Even when I looked at him, and it seemed like he wasn’t there at all, as he scratched at his skin, like it itched on the inside, as he continued to forget words that just left his mouth, and conversations that he was recently present in, I chose to believe it would all resolve itself. The gravity of his situation didn't truly hit me until the night my parents received a dreaded phone call, and my sister and I rushed to the hospital. My brother had overdosed, and for the first time, I feared losing him forever. Thankfully, he survived, but the experience was a wake-up call that addiction is not an ailment that one merely recovers from; it is a lifelong condition that demands constant vigilance and support. As he went through rehab, I came to understand the complexities of addiction and the burden it places not only on the individual but also on their loved ones. During quarantine, I did not feel like myself and I could not talk to my friends due to covid. When I did not have a voice, I wrote my thoughts down. Eventually, when I started to look at the people, the country, and the world around me, I decided that I wanted to give a voice to those who had no voice. I want to spread awareness to the world about mental health, racism, female empowerment, equal rights, etc. I want to share my thoughts with the world. My poetry is my microphone. I plan to use it.
