in my life when I battled depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, and thoughts of suicide, and I still do. As I have grown through the years, I have also found myself. As other people would say, I have been in every letter of the LGBTQ+ community at some point in my life. In my middle school and high school years, I identified most of the time as a lesbian, then I was a nonbinary bisexual, and now I identify as a bisexual transgender male. The different experiences that I have had over the years have shaped me into the person that I am today. It felt as though my life had gone downhill in an unrelenting downward spiral after my mom discovered me cutting myself at fourteen years old. In the years since I have gone in and out of therapy. I have been diagnosed with severe depression and social anxiety, and I recently started seeing a psychiatrist about the possibility of me also suffering from an eating disorder and bipolar disorder. This led me to start losing focus in school and my social life. I felt as if I was untreatable and that I would never fit in anywhere. I must admit, I have tried to commit suicide on multiple occasions because of this. I also started to notice myself slipping in school. I was so warped in my head and me wanting to not be here anymore that I started to completely disregard school. This contributed to my self-hatred and self-pity that I just kept digging myself a deeper hole. Fortunately, I found a therapist that eventually gave me the help I needed. She not only helped me with navigating my mental health but also helped navigate my physical well-being. I find myself having fewer panic attacks and I soon became more academically driven. My grades in my classes started to spike up and I also started to become more social with my peers. If it wasn't for her, I do not know where I would be. For a long time, I struggled with not only my sexual identity but also my gender identity. I knew I liked women from a young age, but I also liked men. The issue was that I did not like men and how a woman should like a man but I also soon realized that I did not like women and how a woman should like women. This leads me through a gender and sexuality crisis. In the back of my mind, I knew that I liked both genders, but it felt weird liking them as a woman. That is when the realization hit me. I always hated my feminine body and I wished I was one of the boys. That should've been a clear indicator that I was trans. It has been 4 years since I came out trans and now I am 6 months on testosterone with the possibility of me getting top surgery in the next few months. I have lost many friends along the trans journey but I have equally made just as many friends, even better. Life is like an endless road. Some paths may be curvey and have multiple bumps, but you just have to keep moving forward. If you come to a dead end, turn right back around and follow a different path.

When I was 14 years old, my mom walked in on me cutting myself. In the years following that moment, it felt as though my life had gone downhill in an unrelenting downward spiral. There has been a diagnosis of severe depression and social anxiety, and I have been seeing a psychiatrist recently regarding the possibility that I may be suffering from bipolar disorder and also suffering from an eating disorder. As if one thing after another is happening at the same time, and it seems that there is no end in sight. It was not until I became academically motivated and focused that I was able to achieve peace and personal growth. As soon as I received my initial diagnosis, I began to see a therapist. It has taken me some time to find the right therapist, and I have only just recently found one after going through about 5 different ones. The fact that she has been able to help me with both my mental illness as well as my eating habits has been a great help to me. I have learned new breathing techniques that can help me come back down to earth when I am on the verge of a panic attack and I have also learned how to give positive affirmations not only to myself but to others as well. Therapy is like my safe space and I encourage everyone to at least attempt therapy if they have the means to do so. Being in college can be extremely stressful. Occasionally, I have sat in my dorm thinking that I would like to relapse and I have wished I could but then there is a little voice in my head that tells me not to Succeeding academically is like my motivation. I have realized that when I am doing poorly in my classes, my mental health starts to slip, but when I am ahead in all my classes and passing them, I feel like I am on top of the world. People have different motivations, mines just happen to be academics. I may stress myself out too much and I can be high-strung, but it helps me stay on top of my studies. I am currently in my sophomore year in college and I am majoring in Criminal Justice and Forensics, and I am planning to pursue a minor in psychology. I was constantly worried that I would never be able to do something great in my life or pursue my future career. That was until I devoted myself to my major. I have decided that I was to become a Crime scene investor for either the FBI or GBI. I fell in love with my forensic studies and going on mock crime scenes. Being in CSI is like my way of giving back to the community. It is some way I can indirectly help people, whether that be getting someone the justice they deserve or giving a family closure.

Being a part of the LGBTQ+ community has helped me in so many ways. I learned so much about myself and queer history. While I love the people I have met and the person I've become, that doesn't change the fact that being a part of this community is hard. I have dealt with not only homophobia but also transphobia and racism. The shocking part is that it is not all just from cis heterosexual people but it is mostly from the community itself. I went through many phases when I came out. For years I perceived myself as a masc lesbian, and then nonbinary bisexual and now I am a trans bisexual man. I loved every phase I went through and it has made me the person I am today. I pride myself in being openly trans, especially as a POC trans man. We do not receive a lot of social media attention but I am here to change that. I love seeing POC of trans people and even trying to support any business they start up. I get excited when I see POC trans models on my feed, showing off what they worked so hard to achieve. I strive to be like them. Being a POC and a part of the LGBT community isn't the easiest thing. I deal with microaggressions from people on a daily but it somehow gets worse when I am in LGBT-safe spaces. Maybe it is because some people believe that if they are oppressed for their sexuality then they can not oppress people because of the color of their skin. Many people think like that and it is troubling. As a community, we should accept everyone, no matter their skin color, gender, pronouns, or sexuality. I also deal with casual transphobia on a daily. I would accept some ignorance from heterosexual cis people, but I would have never thought that most of the transphobia I receive is from people in the community. Comments like, "you'll never be a real guy", "why would you want to be a guy, they are terrible", and " Trans for Trans relationships are just straight/lesbian/gay relationships with extra steps". Comments like these leave me baffled. My boyfriend is a trans man as well and we constantly get told we are just lesbians with extra steps, this is very dysphoria-inducing to both of us. Now that I am on hormones and getting surgery soon, I am starting to struggle even more with paying for college and my medication. Unfortunately, my insurance does not cover surgery or medication so I am paying for everything out of pocket. I take out loans out to pay tuition but that is starting to add up. I attempt to put at least 100-300 dollars into my loan after every paycheck but that is slowly leaving me with nothing. I am scared that I will have to decide to either pay for my medication or my loans one day. I am majoring in criminal justice and forensics with a minor in psychology. I want to be a Crime Scene Investigator or a forensic psychologist once I get out of college. I started my criminal justice career back in high school when I started to dual enroll at Savannah Technical College in Georgia. I soon fell in love with the idea of helping people. Even if CSI officers do not get paid well, my only motivation is to help out civilians and get them the justice they deserved.

What makes us truly unique? We live in a world where everyone wants to make a name for themselves but slowly finds themselves falling into trends or looking and acting like the average Joe. I would sit here and lie and say that I am the complete opposite but I am not. I do not go against the grain whatsoever, nor do I wish to make a name for myself. I am just me. I am your average college student that comes from a semi-immigrant background. Just like everyone though, I am unique in my own way. Something that always gets talked about at a social event or a family gathering is my unique character and my hard work ethic. My parents would say my personality is what makes me special. How I light up the room when I walk in or how I can make people laugh just cause I am laughing. People would always say that I am a character and to never stop being me. I try my best to not fall into trends, but sometimes I find it hard not to. Especially when all my social media is filled with the latest fashion trends or music. Beyond that, I still strive to just be myself. I do not like putting on a show for people, even if I have a big following on social media. I love posting about some aspects of my life and sharing them with my followers. I will always be proud of my work ethic. Right, when I turned sixteen, I automatically started looking for jobs, and since then I have never been out of a job. I worked in fast food, as a lifeguard, a coach and now I sell chocolate for some extra income while I am in college. My work ethic also has a big effect on my studies. If you were to ever ask one of my friends what I am doing, they would say that I am working on school work or studying. I sometimes find myself working ahead in all my classes because I get into academic zones where I just want to knock everything out. My strong work ethic has gotten me so far in my life. I am majoring in Criminal Justice and Forensics. As a POC, I believe we should have more of our people on the law scene, whether it be policemen, lawyers, crime scene cleanup, or social work. I want to be a crime scene investigator, but even before that, I want to help out my community as much as I can. I want to show that there is still some good in law enforcement and that we are here for them. I want to be able to connect with my community while I am on patrol, make connections with my neighbors, and show them that I will always be on their side. I want to rebuild that trust that was once lost.

I am the son of a retired Army soldier. My father was an E-5 and severed multiple tours in the middle east and Europe. I was never close to him because he was always gone on deployments or on security shifts. Even though we were never close or had a father-son bond, I still always looked up to him and admired him. He inspired me to follow my dreams and pursue something I love. When he retired, he became a stay-at-home dad for a while. This leads us to become closer during my high school years. I would wake up to him cooking me breakfast and offering to drive me to and from school. My dad soon became my best friend and that is what I needed in life. I remember hearing my parents argue about me never having a close connection with my dad and I am so happy that changed. My dad pushed me to start college classes in my sophomore year of high school and I am so happy he did. Dual enrollment classes helped me get ahead on my bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice and Forensics and also gave me more opportunities. Me and my dad talked about different pathways I could take and he suggested that I started with criminal justice and see where that goes. That little push, that little suggestion quite literally set me up for my future. Without my dad, I would probably be undecided in college and trying to find my major. I go to the University of North Georgia and this school is Georgia's number one military college. I am only in my second semester here but since my first semester, I was drawn to enlist in the military. Of course, I met with different recruiters and they all told me the same thing, "Education benefits, starting bonus, etc etc." I was struggling to decide if I really wanted to go into the military, and if I were to enlist, what branch I would want to enlist in. I didn't know if I wanted to become an airman or an army man. With me being at crossroads, I called the one person I knew that would help me. My dad. I call my dad and tell him what's going on and he gives me the best advice I could ever ask for. He told me about his time in the army and the cons but also the pros. My dad suggested that I should either wait until after college to enlist so I could go in as an officer or enlist now and have the military pay for my school. Since I am still unsure if I want to join, I am looking at waiting until I graduate but who knows?

I wouldn't know if this is important or a social issue but I working to address Trans Health care. I am a Hispanic and African American trans man and I struggled to receive gender-affirming care. I was fortunate enough to start paying out of pocket for testosterone and lab work through an organization called PLUME. Unfortunately, this organization can not distribute GHRT to certain states because of regulations and laws against Transgender health. I personally do not think this is right. I believe that everyone who wants to start hormone therapy should be able to do so without their state limiting substance or banning it. I am always hearing stories about trans youth struggling to start hormones because of state regulations or unsupportive parents. I even read an article about one of the states trying to change the age to receive hormone therapy to 26. Why do some people want to see transgender people suffer? HRT is such a life-changing process and it can even save someone's life if their depression stems from their dysphoria. I am trying to work with my school's GSA club to help promote the importance of hormones for transgender people and why it should be easier to get put onto them. During quarantine, I downloaded an app called Tik Tok. This social media app allows you to post 5-second videos to 10-minute videos. I took the chance and started posting silly little videos about anime or hopping on different trends. This resulted in me proliferating on the app, and now 2 years later, I am sitting on a fanbase of 15.2 thousand followers. I saw this as an opportunity to spread positive messages and my views on issues such as politics or the LGBT community. I am a trans creator that is currently on hormone therapy and I have made it my mission to try and update my followers on my journey and educate people on trans people's lives. I love what I do and I love the connections and friends I have made along the way. One of my favorite things to do is open up the app in the morning and see messages from different people saying how I made them realize they were trans and helped them become more comfortable in their skin. I am currently on a hiatus from the app because of college and my social life but I plan on getting back on and creating more informative and silly videos for my followers and other people that see my videos. Hopefully, I can start putting myself out there more and create more of an impact. I want to be able to work with PLUME and FOLXHEALTH, both are trans health care services that provide therapy and hormone therapy for transgender people. Tiktok has been the start of my future side career and I couldn't be happier.
