If I could have everyone in the world read just one book, the book that I would pick would be “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky. The book follows the high school freshmen life of a socially awkward teenage boy named Charlie. He mostly observes people and doesn’t have any friends. However, that changes when he meets Patrick and Sam, two high school seniors who help show him life beyond school. They go to parties together, talk at school, attend holiday parties, and attends a recreated play version of the Rocky Horror Picture that Patrick, Sam, and some of their other friends do. Charlie eventually becomes attached to Patrick and Sam, spending most of his time with the two. By the time Patrick and Sam graduate, Charlie has learned how to be more social and feels prepared for his sophomore year of high school. I think that the world should read this book because it is very relatable. The book shows the typical high school life of a student, while also portraying everything else that happens on the sidelines, which is his home life. It also shows lots of emotions and how teenagers can struggle mentally and physically, which is realistic considering many students today also struggle with many issues. In addition, book also shows some valuable lessons that others, especially shy and introverted people like Charlie, should know. One example is when Charlie’s teacher tells Charlie to try and be a filter, not a sponge. Instead of listening and doing everything that others tell you to do or believe, you should instead filter out the bad stuff and keep what you believe is right. Lastly, another valuable lesson is when Patrick calls Charlie a “wallflower”. Being a wallflower means that you are reserved, shy, and frightened to involve yourself in social situations. These lessons are all very relatable that many teenagers and adults can connect to. In conclusion, I believe that the whole world should read “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” by Stephen Chbosky due to its valuable life lessons and showing realism through its format of diary entries, which helps the readers connect to the main character. My thoughts about the Ode To Millennials-Gen Z text in the description is that our generation have many differences. From the way we do things to the ways we treat people and solve problems, there are times when the ideals and strategies of the older and younger generations clans and don’t get along. One example of this is the cell phone. Us young people are constantly on our phones while the adults are constantly telling us to get off the phone and do something else. However, the older and younger generations have many similarities as well. Both the older and the younger generations have a call to destiny and both have had or are currently dealing with a tough world. The older generation had to deal with war where society had to question of survival. While our generation isn’t dealing with a war, we are dealing with problems that are just as concerning and also puts our future into question, such as climate change, low income and unemployment, bankruptcy, paying back school loans, and a very expensive healthcare system. Just like the older generation pushed through these problems with determination, a sense of duty, and grace, we are also pushing through our problems. The only difference is that we push through with politeness, kindness, and a mindset which is absent of resentment, which is another Leah’s of ideals and strategies between the young and the old. However, I notice that even though these differences are evident and existing, both generations are able to deal with National problems and are able to become “Great Generations”, which could mean that we are more similar than we may have thought before. As for our future, my idea is that our generation, as well as the older generation, will work together, push past there differences, and collaborate to find solutions to the many problems that we are dealing with currently. My dreams for the future are to get into the college of my choice, graduate college, and to become an elementary school teacher. That way, I can help kids learn new things. I want to go to college because I am a first generation student, which means that I will be the first in my family to go to college. So, it would mean a lot to get into college and graduate. This would not only make my family proud, but also set a good example for my little brother who looks up to me. I also want to go to college because the job I want to pursue, which is an elementary school teacher, requires a degree and certification, which ultimately means that I have to go to college to achieve that. I want to become an elementary school teacher because my mother was also an elementary school teacher. However, she had to move and lose her job as a result. She told me many stories about teaching when she taught kindergarten. These stories fascinated me and got me interested in the field of education. Therefore, I want to become a teacher just like her. To become a teacher, I have some experience. After school, I tutor kids as part of a community service program. The program is mainly homework help, so my job is to help the kids with their homework. I also tutor my brother in English since that is his weakest skill in school. For some extra experience of working with people, I also volunteer in community events around where I live, Staten Island, as part of a cultural dance team. We give out food and drinks to the attendees, dance, and donate food to organizations. For college, I have a savings account where I save money to pay for tuition, transportation, and other college expenses. I also strive to keep high standards for myself to be a good college student. This includes getting good grades to have a good academic profile, not cutting or skipping classes to be a responsible high school student, taking College Now classes to get used to college level work, not being absent from school to not miss anything important, and participating in clubs after school to show my skills outside of school. I am also part of the National Honors Society, which can help give me some more volunteer and extracurricular activities to do, enhance my college profile and give me a good chance of getting into the college of my choice. In conclusion, I aspire to go to college, graduate, and become an elementary school teacher to teach kids and help them towards their futures. To go on the right path and achieve these goals, I’ve done volunteer work, taken College Now classes, tutored kids after school, and maintained a high academic profile. My name is Jannelly Samano. My career of choice is to be an elementary school teacher. It has been my dream job and one of my biggest goals to teach kids and help them learn and succeed in life. I am passionate about becoming an elementary school teacher because my mother was also an elementary school teacher. However, she had to move and lose her job as a result. She told me many stories about teaching when she taught kindergarten. For example, she told me about how children would be fascinated when they finally learned something new. My mother found it especially magical when you could see the fascination on their faces. She said it made her feel so happy that the kids were learning. I also feel that happiness when I help my brother with homework or tutor kids for community service. You can see how the children feel proud about themselves with their movements, body expressions, and tone of voice. Seeing my brother smiling and saying: “Look, I can do it! I finally solved the problem!” makes me feel joy inside. I want to reciprocate that feeling and help other kids in my community. In addition, I have a soft spot for smaller kids. I have heard other parents say that I have a lot of patience. I can tolerate smaller children and know how to communicate with them. Therefore, because of these reasons, I want to become an elementary school teacher just like her. I have had to make some sacrifices to be able to accomplish these goals. Firstly, I’ve had to set aside some of my time to gain experience with working with children. I help my brother with homework and tutor kids in my neighborhood for community service. I do this after school from 3 PM to 4 PM since I have other extracurricular activities after school. Secondly, I’ve also had to set aside time for school and studying. Since my parents are low-income, I want to work extra hard to get good grades and hopefully get a scholarship so my parents don’t have to pay a lot of money for my tuition. Since I like to spend my time studying, I have had to turn down many hangouts with friends. Lastly, I have had to get over my social anxiety. Since being a teacher means being with new people and talking with parents, supervisors, and administrators, I knew that I had to get over my fear of social interactions. I first told my parents, who gave me some tips on how to manage my anxiety. They also ask me to make appointments and ask employees for help so I can practice interacting with others and to help manage my anxiety. I also go to therapy to learn new skills on how to manage the feeling of negativity and feel more confident when talking to people. I didn’t want to go at first since I was very afraid of communicating with others. But, as the weeks went by, I have noticed a big improvement. I continue to go to therapy and I believe that with time, I’ll get over my anxiety completely. In conclusion, I want to be an elementary school teacher due to the feeling of joy and happiness I get when helping children and teaching them new things. I am on the path to achieve this goal by taking the time to gain experience, study, and getting over my social anxiety. Thank you for your time and consideration!
