As an Asian American nonbinary person who lived in a low-income family for most of their life, housing was always an issue that was on the top of my mind. Growing up, I learned about the importance of climate change and how critical it is for us to try to prevent and revert the effects of climate change. Those two concepts have pushed me to pursue a path of sustainable architecture so that I may be able to create a world where other kids that are born into low-income families don't have to worry about having a roof over their head, while also providing respite to our ever changing climate.

Growing up, I have always noticed the beauty of buildings surrounding me. The stained glass windows and steeples of the nearby church, the colors of the shingles and windows on a house, even the way that the school auditorium was shaped. All those things drew me toward the art of architecture. As I matured, I started realizing other important attributes of architecture as well, like the affordability of housing and the effects that architecture can have on the physical and social environment. I plan on being an architect that can bring a positive effect on the communities that I work in.
As an architect, I have a hunger to spread sustainability in building practices. Things like utilizing higher efficiency materials, alternative power sources, and manipulating the shape of buildings to involve the natural world are what I hope to use in my projects. I strive to put these ideas into practice no matter how small or large the project may be. Though I may strive to achieve all these goals, I also try to ground myself with the understanding that I do not have to achieve this alone. I want to be able to work in a team setting where I can shine and help others as well.
I believe in the importance of staying open-minded and creative, no matter what path I may pursue. The journey is just as important as the destination. As I work on projects, I will keep an open mind to suggestions made by others while still pursuing the main goal. When it comes to architecture, it is important to have fun with the process as well as staying focused on the bigger picture as to the purpose of the project.
To me, being super yet human means that I should go above and beyond in my work and my goals while also being empathetic to those around me. I am naturally data-driven and good at working with large data sets, which is a strength I plan to use on my journey as an architect. A weakness of being so data driven though is that I have a difficult time adapting to new situations or changing plans. Being empathetic means that I can put myself in the other party’s place and I am willing to share their vision.
In an overall sense, architecture is an art and a science to me. I strive to place great pieces of art into the world that simultaneously functions as a tool for building better communities. I want to do this by working with an excellent team, no matter where I am located. This will only be possible by me staying humble yet hungry, focused yet fun, and super yet human.
