The last time I visited Ghana, my parents' home country, I noticed something I don't usually look for. I saw the small business owners and was inspired by their drive and determination just to make ends meet. Many of them worked tirelessly to support their families and communities, running food stands, small shops, or local services with incredible passion. I thought about how much better the community could be doing as a whole if it had better financial knowledge. I know that some didn’t keep consistent records, while others struggled to plan for growth or handle taxes. Seeing how much potential was limited by a lack of accounting skills made me realize the power of financial education.
More specifically, I met a man named Irog, who ran a small bofrot stall outside of the neighborhood I was staying in for the summer. Every morning, he would arrange his stand perfectly—fresh bofrot ready for all who came seeking, and a proud smile on his face. Despite his hard work, I knew that he often struggled to keep track of his earnings. Tracking sales would allow him to elevate his business by seeing what works for him.
That experience shaped my decision to pursue a degree in accounting. To me, accounting is more than managing somebody's money—it’s about creating structure, stability, and a proper and organized lifestyle. It gives people the tools to understand their businesses and make informed decisions that lead to long-term success. Through my studies, I want to gain the knowledge needed to become a Certified Public Accountant and use that expertise to make a difference in people’s lives.
My long-term goal is to return to Ghana and help small business owners strengthen their financial understanding. I seek to combine a college education with what I’ve learned from
being in an Entrepreneurship and Business academy and apply it to a bigger stage. I hope to create workshops and foundations that teach entrepreneurs from my community how to track expenses, manage budgets, and build sustainable businesses. A college-level education in Accounting would bolster my understanding of global perspectives and innovation, aligning perfectly with my vision to create sustainable solutions for economic challenges in places like Ghana.
Beyond Ghana, I also hope to promote ethical financial practices wherever I work, using accounting as a way to strengthen communities and build trust in business. I believe that every successful business needs proper bookkeeping to succeed because, without accurate financial records, even the most promising ideas can fall apart due to poor planning, missed opportunities, or overlooked problems.
I see accounting as the foundation that allows businesses to grow with confidence and integrity. By mastering this skill, I hope to use my education to help others build sustainable success not only for the community in my hometown but also in Ghana, where I gained the determination to support those striving for a better future.
