My long-term career goal as a criminal justice attorney is to become a strong advocate for those who have been wrongfully accused or underserved by the legal system. I aim to specialize in cases involving wrongful convictions, ensuring that those who are innocent receive the justice they deserve. I want to work with organizations focused on reforming the criminal justice system, addressing systemic issues such as racial bias and inadequate legal representation. Ultimately, I envision establishing a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing legal aid and support to marginalized communities. With a passion for both criminal justice and animal welfare, my goal is to use my degrees in these fields to help those in my community who are in need. I am determined to become a criminal justice attorney and a zoologist, and I envision a future where I can combine both of these passions to make a lasting, positive impact. In pursuing a career in criminal justice, I am committed to fighting for the rights of individuals who are marginalized or voiceless in the legal system. Too often, individuals from underserved communities do not have access to adequate legal representation. I want to create a law firm that focuses on criminal defense and civil rights, where I can offer pro bono services to those who cannot afford a lawyer. By helping these individuals, I aim to give them a fair chance in court, ensuring that they have the legal support needed to navigate the justice system. I plan to focus on criminal cases, especially those involving racial or socioeconomic disparities, as I believe that everyone deserves a fair trial, regardless of their background or financial situation. This mission will be particularly important to me as I fight for justice and work to address systemic inequalities within the legal system. In addition to my legal career, I am passionate about animals and conservation, which is why I am pursuing a degree in zoology. From a young age, I have been fascinated by wildlife and the natural world. I believe that animals, like people, deserve protection, and I want to help preserve endangered species and their habitats. My dream is to build a zoo that serves as a sanctuary for animals in need, while also educating the public about conservation efforts. In this zoo, I would focus on species that are endangered or threatened, providing them with a safe and nurturing environment while promoting awareness about the importance of preserving biodiversity. I hope that through this zoo, people will develop a deeper connection with nature and feel motivated to take action in protecting wildlife and the environment. While these two career paths may seem unrelated, they reflect my desire to make a difference in multiple areas. My goal is to advocate for those who are often overlooked—whether they are individuals caught in the justice system or animals facing extinction. I believe that both human rights and animal welfare are essential, and they are interconnected in many ways. By becoming a criminal justice attorney, I will work to give people a voice. By becoming a zoologist and running a zoo, I will work to give animals a voice. Combining my legal career and my passion for animals will allow me to approach problems from multiple perspectives, whether it is addressing injustice in the courtroom or advocating for the preservation of wildlife. I also believe that both fields will enable me to educate others—whether it’s empowering individuals to stand up for their rights or teaching the public about the importance of environmental stewardship. I want to create a lasting impact on my community, not only by defending human rights but also by inspiring others to care for and protect the natural world. Ultimately, I see my journey as a way to give back to those who are in need, whether through offering legal aid to those facing injustice or creating a sanctuary for animals who have no voice. Through my career in criminal justice and zoology, I will dedicate myself to making the world a more just and compassionate place for both people and animals alike.
    Aserina Hill Memorial Scholarship
I am currently a high school student with a strong passion for criminal justice and a deep desire to help those who feel voiceless or marginalized. Throughout my academic journey, I’ve excelled in subjects like government, law, and history, where I developed a strong interest in criminal law and the justice system. My ultimate goal is to attend college to pursue a degree in criminal justice, attend law school, and eventually become a criminal justice attorney. Beyond academics, I am involved in several extracurricular activities that align with my interests and values. I am an active member of my school’s debate team, where I hone my skills in argumentation, public speaking, and critical thinking—skills that I know will be invaluable in my future career as a lawyer. Additionally, I volunteer with local organizations that focus on social justice, working with youth programs that provide mentorship to underprivileged students. These experiences have allowed me to understand the importance of community involvement and helping others, especially those facing systemic challenges. I am also involved in my school's student government, where I advocate for initiatives that promote diversity, inclusion, and mental health awareness. These activities have taught me the value of leadership, communication, and empathy—qualities that will be essential in my future legal career, particularly as I plan to focus on criminal justice reform and fighting for those who are often overlooked by society. After high school, my plan is to attend college and major in criminal justice, where I will gain the foundational knowledge I need to pursue a law degree. After law school, my long-term goal is to start my own law firm dedicated to criminal justice and providing pro bono services to individuals who cannot afford representation. I believe strongly in the power of the law to bring about positive change, and I want to ensure that everyone, regardless of their background or financial situation, has access to legal support and the opportunity to be heard. As a criminal defense attorney, I want to use my voice to advocate for those who may not have the means to fight for themselves, especially in cases involving injustice, unfair sentencing, and the disproportionate treatment of marginalized groups. If I could start my own charity, its mission would be to provide legal services, mentorship, and community support for individuals who have been wronged by the justice system, particularly those from low-income or marginalized backgrounds. I would focus on criminal justice reform, working to ensure that everyone, regardless of their financial status, has access to competent legal representation. The charity would also serve as a resource for individuals who are incarcerated, offering legal advice and support to help them navigate the legal system and fight for fair treatment. In summary, I am passionate about criminal justice and am committed to becoming a criminal defense attorney to fight for those who have been marginalized or silenced. Through my education, extracurricular activities, and community involvement, I am preparing for a future where I can create meaningful change. By starting a charity and focusing on pro bono work, I plan to give a voice to those who need it most and help ensure that justice is truly accessible to everyone.
Ismat Tariq Muslim Women Empowerment Scholarship
Growing up as a Muslim in an unwelcoming, predominantly white area significantly shaped my educational journey and future goals. From a young age, I faced discrimination and bullying, primarily because of my faith, which made me feel isolated and different. These experiences, however, also fueled my desire to pursue a career in law, specifically to become a lawyer who fights for the voiceless and marginalized individuals, just as I had felt voiceless for so much of my life. As a child in a community where very few shared my religion, I quickly became aware of my differences. I wore the hijab, practiced my prayers, and adhered to traditions that set me apart from my peers. Unfortunately, instead of being embraced for my unique identity, I was often met with suspicion, mockery, and even bullying. I was called derogatory names, harassed in hallways, and felt rejected by many of my classmates. These experiences created an emotional toll that affected my self-esteem and sense of belonging. For years, I struggled to reconcile who I was with the way others viewed me. At times, I questioned whether I should suppress my faith to fit in, but ultimately, I realized that my identity was something to be proud of, not hidden away. These struggles also had an impact on my education. The constant bullying and discrimination made school a challenging environment, and the emotional toll it took often distracted me from my studies. Yet, through it all, I was determined not to let others define me. I threw myself into my academics as a way to escape the negativity and focus on something positive. I excelled in subjects that allowed me to explore human rights, history, and justice, where I could learn about the importance of standing up for those who are oppressed and voiceless. The discrimination I faced as a Muslim in a largely unwelcoming environment ultimately became the driving force behind my decision to become a lawyer. As I continue my journey toward higher education and law school, I see this path as an opportunity to fight for justice and equity. Becoming a lawyer will allow me to not only represent individuals who have been discriminated against, but also work toward systemic change that ensures everyone, regardless of their background, is treated with fairness and dignity. Moving forward, I plan to pay it forward by helping future generations of students who face discrimination, bullying, or feel like they don’t belong. My goal is to use my experiences to support others in navigating similar challenges. I want to become a mentor to young students, especially those who are part of marginalized communities, showing them that their voices matter and that they have the power to create change. Whether through formal mentoring programs, community involvement, or sharing my story, I hope to provide guidance and encouragement to those who feel voiceless or unheard. In summary, my experiences as a Muslim in a predominantly white, unwelcoming area have deeply impacted my educational journey and aspirations. Despite the bullying and discrimination I faced, I have used these challenges as motivation to pursue a career in law, where I hope to be a voice for the voiceless and advocate for justice. Moving forward, I am committed to helping future generations of students who face similar struggles by mentoring, raising awareness, and working to create a more inclusive world. Down below is me, my mom and my brother getting ready to go to my criminal justice program graduation.
    Mental Health Profession Scholarship
Overcoming mental health challenges has been one of the most profound journeys of my life, and it’s an ongoing process. Reflecting on the difficulties I’ve faced, including childhood trauma from my parents being incarcerated, battling anxiety and depression, and experiencing derealization, I recognize how deeply these challenges have shaped me. However, I also see how far I’ve come and how this journey is one of growth, healing, and ultimately, support for others who face similar struggles. As a child, I was forced to confront the absence of my parents, both of whom were incarcerated. Their absence was more than physical—it was emotional. I felt abandoned, unloved, and confused. In a world that was already chaotic and uncertain, this loss created deep-seated trauma. I carried these feelings of betrayal and neglect well into my teenage and adult years. The void left by their absence impacted my self-worth and the way I connected with others. I couldn’t escape the feeling that something was broken inside me. For years, I tried to push through these emotions, but the weight of the trauma started manifesting as anxiety and depression. I constantly felt overwhelmed, like I was walking around in a fog. Simple tasks became insurmountable, and I started questioning my place in the world. I didn’t know how to manage the overwhelming thoughts and emotions. The loneliness and sadness felt unbearable at times, and the uncertainty of my future made it seem like there was no escape. This spiraled into a sense of derealization, where the world around me didn’t feel real. It was like I was watching my life from the outside, disconnected from everything and everyone. The turning point came when I realized that I couldn’t do this alone anymore. I sought help, first through therapy, where I began unraveling the layers of my childhood trauma. I learned that healing wasn’t linear—it wasn’t something I could rush or fix overnight. It required patience, self-compassion, and acknowledging that my pain was valid. Therapy helped me understand that the way I had been coping—by suppressing my emotions—wasn’t healthy, and that the key to healing was in facing the trauma head-on. I started practicing mindfulness and grounding techniques to combat the derealization, slowly re-engaging with the world around me. It wasn’t easy, and some days felt impossible, but the process of addressing my mental health made me feel empowered in ways I had never experienced. As I continue to heal, I’ve become committed to supporting others who face similar mental health challenges. I understand what it’s like to feel isolated and misunderstood, and I want to offer a space where people can feel seen and heard. I encourage others to seek help, whether through therapy, medication, or simply opening up to someone they trust. I also advocate for creating a more compassionate and supportive environment where mental health is prioritized just as much as physical health. Moving forward, I will continue to use my story to raise awareness about mental health challenges, especially those linked to trauma. By sharing my experiences, I hope to show others that healing is possible, no matter how dark the journey may seem. I plan to get involved with organizations that focus on supporting individuals who’ve experienced childhood trauma, incarceration, or mental health crises. Overcoming mental health challenges is not a destination, but a lifelong journey of learning, growth, and resilience. By continuing to share my story, supporting others, and raising awareness, I believe we can create a world where mental health is no longer stigmatized but embraced with empathy and understanding.

Growing up, I never knew what it was like to have a normal family. Before I was born, my father ran into legal trouble and got incarcerated for 13 years, then before I could even speak, my mother was incarcerated for eight years. My earliest memories are filled with the clinking of metal glass and the sterile smell of visiting rooms. As a child I didn't understand why I couldn't hug my mother or why my fathers face was framed by thick glass. Each time I visited them I felt a mix of anger, sadness, confusion and helplessness. I couldn't understand why the people I loved were taken away from me. All I had was my brothers, my twin brother and I were always close. We did everything together and my big brother was our protector. He took on the father figure role for us, but then he also fell into trouble with the law. It felt like my world was continually being ripped apart by forces I couldn’t understand. My parents absence was a constant presence in my life– a reminder of a system that failed us. As I got older I realized that the pain that my family and I endured was not just a series of unfortunate events but a reflection of a flawed system. These experiences could have easily hardened me, but instead they lit a fire within me. I decided that I wanted to be a lawyer, not just to fight for my parents and my brother but for all those that might be suffering from similar injustices. Hearing stories about my parents and how a mistake in the justice system had stolen not only their life away, but ours too, left a mark on me, fueling a desire to understand why our lives had been defined by such loss and hardships. I became determined to change the narratives for families like mine. I started to research cases about people that were wrongfully incarcerated, or people who have been incarcerated and decided to look at what went wrong with their case. I started studying debate teams and mock trials but, for some reason I kept losing interest. My motivation was my mom, my brother and my dad– I told myself I couldn't stop, I needed to do this not only for me but for them and all the kids that are going through what I went through. In my spare time after school I would volunteer and go to local legal aid clinics where I saw first hand the struggles of people who couldn’t afford the proper legal representation. I want to be that advocate that my family needed but never had. I am determined to fight against the injustices that have defined my life and bring awareness to those who are often forgotten. Becoming a lawyer is not just a career choice for me; it is a calling to ensure that no one else has to experience the pain that my family and I endured. I am determined to be a voice for the voiceless, to fight for those that are wrongfully accused and bring awareness to the justice system that too often fails the people it's meant to protect. My past has shaped me but it does not define me, instead it drives me forward, giving me the strength and determination to fight for a future where justice is truly blind. I am ready to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves, inspired by justices I witnessed and fueled by a desire to make a real difference.

Growing up, I never experienced the stability of a traditional family. Before I was born, my father faced legal troubles that led to a 13-year incarceration, followed by my mother’s eight-year sentence when I was just an infant. My earliest memories revolve around sterile visiting rooms, where the clinking of metal glass became a haunting soundtrack. I couldn’t understand why I was separated from my parents, and each visit left me with feelings of anger, sadness, and confusion. The absence of my parents was a constant reminder of a system that failed us, and as a child, I felt helpless against forces beyond my comprehension. My earliest memories are dominated by the sterile smells and clinking sounds of visiting rooms, where I grappled with feelings of confusion, sadness, and helplessness. Career Test for Future Lawyers Scholarship
My desired career path as a lawyer is rooted in my passion for environmental justice and animal rights. I aim to specialize in environmental law, focusing on issues that intersect with wildlife conservation and sustainability. This dual focus allows me to advocate for the protection of our planet while ensuring that legal frameworks are in place to support both human and animal welfare. To achieve this goal, I have taken several important steps and have plans for further development. Currently, I am pursuing a degree in pre-law, where I concentrate on courses such as environmental law, ethics, and policy. These classes provide me with a foundational understanding of the legal principles that govern environmental issues, equipping me with the knowledge necessary to navigate complex legal landscapes. In addition to my academic pursuits, I have sought out internships and volunteer opportunities that align with my career aspirations. I have volunteered with local wildlife rehabilitation centers, where I gained hands-on experience in animal care and learned about the legal protections in place for endangered species. This experience not only deepened my understanding of the challenges wildlife face but also ignited my desire to fight for their protection through legal means. Furthermore, I have interned at a law firm that specializes in environmental litigation, where I assisted with legal research and case preparation. This exposure to the practical aspects of law has sharpened my analytical and critical thinking skills, essential attributes for any successful lawyer. My experiences, skills, and interests align seamlessly with my chosen career path. I possess strong communication abilities, which are crucial for effectively conveying complex legal concepts to clients, judges, and juries. My background in volunteering has instilled in me a deep sense of empathy and a commitment to advocacy. I am driven by the belief that everyone—humans and animals alike—deserves a voice in the legal system. Looking ahead, I envision positively impacting my future profession by not only representing clients but also contributing to meaningful policy changes that promote environmental conservation. I aspire to engage in public interest law, using my skills to advocate for legislation that addresses pressing environmental issues. Additionally, I hope to collaborate with non-profit organizations and governmental agencies to develop initiatives that foster a greater understanding of the interconnectedness between legal protections and ecological health. By pursuing this dual career path, I aim to create a more equitable legal landscape where both people and wildlife are protected. My commitment to advocacy, combined with my legal training, will empower me to be a force for positive change in the realms of environmental and animal law.
