Ethel Hayes Destigmatization of Mental Health Scholarship
In 2020, I decided to become part of an accelerated Masters Degree Program in Athletic Training in addition to my university's honors program. The demands of my coursework were relentless, and when the world shifted during the pandemic, my coping mechanisms crumbled. Suddenly, the structure that had helped me manage my academic life was gone, and I found myself in a cycle where 2-minute breaks felt like a luxury. My routine became an unyielding loop of studying, eating, and sleeping—leaving me with little room to breathe. As I immersed myself deeper into this cycle, panic attacks became a frequent visitor, overwhelming me and leaving me both mentally and physically drained. It was a dark period in my life, and I felt trapped in a never-ending spiral of exhaustion, confusion, and self-doubt. However, this time of struggle also became the catalyst for change. It was a turning point, one that I would later look back on as both a challenge and a gift. In the midst of this chaos, I made one of the hardest yet most important decisions of my life: I reached out to my campus’s counseling office. Admitting that I was struggling and seeking help required vulnerability, but it marked the beginning of my journey from merely surviving to truly living. With the support of my counselor, I learned how to reframe my mindset. I discovered the immense value in taking breaks and re-engaging with life outside of my studies. I reconnected with friends, rediscovered my love for reading, and worked on establishing a healthy sleep schedule. I made exercise a priority again, recognizing its power to clear my mind and restore balance to my body. These changes weren’t just practical; they were transformative, teaching me the importance of self-care and mental well-being in a way I had never understood before. As I became more in tune with my own health, I found that I had become a more empathetic person—both in my personal relationships and in my academic pursuits. I began to understand that mental health is just as integral as physical health, and I want to carry this mindset forward in my future career. My experiences have shaped my aspiration to become a physical therapist who not only addresses the physical needs of my patients but also appreciates and supports their mental well-being. I believe that true healing involves understanding the whole person, and I hope to contribute to this holistic approach in my future practice. Ultimately, my struggles with mental health have deepened my sense of compassion and commitment to helping others. They have shown me the importance of resilience, the power of seeking help, and the value of finding balance in life. This journey has not only shaped who I am today but also who I aspire to become—someone who supports others through their challenges and helps them reclaim their sense of well-being, just as I have.
    Bulkthreads.com's "Let's Build Together" Scholarship
As I pursue my education to become a physical therapist, I am working to build a career that not only empowers individuals but also contributes to the health and well-being of my community. Physical therapy stands out to me because of its holistic and personalized approach to care. Unlike many medical fields that may focus solely on treating a condition or injury within a 15 minute time frame, physical therapy allows me to see the person as a whole—understanding their unique goals, challenges, and circumstances. This diverse and dynamic field provides an opportunity to continuously learn and grow while making a tangible difference in people’s lives. One of the key reasons I chose this path is because of the ability to have a direct, positive impact on someone’s life. When a patient walks through the door, it is not just their injury that matters, but also their emotional and psychological state. I want to build a career where I’m not just rehabilitating muscles or joints but helping people regain their independence, confidence, and quality of life. Every patient presents a new challenge and a chance to build a personalized plan that reflects their needs, whether it’s recovering from surgery, overcoming chronic pain, or improving mobility. Beyond individual care, I am committed to building a culture of proactive health care within my community. I believe that physical therapy has the potential to shift the focus from reactive treatments to preventative care. By educating people on the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, promoting injury prevention, and empowering patients to take an active role in their health, I hope to foster a mindset where everyone is proactive about their well-being. This mindset is essential for not only improving physical health but also creating a more resilient and self-sufficient community. In addition to building my career, I am dedicated to cultivating relationships with my patients, colleagues, and peers. Physical therapy requires strong communication skills, empathy, and teamwork, and I am eager to develop these skills as I advance in my education. I believe that strong, supportive relationships can help patients heal more effectively and inspire them to continue on their journey toward better health. In the future, I hope to be a trusted and compassionate physical therapist who not only helps individuals recover from their injuries but also encourages my community to take control of their health. By building a fulfilling career in this field, I will create lasting positive change—not just for myself, but for those around me.
James B. McKillip Scholarship for Physical Therapy
My name is Janai Crawford, and I am deeply honored to apply for the James B. McKillip Scholarship as I pursue my education in physical therapy. From a young age, I have been drawn to healthcare and helping others, which led me to choose physical therapy as the field I wish to dedicate my career to. I find the diverse opportunities and the holistic nature of this profession truly compelling, and I am excited to contribute to the well-being of others in meaningful ways. My passion for physical therapy began during my teenage years when I volunteered with my therapy dogs. I quickly learned that helping others doesn’t always require grand gestures—sometimes, the simple act of being present with someone can make a profound difference in their lives. The connection I built with the people I worked with showed me that every individual’s journey is unique, and being there to listen, support, and encourage them toward their goals can be just as impactful as any medical intervention. Physical therapy stands out to me because of its personalized and multifaceted approach. The field allows me to see the whole person—not just their injury or condition, but the person as a whole, with their specific goals, challenges, and circumstances. I am excited by the opportunity to create individualized treatment plans, collaborate with other healthcare professionals, and help patients regain their strength, independence, and quality of life. I believe that physical therapy has the power to not only heal the body but also empower our patients to take control of their healthcare journey, and I am eager to play a role in that healing process. As I continue my studies and training, I am driven by the knowledge that physical therapy is a field that continuously evolves, providing endless opportunities for learning, growth, and impact. The diversity within the field is one of the aspects that excites me the most, whether it’s working with athletes recovering from injuries, helping elderly patients regain mobility, or aiding children with developmental challenges. I look forward to exploring these different facets of physical therapy as I move forward in my career, knowing that each opportunity to assist someone on their journey to recovery will be rewarding in its own right. As a physical therapist, I hope to become embedded within my community and would love to have the capability to host monthly clinics to enable community members to make healthy life choices. Some examples of these clinics would include hosting an ACL prevention clinic for youth athletes in the area, establishing a community garden near the local elementary school and connecting the garden with the science curriculum at the school, bringing in a panel of women's health professionals including a pelvic physical therapist to assist women at every life stage understand their healthcare options, etc. I do not just want to be part of the physical therapy field; I want to push the field forward and increase the general public's understanding of our role within the medical community. This scholarship will help me pursue my dream of becoming a physical therapist and making a tangible difference in the lives of others. I am grateful for your consideration and the opportunity to apply for the James B. McKillip Scholarship. Thank you for your time and support. Sincerely, Janai Crawford
