My name is Janiyah Salisbury, and I am someone who has always felt called to help others. I find purpose in offering support, providing comfort, and being a source of strength during difficult times. That is why I am pursuing a career in nursing. Becoming a registered nurse (RN) will allow me to live out these values every day, using both clinical skills and compassion to make a real impact on people’s lives. I believe nursing is one of the most rewarding and honorable professions, and I’m fully committed to joining a field that puts others first.
I’ve been drawn to healthcare for as long as I can remember, but the decision to become an RN solidified through both personal experiences and hands-on exposure to the medical field. One of the most influential moments was when a close family member became seriously ill. During their time in the hospital, I watched how the nurses not only cared for their physical needs but also provided emotional support for my entire family. They were a constant source of knowledge, kindness, and reassurance qualities I hope to bring to my own future patients. Their presence during such a stressful time showed me how powerful and essential nurses truly are.
As I look ahead, I plan to specialize in pediatric nursing. I have always enjoyed working with children, and I believe that helping young patients through illness or injury requires a unique balance of gentleness, patience, and medical skill. Children may not always understand what is happening to them, and I want to be the nurse who can bring comfort, clarity, and even a sense of peace to both the child and their family. I’m drawn to the challenge and the responsibility of being a steady, caring presence in those moments when it matters most.
To prepare for this next step in my journey, I’ve made a conscious effort to build both the academic foundation and real-world experience that will help me succeed as a nurse. I have taken science-based courses, including biology and anatomy, which have strengthened my understanding of how the body functions and how diseases affect it. In addition, I’ve volunteered at a local hospital, where I had the opportunity to assist in patient transport, support staff with basic tasks, and spend time with patients to brighten their day. Though I wasn’t providing direct medical care, the experience taught me a lot about hospital routines, the importance of teamwork, and how meaningful simple acts of kindness can be.
Outside of academics and volunteering, I’ve worked part-time while maintaining strong grades, which has helped me develop time management, responsibility, and resilience. These traits will serve me well in nursing school and in the fast-paced, demanding environments nurses often work in.
In becoming an RN, I’m not just choosing a career-I’m answering a calling. I want to be someone who makes people feel seen, heard, and cared for during some of the most important moments in their lives. Nursing offers me the chance to use both my heart and my mind in service of others, and I am excited and fully committed to taking the next step toward this meaningful profession.

The nursing industry interests me as a career choice because it combines my deep compassion for others with my strong desire to make a lasting, positive impact in people’s lives. From a young age, I have been drawn to caregiving roles whether helping to care for a sick family member or assisting classmates in need. Nursing offers a unique balance of science, empathy, and hands-on service that aligns with both my strengths and my core values. The ability to not only treat a patient but also comfort them, advocate for them, and help them heal holistically is what makes nursing a deeply fulfilling and meaningful path for me.
My primary goal in nursing is to become a registered nurse and eventually specialize in pediatric or critical care nursing. I aspire to work in environments where I can be both a steady support and a skilled practitioner especially in high-pressure situations that require quick thinking, compassion, and confidence. I want to be the kind of nurse who not only helps save lives but also eases the fear and anxiety that often come with medical situations, especially for children and their families.
One of the accomplishments I am most proud of is maintaining strong academic performance while also working part-time and participating in community service. Balancing these responsibilities has taught me discipline, time management, and resilience qualities that are crucial in nursing. I’ve also completed coursework in biology and human anatomy, which has given me a strong foundation for the medical knowledge I’ll need in nursing school and beyond. Another accomplishment that stands out to me is my involvement in a health science club, where I participated in health fairs and awareness campaigns in my community. This experience helped me understand how preventive education and outreach play an important role in patient outcomes and overall community health.
In terms of medical experience, I have volunteered at a local hospital where I assisted in patient transport, restocking supplies, and providing comfort to patients through friendly conversation. Though not clinical, this experience offered valuable insight into the hospital environment and the importance of every role in a patient’s care journey. I also had the opportunity to shadow a nurse in a pediatric unit for a day, which solidified my desire to work in nursing. Observing the way nurses communicated with both young patients and their families and how they managed care with both professionalism and heart was inspiring.
On a more personal level, I’ve witnessed firsthand how critical nurses are during health crises. A close family member’s long-term illness brought us into regular contact with nurses who became like extended family. Their kindness, attention to detail, and ability to communicate complex information in a comforting way made a lasting impression on me. It helped me realize that nursing is more than a job; it’s a calling.
Overall, my goal is not just to become a nurse but to be a nurse who makes a difference through skill, advocacy, and compassionate care. I believe the path I’ve taken so far has prepared me to succeed in this profession, and I’m excited to continue growing toward that future.

My inspiration to continue my education comes from a strong desire to create a meaningful future—not just for myself, but for those around me. Growing up, I witnessed how limited opportunities can affect individuals and families. I’ve also seen how education can be a powerful tool to break those barriers. These experiences have shaped my commitment to achieving something greater, not only to reach my own goals but to serve as a source of support and inspiration to others.
There have been times when I doubted myself, especially when facing financial or personal challenges. But each time, I reminded myself why I started this journey—to grow, to learn, and to help others through the skills I gain. What keeps me going is the belief that hard work and persistence will open doors, even when the odds seem stacked against me.My plan is to pursue a degree in Nursing, with the ultimate goal of becoming a Nurse Practitioner. I’m particularly passionate about being able to help people who can’t afford help, and change the way we use medicine, and I want to use my education to create positive change.Receiving this scholarship would relieve financial pressure, allowing me to dedicate more time and energy to my studies, internships, and professional development. It would also serve as a reminder that others believe in my potential and that encouragement alone goes a long way in helping students like me succeed.Beyond academics, I also hope to be a role model to others in my community especially young people who may not see many paths forward. I want them to know that with determination, support, and opportunity, their goals are within reach. I hope to one day give back, not just financially, but through mentorship and service, continuing the cycle of support that helped me get here.

My name is Janiyah Salisbury, and I am an 18-year-old high school senior from New York City. I have been applying to multiple scholarships on Bold.org to help increase my chances of being able to go to college without worrying about being in large amounts of debt after I graduate from college. I've applied to over 30 scholarships, hoping I will be able to get enough money to put myself through medical school; every time I apply for a scholarship, I pray that I will win or at least get enough money to be able to lower my tuition. I want to be a Nurse. I'm trying hard to get enough scholarships to pay off my tuition. I've wanted to be a nurse since I was seven years old due to family issues and illnesses I had to face. My Grandfather passed away due to skin cancer. He was my best friend. We did everything together. I used to visit him in the hospital every day because I wanted to see how much better he was getting, and then he died; I felt hopeless and upset that I could not do anything to help him. A Few years later, I lost my Grandmother due to heart disease; she was the main person trying to help me when my grandfather died. I was lost. I was upset about two of the most influential people in my life dying when I was just a child. I wish I had done more for them. From then on, I studied my most challenging and focused in school to pursue my dream of becoming a Nurse. I want to help those who need help. I want to try my best to help people's family members so they don't have to go through what I went through as a child. This scholarship will help me pursue my dream of becoming a nurse because I want to try my best to help people. When I used to visit my grandparents in the hospital, I used to have great conversations with their doctors. I would ask questions, and they would answer in-depth, and they would always have interesting stories about why they became a doctor and what they had to do to become a doctor. I was so interested in their stories that, to this day, they made me realize I wanted to be a doctor. I hope to be well known for being a great nurse and a great help to my patients. I want to help my community, for example, I would like to open a clinic for people who don't have health insurance because I want to help people who are in need of medical care.
