Bio

My journey into neuroscience and medicine began through caring for patients long before I ever stepped into a research laboratory. As a Certified Nursing Assistant, I have accumulated over 16,000 hours of direct patient care, where I witnessed how illness, particularly neurological disease can reshape a person’s independence and quality of life. These experiences sparked my desire to better understand the brain and pursue a career in neuroscience and medicine. I worked as an Intramural Research Fellow at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS/NIH), where I contribute to behavioral neuroscience research studying how genetic and environmental factors influence brain function and behavior. Through this work, I have helped develop experimental protocols, analyze behavioral data, and contribute to scientific publications exploring neural mechanisms underlying behavior. My long-term goal is to become a physician-scientist working at the intersection of neurosurgery, neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. I hope to help develop technologies that improve how we interpret neural signals, enhance surgical precision, and expand treatment options for neurological disorders. I believe my experiences in patient care, research, and community service have prepared me to pursue this mission with both scientific curiosity and compassion.

      Sharra Rainbolt Memorial Scholarship
      I was nine years old in Sierra Leone when my father was diagnosed with brain cancer. At that age, I did not understand the biology of the disease, but I understood the fear it brought into our home. I remember watching a strong, hardworking man gradually lose his strength while my family struggled to process what was happening. In many parts of the world, including where I grew up, access to specialized cancer care is limited. As his illness progressed, I began to realize how devastating diseases like cancer can be not only for the person diagnosed but for the entire family. Losing my father to brain cancer changed the trajectory of my life. His illness left emotional scars, but it also awakened questions that continue to guide my path today: Why do diseases like cancer take so many lives? Why do some communities have access to treatment while others do not? And how can science and medicine change that reality? After my father passed away, my family had to learn how to move forward through grief and uncertainty. During that time, my faith became a source of strength and stability. It helped me believe that even in the midst of loss, life could still hold purpose and direction. That belief stayed with me as I grew older and eventually immigrated to the United States through adoption at the age of seventeen. Starting over in a new country came with its own challenges. I had to adapt to a new culture, pursue my education, and build stability for myself while carrying the memories of the experiences that shaped my childhood. Those early experiences with cancer continued to influence the choices I made in school and in my career. Today, I have accumulated thousands of hours working in healthcare as a Certified Nursing Assistant, caring for patients who are navigating serious illnesses. Sitting beside patients during vulnerable moments has reminded me how deeply illness affects not only individuals but entire families. These experiences have strengthened my empathy and reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career dedicated to improving patient care. My academic and research experiences in neuroscience have further deepened my interest in understanding the brain and neurological disease. Brain cancer was the illness that took my father’s life, and that reality has remained a powerful motivation for my work. Through research and education, I have begun to see how innovation; particularly in fields like artificial intelligence can transform the way doctors diagnose and treat complex diseases. In the future, I hope to contribute to the development of technologies that support physicians in treating neurological conditions and cancer more effectively. Advances in artificial intelligence are already helping surgeons analyze complex medical data and improve precision during delicate procedures such as brain surgery. My goal is to be part of the generation of physicians and researchers who help bring these innovations into patient care. Cancer changed my life at a young age, but it also gave me a sense of purpose. Losing my father taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of dedicating my life to helping others. His memory continues to guide my ambition to pursue medicine and research so that one day fewer families will have to experience the kind of loss that shaped my own journey.

From the moment I arrived, I began working while attending school, determined to build opportunities that once felt far out of reach. There were many moments when the challenges felt overwhelming. Balancing work, school, and the emotional weight of rebuilding my life sometimes made the future feel uncertain. During those times, I leaned heavily on my faith. Faith reminded me that obstacles are often part of a larger journey. It taught me patience, perseverance, and the belief that difficult seasons can still lead to meaningful purpose. My work in healthcare strengthened that faith even further. As a Certified Nursing Assistant, I have accumulated over 16,000 hours caring for patients. One area that particularly excites me is the use of artificial intelligence to support surgeons in making faster and more precise decisions during complex procedures, especially in neurosurgery. My father’s illness first sparked my curiosity about the brain. Today, that curiosity has evolved into a broader vision: combining neuroscience, medicine, and artificial intelligence to improve surgical outcomes and advance treatment for neurological disease. AI-assisted surgical tools have the potential to help physicians analyze complex neurological data, enhance precision during operations, and ultimately improve survival and recovery for patients facing devastating diagnoses like brain cancer. Receiving this scholarship would help support my education in artificial intelligence and computational methods that can be applied to medicine. My long-term goal is to become a physician who not only treats patients but also contributes to developing technologies that make surgery safer, more effective, and more accessible. Looking back, I realize that my faith has carried me through some of the most defining moments of my life: from losing my father in Sierra Leone, to rebuilding my life in the United States, to pursuing a future at the intersection of medicine and technology. Those experiences have shaped my commitment to transform personal loss into meaningful progress for patients around the world.
