I have been interested in aviation ever since a close friend of mine, Adam, showed me an airport hangar managed by his uncle. This hangar contained multiple multi-million dollar private jets, as well as a bomber that was built during the Korean war. Seeing this technology, new and old, up close and personal is what sparked my passion for aviation.
After this experience, I realized the aviation pathway is my calling, and I have since decided to make this calling a reality. As a high school senior, my senior project was returning to this hangar and assisting with the aircraft maintenance technicians. I then started my college experience at Santa Rosa Junior College with a declared major in mechanical engineering. During these first couple years in college, I watched Adam go to pilot school and start flying, with a close cousin also pursing a pilot's license. I was not in the financial situation to be able to acquire a pilot's license, so I pursued my second best option, which was learning as much as I possibly could about flying and the aviation industry.
Over these last few years of research and sifting through the endless aviation career options, I discovered a program that has led me to my current aspirations. This program being the United States Coast Guard College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative. While this program is not directly aviation related, it is what allows me to pursue an aviation career with the Coast Guard in the most streamlined way possible. This program will allow me to enlist in the Coast Guard as a college student, and work at an air station, part time, until I reach college graduation. Upon graduation I will be sent to Officer Candidate School, and soon after I will be able to enter flight school. The ability to enter flight school is due to the Pre-Commissioning program, and what is called the Wilkes Flight Initiative.
My time learning about my possible future as an aviator in the Coast Guard has made my passion and excitement for my career exponentially stronger. I plan on completing flight school and flying rotary wing aircraft for search and rescue. Not only will this career make me the best pilot I can be, but I will also be able to use my skills to help fellow citizens of this country. This prospective future career is inspiring me to fight for the success and execution of my career plans as a future aviator.
