Success is overrated, it doesn’t mean anything unless you make it mean something. The definition of success has been twisted by society and isn’t about doing what you love anymore. But more about how much money you can make and just how fast you can make it. Success should be about the impact you try to leave on other people while also doing what you have a passion for. Success should be about reaching your goals. But that's not what it means in my world. Success in my world means being able to wake up in the morning, getting out of bed, and living through the day. Everyone wants to be successful, but how will you truly know that you aren’t already? There are different levels of success for everyone. While one person you know may look successful to you in your eyes, like they have all the money in the world, in their eyes, they are nowhere near the tip of success. Success to me means achieving your goal and making an impact on someone every day. Even if your goal is to just get out of bed in the morning. Your success is whatever you think will make you happiest in mine. I say this because a goal is a person’s desired result and the effort they give in life. My goal in life is to be respected, and to be known as an honorable person with a strong work ethic and empathy for others. Neither of my parents has a college degree, I want to create a legacy. I want to be the first generation and pass it down to my kids. I want to prove something to different people, that you can do it even though the system isn’t designed for you to. I grew up in a two-parent household, and although I did, that doesn’t mean I automatically have the money for college. When applying for scholarships it seems as if you have to come from a broken family/home to even qualify to get money for college. I want to go against that and prove that yes I do live with both of my parents, but even though I do I am still a part of a middle-class family. I do not have all the money in the world just because my parents are married. When I get older, I would love to tell my story and help others who have also been in my situation, young black girls and boys who may live with both parents, but because the system says so, they do not need financial aid for college. That is one of my goals, and when I obtain this scholarship, I will be closer to achieving it. When I go to a University, I will major in nursing to work towards earning my Bachelor of Science in Nursing. I would like to obtain my BSN degree to step into a higher leadership position than just an RN. I have chosen to major in nursing because Black African Americans don’t always receive the treatment they need in hospitals because they might be looked at as “not important.” These hospitals and some of the healthcare workers inside of them do not take us seriously, and I want to change that. I want to show people who look like me that their health is just as important as anyone else's. I want to care for someone just as much as I would like someone to care for me. When I have achieved these goals, that will mean I have become truly successful.
