Bio

My name is Jasmine Cooper and I am attending Stratford High School as a Senior. In my school, I participate in Jostens Renaissance, BETA, National Honor Society, Unified Knights, Teachers Cadet, and a student leadership program. Being the president of the National Honor Society I am beginning to show others my values of taking part in many public service activities in our community, school, and church. As a society, we should help those around us to shape a better future for generations to come. My goals in academics and my career are to attend college to get my Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education so I can teach first grade in my hometown of Summerville, South Carolina, or the surrounding area. This pathway best fits my goal to give back to the community that once helped me.

My main career goal I have is to help children who may be struggling academically or in their personal life. This goal is influenced by one of the many great teachers I have had who is the definition of kind. I was introduced to Mrs. Ward my freshman year of high school one Monday in August after school. She introduced me to the Leadership program that has fueled much change in me and my perspective on life. I learned to be kind not only to others but myself as well. She taught me that in order to grow I had to get uncomfortable and push my boundaries. When I first met her I was facing many battles mentally that I was too afraid to open up about them, yet she was there through it all showing me kindness. Mrs. Ward is the type of teacher I can only strive to be like, for I have not met anyone as kind and invested into helping students of all backgrounds as she is. She helped to create an environment where I knew I had a trusted individual who I can go to for any problems whether it be academic, mental, or something out of my control in my personal life. The leader I have become is evidence on the influence and the impact kind-hearted educators and the community have on younger generations.

The books you read, the people you meet, and the things you witness from a young age all the way to the end of life will shape you in some shape or form. An American novelist by the name of Chuck Palahniuk is quoted saying, “nothing of [him] is original. [He is] the combined effort of everyone [he’s] ever known.” Each and every book I have read since elementary school has teached me something different. When we are young they teach us teamwork, kindness, compassion, and to think outside the box. These are all things that are important in our youth to shape us into well standing citizens, yet when we get older different books will teach us how much we have strayed away from what we are taught. In middle school, I’ll always remember these years, we learn about the past of our nation and the world around us. We read about the good, the bad, and the ugly, yet we have no way of truly knowing until we grow older and continue to read how much the world has stayed the same. In these years I remember learning about all of the atrocities that had taken place and all of the ways people had to fight to not just survive, but to live. The two words may have been the same to me as a little elementary school kid, but as someone who has witnessed more of life and read more and more, the difference continues to grow. As I wrap up my final year of high school, I am left to wonder what could have been if more people picked up a book or two and actually had the courage to learn and understand a change is needed instead of regurgitating some answers for a test. If they looked deeper would they see that people are still fighting the battle between survival and living? Would they recognize that our history of pain and suffering is not that far behind us, and we continue to repeat the cycle of violence? Maybe these questions could find answers if I actually digested that Martin Luther King Jr. said, “our lives begin to end the moment we become silent about things that matter” (I Have A Dream). How easy is it to judge others for their lack of reading, when I myself fall short of the same principle I claim to stand by. My intellect and emotional intelligence are thanks to teachers, books, family, and community. I love reading everything in fiction and all there is to expand my knowledge in non-fiction. Reading opens the doors of tomorrow so that I might be the best me I can be. I may not be the greatest bibliophile, philosopher, or anything of that nature, but what I hold is so much stronger. I hold the key to my future and the one to those around me; each book I get the privilege to hold is another step to my purpose. I believe all students deserve access to education. Education is one of the highest privileges there is and knowing that I had activists fight for this right, I want to honor them in the best way that I can. Nelson Mandela, one of the many influential activists once said, “[e]ducation is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" (Mandela). The change I will make starts with me being an educator. Educators are the backbone of providing a better future, yet it all comes back to some of the first books you will ever read that teach you kindness.

I believe all students deserve access to education. In each scholarship essay I explain the importance of education and just how much of a privilege it is. My personal reasons I believe education is important to deal with my personal circumstances. The most influential personal goal I have set in place for myself is influenced by my family. I have three older cousins yet, I will be the first to graduate high school. Education is one of the highest privileges there is and knowing that I had activists fight for this right, I want to honor them in the best way that I can. Nelson Mandela, one of the many influential activists once said, “[e]ducation is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" (Mandela). Each day I have spent after hearing this quote has guided me to my purpose in life. My younger cousins and brothers will look to me as if I am a castle upon the hill as they see the opportunities education can bring. Going even further, I know God has placed me on this Earth to educate our future generations. The first step towards this purpose has been God giving me Meg Ward. I was introduced to Mrs. Ward my freshman year of high school. This Jostens Renaissance Hall of Famer has been nothing short of amazing to all of her students. She pushed me to be comfortable with the uncomfortable and join her leadership class. Aristotle has been quoted saying, “[e]ducating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all,” this is a quote that highly represents the principles the leadership program and Mrs. Ward has taught me. When I first met her I was facing many self-image issues, yet she was there to help. Mrs. Ward is the type of teacher I can only strive to be like; I have not met anyone as kind and invested into helping students of all backgrounds as she is. She helped to create an environment where I knew I had a trusted individual who I can go to for any problems whether it be academic, mental, or something out of my control in my personal life. This is who I am meant to be.

Every person no matter their age, background, or gender should have a strong community that empowers them. Having access to a strong community helps motivate a person to achieve greatness. Without people to empower me I would have never grown. Growing up I was bullied in and outside of school. Knowing that I had many younger cousins and my two brothers looking up to me, I felt a need to protect them and show them kindness that was not always granted to me. My ambition is to be a mentor and catalyst for my younger cousins and brothers to spread kindness and love in a world filled with hatred. My three older cousins who I had to look up to, have not completed high school or obtained a GED because of their home life. Working with kids has been my calling for as long as I can remember as if it encoded in my DNA. In my academic career I began to take part in service organizations such as BETA, National Honor Society, and Jonsten’s Renaissance, alongside classes that helped me to empower students including Teacher’s Cadet. As I continue to take part in these community services my longing to be a good educator that lets her students know that kindness pays off continues to grow. In order to be a good first grade teacher I looked into courses, certifications, degrees, and work studies that I may be able to apply for so I can be the best educator I can. My main career goal I have is to help empower children who may be struggling academically or in their personal life. Yet, in order to complete the idea of being as good of an educator as Meg Ward my finances need to be set. Having access to financial assistance allows me to attend Charleston Southern University to get a degree and help the upcoming generations as many great educators before me have done. Everyone deserves to have their own Meg Ward. I am so incredibly blessed to be put on a path that allows me to give back to my community. As Christ continues to lead me on my journey, I will have no fear. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Being president of the National Honor Society, let alone any club or organization, takes hard work and dedication. To be a member one must have good academics, leadership skills, and responsibility. These are a few of the qualities I believe are important about myself. In my life so far I have participated in various areas of service inside and outside of an academic setting such as our school. As a Christian and a future educator I maintain a certain set or principles and moral. To be seen as a leader you have to have a good character and help those around you as much as you can through acts of service. I have dedicated my whole life to following God's intended purpose for me. All three of my older cousins have not completed high school or obtained a GED because of their home life. My goal is to help kids who like them, do not have the same opportunities and motivation to further their education. Working with kids has been my calling for as long as I can remember as if it encoded in my DNA. In my academic career I began to take part in service organizations such as BETA, National Honor Society, and Jonsten’s Renaissance, alongside classes that helped me to be introduced to my career including Teacher’s Cadet and Children’s Literature. To be able to be a leader in character is highly important. Growing up, I was teased and picked on for things out of my control, so as I grew older I vowed to myself to not try to get back at them in a malicious way, but to show them what a person of good character is to do. As a student leader I have averaged eighteen independent hours on top of group projects since my sophomore year of high school. Many of the community building activities I have taken part in include, but are not limited to, events involving those with special needs, welcome orientations, and various incentives for students, staff and faculty to be recognized and rewarded. The most impactful leadership opportunity I have had in my life would have to be the Love Gave I participated in my sixth grade year. Being able to witness first hand at a young age how influential I can be on complete strangers has stuck with me since. A small act of kindness put on to provide families with necessities and a few wants for that holiday season is something I think about everyday. When we are young, we are often blissfully unaware how privileged we are. As I continue to advocate and be a leader in my everyday life, I strive to continue to be a pillar in bettering our tomorrow. As I conclude my self-evaluation, I want to say that there is no stopping me from trying to do more service, increasing leadership skills, and building a better character for myself. I may not be able to be as influential as Dr. King or Malala Yousafzai, but if I can change the life of one individual I have served my purpose. As Christ continues to lead me on my journey, I will have no fear. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Teaching is not a career for me, but my purpose. Teaching has been my sole reason for many of the decisions I make on the classes and extracurricular activities I take part in. As someone who is not only an older sister, but the oldest cousin in general I have found it increasingly important to help those who are younger than me be the best versions of themselves they can be. In order to make the world a better place and provide a good future for all, you have to start small in hopes of it becoming greater than yourself. As an educator, you have to teach students from different walks of life and pray that life treats them well. My ambition is to be a mentor and catalyst for my younger cousins and brothers to spread kindness and love in a world filled with hatred. The leader I have become is evidence on the influence and the impact kind-hearted educators and the community have on younger generations. Yet, in order to complete the idea of being as good as an educator as Meg Ward my finances need to be set. Having access to financial assistance allows me to attend a college or university to get a degree and help the upcoming generations as many great educators before me have done.Thank you for your time and consideration.

Growing up I was bullied in and outside of school. Knowing that I had many younger cousins and my two brothers looking up to me, I felt a need to protect them and show them kindness that was not always granted to me. My goal is to be a mentor and catalyst for my younger cousins and brothers to spread kindness and love in a world filled with hatred. My three older cousins who I had to look up to, have not completed high school or obtained a GED because of their home life. My goal is to help kids who like them, do not have the same opportunities and motives to further their education in their homes. As I continue to take part in these community services my longing to be a good educator that lets her students know that kindness pays off continues to grow. In order to be a good first grade teacher I looked into courses, certifications, degrees, and work studies that I may be able to apply for so I can be the best educator I can. Learner Math Lover Scholarship
Math is a subject that not many enjoy, myself excluded. Math has always been my favorite subject. The concept does not come easy to all yet it can be fun to learn. I love math because it is a good challenge. Life uses math in just about everything. Medicine, surgery, buying groceries, and so much more require an individual to know some level of math. From addition to calculus and statistics, math can open the door to so many new discoveries. In the medical world math can help patients not receive too little or too much antidote to their problems. If I was a patient I would hope that my doctor was very knowledgeable in math. Imagine a world without doctors who do not know how to do mathematical problems that you need. I would not be very joyful with being awake during open heart surgery; my heart would be in just as much shock as I am. In another medical case, imagine taking too much of a dosage for any type of medicine. Math is important for survival, that is why I love math. A world without math is extremely difficult to imagine. As we go about our lives, math is everywhere. The more a person realizes math is everywhere, the more they begin to love it.

Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
Growing up as a darkskin, chubby, black girl in the south I was bullied for various reasons. I’ve been called just about every name in the book and it sticks with me to this day. I grew up hating myself so much that it hurt to look in the mirror. I isolated myself, I tried to starve myself, and I often prayed for God to take me in my sleep. I still struggle with this same mindset yet I know that my family is depending on me to be the example my younger cousins and brothers need. Every day that I get to live I am reminded that my purpose in life is so much bigger than how I feel about myself at the moment. If I want to help change the world and influence others to keep going, then I have to do so myself. I can’t keep telling others to love themselves when I do not feel the same internally. If I could go back to my past I would tell my younger self that everything is going to turn out fine. Struggling so deeply with mental health needs to be talked about and not locked away like I did. No one should have to fight mental battles with themselves every day. Knowing how much I struggled mentally and emotionally from a young age has influenced me to want to give back to my community in the ways I needed. I am going to keep living not just for myself, but to show others that it is possible. I wish I knew back then what I know now. I have the opportunity to take control over my own life. People in life will not always like or respect you, but that does not mean you shouldn’t love and respect yourself. Concluding, mental health is a very serious matter that has no linear improvements, yet is important to keep pushing forward.

The loss of a loved one is a pain I wish for no one to experience, yet unfortunately death calls no matter how old one may be. Since I was a very young girl, I would go with my grandparents to visit my grandmother’s sister. My great-aunt Aida was a wonderful woman. Anyone who had the privilege of meeting her would tell you the same. Her and my grandmother were extremely close, so by default I began to get close to her as the years passed. I remember how on every visit she would give me the biggest hugs every time I saw her. She would say, “I miss your cute little smile”, and I would reply, “and I missed yours”. Being so young I didn’t think I would ever give up our little saying, though unfortunately we had to. No longer did I get to receive her great big hugs or say our sweet little greetings, instead I saw her in a hospital room and not her cozy home. I can’t pinpoint the exact moment things began to change, but I will always remember the tears I shed when I realized our time together was coming to an end. Cancer, a small six letter word that holds so much meaning. Being young and innocent I did not know just how hard small words could hurt you. Cancer. It wasn’t a cold or the flu, my aunt had Cancer. The woman who I held so dear in my heart, would soon no longer be with me physically but only through memories. The hugs, smiles, and hairstyles she gave me are only with me through memories now. There are no more summer trips to her cozy home, but now to a chilly graveyard. I remember being young and loving how cozy and warm I always felt around her, then the hospital visits took its place. I never liked going to the hospital. I found myself hating how the doctors couldn’t make her feel better. Doctors were my superheroes yet they began to be my villains through a six letter word, cancer. My great-aunt Aida who used to give me great big hugs, smiles, and cute hairstyles could no longer do most things on her own because of that six letter word yet again, cancer. The person who was my rock needed me to be there for her. As I reflect on her last moments, I reflect on when I felt my love for her be the strongest. The woman who showed nothing but love and kindness to me even in her last moments on Earth continues to guide me everyday. Her strength, bravery, and kindness helped shape me into the young woman I am today. Losing her to the six letter word, Cancer, taught me to show a shorter word that is impactful in its own right, love. Death takes away our loved ones, but grief allows us to show love in a whole new way.

Having access to financial assistance allows me to attend a college or university to get a degree and help the upcoming generations as many great educators before me have done.Thank you for your time and consideration.

Growing up I was constantly the oldest child in most family settings. Considering my age gap to my brothers and cousins there was, and continues to be, certain responsibilities needed to be maintained. My goal is to be a mentor and catalyst for my younger cousins and brothers to be outstanding in whichever career they choose to go into. Working with kids has been my calling for as long as I can remember as if it was almost encoded into my genetic makeup. In my academic career I began to take part in service organizations such as BETA, National Honor Society, and Jonsten’s Renaissance, alongside classes that helped me to be introduced to my career including Teacher’s Cadet and Children’s Literature. I began to have an internal battle with myself on how to accomplish being a good educator, albeit I produced a set goals for myself academically to help conquer future career tasks. In order to be a first grade teacher I looked into courses, certifications, degrees, and work studies that I may be able to apply for so I can be the best educator I can. My main career goal I have is to help children who may be struggling academically or in their personal life. This goal is influenced by one of the many great teachers I have had, her name is Meg Ward. I was introduced to her my freshman year of high school in Renaissance club one Monday in August after school. She introduced me to the Leadership program that has fueled much change in me and my perspective on life. I learned to be kind not only to others but myself as well. She taught me that in order to grow I had to get uncomfortable and push my boundaries. When I first met her I was facing many battles mentally that I was too afraid to open up about them, yet she was there through it all. The leader I have become is evidence on the influence and the impact educators and the community have on younger generations. Finances seem to be one of the biggest issues in education, housing, food, and so many more problems that may seem small to others. When I was younger I took the initiative to try and teach my younger siblings and cousins what they will begin to learn in their upcoming school year. I made educational games, prize boxes, hands-on activities to do in the house and more to keep them engaged and excited. My goal has, and always will be, is to be a mentor for my younger cousins and brothers to be unbelievably outstanding in whichever career they choose to go into. Working with kids and teaching them to be leaders is my destiny. In my academic career I take part in service organizations such as BETA, National Honor Society, and Jonsten’s Renaissance, alongside classes that introduce me to my career. Teacher’s Cadet, Sociology, Psychology, and Children's Literature have been very helpful. My main goal I have is to help children who may be struggling academically or in their personal life. This goal is influenced by one of the many great teachers I have had, her name is Meg Ward. She introduced me to the Leadership program that has fueled much change in my perspective on life. Mrs. Ward is the type of teacher I can only strive to be like, for I have not met anyone as kind and invested into helping students of all backgrounds as she is. Her teaching has allowed students to become leaders in our schools and communities. In my career I hope to teach kids to advocate for themselves and others. The leader I have become is evidence on the influence and the impact educators and I hope to do the same for younger generations. In my classroom my students will feel welcomed, loved, heard, and seen. When children are surrounded with positivity they will feel more put in the effort needed in order to be successful in and outside of the classroom. Yet, in order to complete the idea of being as good as an educator and leader as those before me, my finances need to be set.
