My name is Jamila Whyte & I’m a psychology major at Medgar Evers college. I’m a junior in college pursuing my bachelors degree. I’m 20 years old & wish to be a social worker in the future. I absolutely love kids & I’ve been around them my whole life. I started out babysitting my younger siblings without expectation of compensation. I never knew what I wanted to be. I just knew I wanted to help kids lead a proper & happy childhood. I finally figured out what I wanted to do in my senior year of high school. Since then I’ve seen many documentaries but the one that stuck with me was the Trials of Gabriel Hernandez. That poor child died because social workers neglected to report his abuse. They wanted their shifts to end & just wanted to go home instead of doing their jobs. This isn’t the type of social worker I want to be. I want to be that social worker that is able to empathize & help kids. This is how I hope my future will turn out. Sometimes I’m scared of procrastination. It hasn’t gotten me into serious trouble yet & I hope it never does. If I don’t complete my work on time it can lead to me being behind where I want to be. I plan to remove this block by eliminating all distractions & writing down my due dates for assignments. My goal is to complete assignments a week before the deadline or earlier if possible. Another block I would say I have that stands in the way of my future is my wanting to leave the state I live in after college. I’m unable to leave because after I get my degree I have to stay in the state for some time & put it to use before I can leave. I want to be a social worker in Los Angeles. I’ve been in New York my whole life & the documentary that really motivated me to become a social worker took place in Los Angeles. I know there are people who abuse their power all over the world but everyone has a future where they see themselves being happy & successful in their jobs. Lastly, a situation that may stand in the way of my future is my family. I have plans about my future but not everyone is happy about it. I understand when they say I’d be alone in a new place with no family or anyone to rely on but I really want to take a chance. If I were to get a job out there I don’t see any reason why I shouldn’t take it but I also don’t want to leave my family. It’s a decision that I will be deciding on for the remainder of my time in college.
