My life was structured around clean systems—a survival mechanism forged in the ashes of the childhood apartment fire that had once erased my family’s stability. When you lose everything at seven years old, you learn to appreciate structure. But beneath my desk lurked an anomaly. A visual nightmare. It was a monstrous, chaotic nest of tangled black computer cables. The thick cord for my design monitor was wrapped aggressively around the heavy power brick of my computer. A long internet wire formed a constricting loop around my phone charger, and a stray USB cable was knotted into a tight figure-eight that defied the laws of geometry. Most people would look at a cluster of dusty cords and walk away. It was a triviality. A minor domestic eyesore completely irrelevant to the grand scheme of the world. But to my eyes, it was an intolerable error. In my art portfolio, I created paintings of climate disasters to turn cold environmental data into striking, organized visual stories. My parents immigrated from India to the United States, sacrificing everything to pursue higher education and build a better life for our family. Although financial hardship and systemic barriers have been an undeniable part of our past, my parents always fiercely prioritized our education, instilling in us an unshakeable work ethic. Our resilience was tested when I was just seven years old, as I watched our apartment building burn down in front of my eyes due to a catastrophic gas leak in the garage. Experiencing that level of panic and physical loss firsthand sparked a deep desire within me to spend my life protecting and uplifting others. Rather than letting adversity dictate my future, I channeled this fire into my education, recently graduating as the Valedictorian of Platt Technical High School after completing a rigorous four-year Information Technology program. As a first-generation college student and a minority woman entering the STEM landscape, my overarching career goal is to transform complex technology from an expensive luxury behind a paywall into a universal, accessible tool for community health and social empowerment. My four years at Platt Technical gave me a robust, hands-on foundation in hardware, software, and networking infrastructures. My dedication to using technology as a bridge materialized during my capstone project, which I built entirely from a bedroom in our crowded house. I spent months teaching myself full-stack development to code an ad-free, completely free mini-games website designed for accessibility. I noticed that in many low-income families, different generations are separated by a steep digital divide; younger children are tech-savvy while older relatives feel completely left behind.
