There have been many times when I relied on my faith in God to get me through many situations. The one in particular is the funding for my college education. When I was getting ready to apply to schools, I always wondered how I was going to afford it, and I think no one should be in that position, but that's how life is. I applied to places that I knew were below the academic level I wanted to reach, and I only kept in mind how much it would cost; it didn't matter how the campus looked, whether there was a dorm, or the food. My family was going through a rough patch, where my dad had gotten into an accident, which made him lose his job, my family from Jamaica came to live with us, and the cost of living just got prohibitive. There were many times when I spoke to different people, and I ended up talking to one person in particular, who led me to the right place. I was told to go pray and seek the Lord for direction, and that is what I did. Nothing ever happened overnight, but I prayed and prayed until I felt like something in my situation would change. The reason I applied to a few colleges was that there aren't many schools in Massachusetts that offer a major in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Ultrasound Technologist). It was either community colleges where I could get my associate's degree or going to school out of state, and I didn't want either option; I tried to exceed my own expectations. I ended up choosing a school with an okay campus, a diverse student body, and my major that I wanted to pursue. But the problem was that this school was still expensive. This decision had made me think a lot because I didn't know how I was going to afford this school, let alone be accepted into the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program, which only admits 13 people. Despite the setbacks and wariness, in faith I applied and hoped that I would get scholarships to cover the cost of y education and little did I know that God had aplan for me. I was accepted to the school and into my program, with scholarships that covered almost 80% of my tuition. Now, as an undergraduate student finishing my first semester, I thank God for the faith He has given me, because if it weren't for Him, I wouldn't be where I am today.

As a child, I never spoke up for myself. I would always sit in my seat and expect someone to feel the telepathic waves that I needed help, and being the person that I am, quiet and not talkative, it didn't help. There was one moment in my life in particular that I'll never forget. In high school, I remember sitting at my desk in my Precalculus Honors Class, keeping to myself. The teacher was at the front of the classroom, going over the classwork and asking if anyone had any questions. I did, but I rarely spoke in school, because I asked a question in front of everyone about something that didn't seem simple, but back then, it didn't make any sense. I was weighing my options. It was that everyone was going to make their little comments about how my question was dumb, or I wouldn't get the answer I wanted. I never ended up asking any questions during class, and I felt so incompetent because, in my head, I was put in this class for a reason, and I should be able to answer math questions. I ended up asking the question after class or the next day, and when I did, I felt stupid because the answer was as simple as tying a shoe. I've always struggled with math as a child and sometimes even now in college, but the difference between then and now is that I learned how to advocate for myself and speak up for myself when I need help. Looking back at the junior in high school and now, I think I've improved significantly in my confidence and the way I carry myself academically. In college, I've learned not to let the fear of judgment hold me back. Last semester, for instance, I joined a study group in my math class and was able to ask questions I might have avoided in high school. At first, I felt nervous speaking up in front of others. Still, I soon discovered that expressing my confusion not only helped me understand the material better, but also encouraged others who went through what I did to ask questions as well. I also became more active in attending tutoring sessions, getting online help, and going to office hours, and I've noticed how much it improves my understanding and grades. The confidence I have gained from these experiences has helped me feel more comfortable sharing my thoughts during class discussions. Moving forward, I hope to continue using my voice to advocate for myself and others, whether it's helping classmates understand challenging concepts or participating in campus events where I can make a difference. What once felt intimidating, like speaking up about a question in math class, has now become a tool I use to help me through challenges. Since I have gone through similar experiences, this lets me help others who might have gone through similar experiences that I did when I was a junior in high school.

Empowerment is the process of gaining confidence, strength, and control over one's life. It involves recognizing one's worth, making independent decisions, and striving for personal growth despite the challenges. For someone like me, a 17 year old, empowerment means believing in my abilities, setting goals, and overcoming societal expectations that could limit my potential. It allows me to take charge of my future and develop into a strong woman. One of the most significant aspects of empowerment is self confidence. When I believe in myself, I am more likely to take risks and challenge myself to do greater things. Whether it's applying for scholarships, pursuing a career, or speaking up In what I believe in, empowerment gives me the courage to step out of my comfort zone. Without confidence, I might doubt my abilities and miss out on chances that could shape my future. Life is full of obstacles, but having a strong sense of self allows me to face challenges head on rather than letting them defeat me. As a young woman, I may encounter setbacks in school, relationships, or career aspirations, but being empowered means that I will not give up. Instead, I will learn from my experiences and keep moving forward with determination. Empowerment allows me to inspire and uplift others. When I recognize my own strength, I can encourage my friends and family to do the same. I can support other young women in achieving their goals and to be a role model for those who need encouragement. Empowerment isn't just about personal success but, creating a lasting impact on the people around me. As I prepare for adulthood, empowerment will continue to play a crucial role in my life. It will guide me in making important decisions, navigating challenges, and staying true to my values. By embracing empowerment, I am setting myself up for a future where I am confident, independent, and capable of achieving my dreams. For young women who may be struggling with empowerment, it's important to know that confidence and strength doesn't come overnight, it's a journey. There will be time when doubt creeps in or when it feels like the world is against you, but that doesn't mean you aren't capable. Surrounding yourself with people who will uplift you, setting goals, and stepping outside your comfort zone can all help build self-assurance over time. Empowerment starts with believing in yourself, even when it feels difficult, and pushing forward despite the obstacles. No one else can define your worth except you.

Ever since I was young, I've been fascinated by the medical field. I always knew I wanted a career that would allow me to help people, but I wasn't sure exactly what that would be, until I discovered diagnostic medical sonography. This career perfectly combines my love for healthcare with my interest in technology, and I know it's the path that I want to follow. As a diagnostic medical sonographer, my job would be to use ultrasound technology to help doctors diagnose medical conditions and I would play an important role in patient care. What draws me to this field the most is the idea that I can make a real difference in people's lives. Many patients are scared and uncertain when they go to get an ultrasound, and I want to be someone who provides not just imaging but reassurance and comfort during what could be a stressful time. One of the biggest differences I hope to make in this career is improving patient experience. Medical visits can be intimidating, but I believe that a kind and understanding sonographer can ease any anxiety that may arise and make the process smoother. I want to be the kind of healthcare professional who takes the time to answer questions, explain procedures, and ensure that every patient feels heard and safe. Small moments of kindness in healthcare can make a huge difference, and I want to be someone who helps patients through their medical journey. Additionally, I hope to contribute to early detection efforts. Many conditions, such as cancer, can be caught early through imaging, increasing the chances of successful treatments. By performing precise and thorough scans, I can play a direct role in helping doctors catch illnesses before they become severe. The idea that my work could help save lives is incredibly meaningful to me, and it motivates me to work hard towards my goal. Beyond the technical skills, I know that becoming a great sonographer requires strong communication, patience, and empathy. I want to continuously learn and improve so I can provide the best care possible. Pursuing this career means committing to a lifetime of learning because everyday is another day where technology is advancing and evolving. I'm excited to take on that challenge and become a skilled, compassionate, and knowledgeable diagnostic medical sonographer, Through my work, I hope to make a meaningful impact on both individual patients and the healthcare field as a whole. Receiving this scholarship would bring me one step closer to achieving my dream. It would allow me to focus on my studies and training without the burden of financial stress. More important, it would help me gain the skills and knowledge needed to make a real difference in people's lives. I am determined to work hard, stay dedicated, and make the most of every opportunity so that I can one day contribute to a healthcare system that truly cares for its patients.
