Growing up in Appalachia taught me that the strength of a community is not measured by individual accomplishments, but by the willingness of its people to show up for one another. I have carried this belief throughout my life, and it shaped how I approach education, service, and my future career in veterinary medicine. To me, selflessness is not about grand gestures or recognition. It is about choosing to invest your time, energy, and compassion into helping others, even when there is nothing to gain personally. I strive to embody selflessness by recognizing that the opportunities I have been given carry a responsibility to make those opportunities more accessible to others. One of the most meaningful ways I have practiced this belief was through my work with The Arc of Southside, where I helped advocate alongside individuals with disabilities for greater access to care. This experience taught me that serving others is not about deciding what is best for them, but listening to their experiences, respecting their autonomy, and helping ensure their voices are heard. I learned that advocacy requires patience, understanding, and a willingness to stand beside others as they navigate barriers that should not exist in the first place. I have carried these lessons into veterinary school, where I continue to seek opportunities to support others despite the demands of my own education. As a Student Ambassador at Lincoln Memorial University College of Veterinary Medicine, I dedicate time to welcoming prospective students, answering questions, and encouraging those who may doubt whether they belong in this profession. I understand how overwhelming pursuing higher education can feel, especially for students from rural communities. If sharing my experiences, including my struggles, helps even one student feel more confident pursuing their dreams, then that time has been well spent. I believe selflessness is often demonstrated through these seemingly small moments of encouragement, when we choose to make someone else's journey a little less intimidating. My dedication to helping others also guides my research in One Health and disaster resilience. Rather than pursuing research solely for academic recognition, I am interested in understanding how Appalachian communities can become more resilient in the face of disasters. I believe the knowledge we gain through education should ultimately serve people beyond ourselves, particularly those whose needs and experiences are often overlooked. Perseverance has been an equally important part of my journey. Veterinary school has challenged me academically, emotionally, and personally, and there have been moments when continuing forward required more determination than confidence. However, I refuse to let temporary setbacks outweigh the purpose behind my education. I did not pursue veterinary medicine simply to earn a degree or achieve personal success. I chose this path because I believe I can use my education to make a meaningful difference in the lives of animals and the people who depend on them. Ultimately, I hope to return to Appalachia and dedicate my career to serving the communities that shaped me. I want to practice veterinary medicine with an understanding that compassionate care must consider not only the patient's needs, but also the circumstances of the people responsible for them. Michael Rudometkin's legacy reflects something I deeply believe: life is not measured solely by grades, titles, or accomplishments, but by the relationships we build and the people we help along the way. I hope to embody that legacy by continuing to show up for others, using my opportunities to advocate for those facing barriers, and measuring my success by the difference I make rather than the recognition I receive.

My passion for veterinary medicine began with a simple love for animals. Yet, as I have grown both personally and professionally, I have come to understand that this career is about so much more than the patients we treat. Behind every animal is a person, a family, or a community whose life is intertwined with its well-being. Veterinary medicine provides a unique opportunity to care for "both ends of the leash", and that understanding has become one of the greatest motivations behind my pursuit of this profession. Growing up in Appalachia, I witnessed the importance of animals in rural communities. Whether they are beloved companions, working partners, or livestock that support a family's livelihood, animals play an irreplaceable role in the lives of the people who care for them. I have always wanted to make a difference in the lives of animals, but my experiences working in veterinary medicine have shown me that the greatest impact often comes from the relationships we build with their people. One of the most influential people in shaping this perspective has been the head veterinary technician at the rural clinic where I work. When I first entered the clinic, I expected to learn how to restrain animals, administer vaccines, and develop the clinical skills necessary to become a veterinarian. What I did not expect was to find a mentor who would teach me just as much about compassion, confidence, and the importance of human connection. She taught me that being a good veterinary professional extends far beyond technical ability. I have watched her navigate stressful emergencies with a calm demeanor, advocate for patients who cannot speak for themselves, and treat clients with patience and understanding, even during the most challenging moments. She has demonstrated that compassion does not have to be extraordinary to be meaningful. Sometimes, it is as simple as listening to a worried owner, offering encouragement when someone feels overwhelmed, or taking a few extra moments to ensure a client understands their animal's care. Perhaps most importantly, she extended that same compassion to me. She believed in my abilities before I fully believed in them myself, encouraged me through moments of uncertainty, and reminded me that kindness and authenticity are strengths rather than weaknesses. Through her mentorship, I began to recognize the kind of veterinarian I hope to become: someone who makes others feel supported, respected, and understood. As I continue my veterinary education, my aspirations have grown beyond providing excellent medical care. I hope to return to Appalachia and serve the rural communities that helped shape me. I recognize that geographic isolation, financial limitations, and other barriers can make veterinary care difficult to access. I want to approach these challenges with empathy rather than judgment, working alongside clients to provide thoughtful, practical care that respects both their animals' needs and their individual circumstances. My growing interest in One Health has further strengthened my belief that the well-being of animals, people, and their shared environment cannot be separated. I hope to use my education not only to improve the lives of individual patients, but also to contribute to healthier, stronger rural communities. Ultimately, I hope to carry forward the compassion my mentor has shown me. I want to be a veterinarian who provides excellent medicine, advocates for animals, and recognizes the humanity behind every client interaction. If I can leave my patients healthier, their people feeling heard, and my community stronger than I found it, then I will consider that a career well spent.

When people ask me why I want to become a veterinarian, my answer has never been simply, "Because I love animals." Sure, I do, but so do millions of others. What truly inspired me was seeing the unique bond between people and their dogs while growing up in rural Southwest Virginia. Dogs were never just pets there; they were family, friends, and loyal companions. When people ask why I want to be a veterinarian the answer has never been, "Because I love animals." Of course I do, but so do millions of other people. What drew me to veterinary medicine was watching the relationship people had with their dogs growing up in rural Southwest Virginia. Dogs were never "just dogs" where I am from. They work cattle, ride in truck seats, sleep on front porches, and somehow always know when someone had a bad day. They are family in every sense of the word. Watching that bond made me realize early on that I wanted a career where I could protect it. Veterinary school has only strengthened that feeling. During my first year, I brought home Moose, my Golden Retriever. Raising him while learning veterinary medicine has been one of the best parts of my education. Every lecture about orthopedics, genetics, or oncology suddenly became personal because I wasn't just learning about a breed anymore... I was learning about my dog. Knowing what Golden Retrievers are predisposed to has changed the way I think about preventative medicine. Instead of waiting for problems, I think about how to keep Moose healthy for as many years as I can. That's one of the biggest reasons I value responsible breeding. To me, responsible breeding isn't about creating the "perfect" dog or preserving a certain look. It's about preserving healthy dogs with predictable temperaments, sound genetics, and the qualities that made people fall in love with those breeds in the first place. Ethical breeders invest in health testing, study pedigrees, and make difficult decisions because they genuinely care about improving the next generation. As a future veterinarian, I see that as a partnership. Veterinarians and responsible breeders ultimately want the same thing... healthier dogs. I also believe purebred dogs deserve to be preserved because they represent generations of history and purpose. Many of the breeds I grew up around were developed to work, whether that meant gathering cattle, retrieving game, or simply being a dependable companion after a long day. Preserving those breeds means preserving the traits that allowed them to fill those roles while doing everything we can to reduce inherited disease. Those two goals shouldn't compete with each other rather they should go hand in hand. After graduation, I plan to return to rural practice, where I'll care for everything from family pets to working dogs. I hope to build relationships with owners and breeders based on education, honesty, and trust. I want to help families understand why health testing matters, encourage breeding decisions that prioritize long-term welfare, and celebrate the incredible bond people share with their dogs. Whenever I picture the kind of veterinarian I hope to become, Moose is usually somewhere in the image. He's reminded me that every pedigree represents far more than a bloodline. Behind it is a family who loves that dog, a breeder who shaped the future of the breed, and a veterinarian trusted to keep that dog healthy. Being part of that partnership is exactly why I'm pursuing this profession.

When most people hear "Ehlers-Danlos syndrome," they do not immediately see the hours of preparation, planning, and determination that happen behind the scenes. Quite honestly, they do not even see how physically debilitating an average day is for someone with my diagnosis. Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) has affected nearly every part of my educational journey, from chronic pain and joint instability to fatigue and injuries that are often invisible to those around me. Although my condition presents daily challenges, it has never changed my commitment to becoming a veterinarian. Veterinary medicine is known as one of the most physically demanding healthcare professions. Long hours on my feet, lifting and restraining animals, and developing surgical skills require physical endurance that I cannot take for granted. Throughout my education, I have learned to adapt rather than give up. I plan my schedule carefully, prioritize physical therapy and recovery, advocate for reasonable accommodations when necessary, and have learned to recognize the difference between pushing through discomfort and protecting my long-term health. These strategies have allowed me to continue succeeding academically while preparing for a career that I have dreamed about for years. Living with hEDS has also strengthened qualities that will make me a better veterinarian. Experiencing chronic pain has deepened my empathy for patients and clients facing difficult diagnoses. It has taught me patience, perseverance, and the importance of listening to concerns that may not be immediately visible. As someone who understands what it feels like to have an "invisible illness," I hope to provide compassionate care not only to animals but also to the people who love them. The summer before starting veterinary school, I underwent medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction. This came after years of recurrent knee dislocations during my cheerleading career, and is when I ultimately got my diagnosis of hEDS. Nevertheless, I was determined to begin school as strong as possible and viewed the surgery as an opportunity to regain stability before entering one of the most physically demanding healthcare professions. Although my path into veterinary medicine has required more physical and mental adjustments than I ever expected, my diagnosis has only strengthened my determination to continue pursuing the career I have worked so hard to achieve. My journey has never been defined by a single obstacle. It is ever-changing as I continue learning to overcome new ones as they arise. There have been days when pain, fatigue, or injury made the path ahead feel uncertain, yet each challenge has reinforced my determination to continue. My faith has been a constant source of strength, reminding me that setbacks do not define my future. With the support of my family, my husband, and my community, I have continued moving forward one step at a time. Receiving this scholarship would help reduce the financial burden of veterinary school and allow me to focus more fully on my education and clinical training. Rather than worrying about how to cover another semester's expenses, I could dedicate more time to developing the knowledge and skills needed to serve my future patients. My goal is to become a veterinarian who returns to a rural, underserved community where access to animal healthcare is limited. This scholarship is an investment in a future veterinarian who understands resilience firsthand and is committed to using that experience to serve others with compassion and excellence.

There I was, twenty years old, sitting in a classroom that felt big enough to swallow my entire high school. Looking around, I saw classmates from every corner of the country unified only by the goal of becoming a veterinarian. In that moment, I could not help but to see that God placed me where I needed to be. My story began in a small rural town in Appalachia, where opportunities often felt limited but community never was. I was raised surrounded by hardworking people who believed in showing up for one another, and that gave me grit long before I ever graced a college campus. From the moment I was old enough to work, I did. I knew that higher education would only be possible if I helped pay for it myself, so I balanced work alongside school while consistently applying to scholarships. During my undergraduate years, it was almost expected to see me working anywhere from two to four jobs. At this same time, I served as captain of my university's competition cheerleading program, volunteered with The Arc of Southside supporting individuals with disabilities, and gained veterinary experience that solidified my career path. None of it was easy, but every long day pushed me a step closer to the future God has planned. That determination finally paid off when I was accepted into veterinary school after just three years of college. What should have been one of the happiest moments was vastly overshadowing by the reality of professional school tuition. Veterinary medicine is one of the most expensive healthcare professions to enter, and while the acceptance was a dream come true the sheer cost became a challenge of it own. Even now, I continue searching for every opportunity to lessen the burden. I have held jobs including graduate assistant, veterinary assistant, and research assistant. My husband has also made countless sacrifices, working full-time to support our family while I pursue this degree. Even now, I continue searching for every opportunity to lessen that burden. I work as a graduate assistant, veterinary assistant, and research assistant whenever possible, knowing that every paycheck helps me move one step closer to graduation. My husband has also made countless sacrifices, working full-time to support our family while I pursue this degree. His belief in me has never wavered, and together we've learned to celebrate small victories, trust each other through uncertainty, and keep moving forward one semester at a time. Above all else, our home is grounded in faith. There have been moments when the path ahead seemed impossible to see, but time and time again we've found peace in believing that God will continue to make a way, even when we can't yet see where the road leads. My journey to veterinary school has never been defined by having the easiest path. Instead it has been defined by perseverance, sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to serving others. Every obstacle has strengthened my resolve, and every challenge has reminded me exactly why this dream is worth chasing. If my journey has taught me anything, it's that success isn't defined by overcoming one obstacle. I believe it is built by continuing to move forward through a series of them. Every chapter has brought a new challenge, whether it was balancing multiple jobs, navigating the financial realities of higher education, adapting to the demands of veterinary school, or walking through seasons of personal loss while trying to stay focused on my goals. Yet with each challenge, I've found another reason to keep going. My faith has been my foundation through every uncertainty. Even when the next step wasn't clear, I've trusted that God would provide the strength, opportunities, and people I needed exactly when I needed them. Looking back, I can see His guidance in every door that has opened and every person who has believed in me along the way. Receiving this scholarship would not only ease the financial burden of pursuing my veterinary degree, but it would also allow me to devote more time and energy to becoming the kind of veterinarian my community deserves. My goal has always been to return my education to others by serving rural and underserved communities with compassion, integrity, and excellence. I know there are still challenges ahead, but I also know I will meet them with the same perseverance, faith, and determination that have carried me this far. I would be deeply grateful for your investment in my education and in the future impact I hope to make through veterinary medicine.

I grew up being told I was “just flexible.” I could do the splits, pop my shoulder in and out, and bend in ways that made people laugh, but it never felt like a gift. For years, I was brushed off by doctors, coaches, and even myself when I described the chronic pain, fatigue, and injuries I experienced. It wasn’t until much later right before an invasive knee surgery, after countless joint dislocations, daily migraines, and a growing list of digestive issues—that I was diagnosed with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS). That delay in diagnosis made everything harder. Without proper guidance or care, I pushed myself through intense physical activity and academic pressure, believing that what I was experiencing was normal or somehow my fault. By the time I understood what was happening, I was managing a full load of chronic symptoms; knee instability, GERD, migraine attacks, and frequent subluxations on top of the everyday challenges of school. But this journey has given me more than just a medical vocabulary and a high pain tolerance. It’s given me grit, creativity, and purpose. I’ve learned to adapt quickly, find unconventional solutions, and advocate not just for myself, but for others who may be silently suffering. My lived experience navigating an invisible disability has made me deeply empathetic toward the challenges others face, especially when they don’t “look sick.” This perspective has shaped how I view veterinary medicine, particularly in rural communities where care is often limited. In these areas, food animals aren’t just livestock they’re central to families’ survival and stability. When a cow gets sick, it’s not just a loss of income it can be the difference between feeding a family or going without. And just like with my own health journey, I’ve seen how delayed access to proper care often leads to worsened outcomes. My goal is to practice rural veterinary medicine that centers both compassion and accessibility. I want to create sustainable care models that reach underserved areas, support food animal producers, and help bridge the gap between animal health and human health. I see veterinary medicine not just as a science, but as a public service, especially when it comes to the interconnectedness of food security, rural economies, and One Health principles. Living with hEDS has taught me how to keep showing up even when things hurt, to ask the hard questions, and to build community through care. It’s shown me how valuable early intervention, patient education, and holistic care can be, and how devastating it is when those things are missing. These are lessons I carry with me into every farm visit, every classroom, and every goal I set for my future. I may have a bendy body, but my determination is rock solid. And with that, I’m ready to serve communities that need not only a vet, but someone who truly understands what it means to keep going when the odds are stacked against you.

Community service has always been at the heart of my personal values, and it’s this passion that drives both my educational and career goals. Throughout my life, I’ve had the privilege of working with individuals with disabilities at the Arc of Southside, a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering people with disabilities. This experience has given me a profound understanding of the importance of compassion, accessibility, and the human connection, especially when it comes to people’s well-being. Now, as a veterinary student, I’m focused on translating these same values into my future career. The healthcare disparities faced by marginalized communities, including individuals with disabilities, have always stood out to me. At the Arc, I saw firsthand how the right support and care could empower individuals to lead fuller, healthier lives. Yet, many of these people face significant barriers to healthcare, including veterinary care for their service animals or pets, which play such a critical role in their daily lives. This has deepened my resolve to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, where I can combine my passion for service with my love for animals. My career goal is not only to care for animals but also to advocate for the people who depend on them. I want to work with underserved communities, providing access to veterinary care and working alongside healthcare professionals to improve the well-being of both people and their animals. Whether it’s offering low-cost care for service animals, educating communities on the benefits of proper pet care, or partnering with organizations that serve individuals with disabilities, I plan to make a difference by extending my work in community service to my veterinary career. My work at the Arc of Southside has also taught me the importance of tailored support—whether it’s creating accessible spaces or offering personalized care, understanding the unique needs of each individual is key to creating positive, lasting impact. I intend to carry this same principle into my future practice by ensuring that my services are accessible and adapted to the specific needs of each community I serve, particularly those facing socioeconomic or health challenges. Through this scholarship, I would gain the support needed to further my education in veterinary medicine, where I plan to continue making a positive impact by applying the same commitment to service that has always been at the core of my work with people with disabilities. I am driven by the opportunity to contribute to both human and animal health and well-being, and I am excited about the potential to integrate my background in community service into my veterinary career to create a better, more equitable future.

I was raised in a small rural town in Southern Virginia where folks wave from their porches, everybody knows your dog’s name, and the women are a force to reckon with. From a young age, I saw women holding families together, running farms, serving their churches, and getting it all done with little recognition. But when it came to careers in science or medicine, there were fewer examples to follow. I’m now a veterinary student, and every single day I carry with me the lessons from those women; resilience, grace under pressure, and grit. I chose veterinary medicine not only because I love animals (and I do, deeply), but because I see it as a way to serve both animals and the people who love them, especially in communities like the one I grew up in. My goal is to return to rural practice after graduation, where access to veterinary care is limited and where people still drive two counties over to get help for a sick cow or a family dog. Veterinary medicine is made out to be all women and while overall that may be true still a male dominated field in many rural areas, especially in large animal work. I’ve been told I’m “too small” or “too soft-spoken” for this job, but those words never stopped me. They pushed me harder. I’m here to show young girls back home that there’s power in kindness, strength in knowledge, and that being a woman in STEM isn’t just possible; it’s necessary. I believe deeply in the power of mentorship, especially for women. As I advance in my career, I plan to create opportunities for girls in rural communities to explore large animal veterinary science and STEM. Whether through school visits, shadowing programs, or summer internships, I want to be the person I didn’t have growing up, the one who says “You belong here” and means it. Receiving this scholarship would allow me to focus more fully on my studies and community outreach, instead of being weighed down by the financial stress that comes with graduate school. But more than that, it would be a reminder that women’s dreams matter, and that supporting one woman uplifts many. I am committed to using my education not just for personal success, but as a way to make a difference; to empower, to serve, and to lead the next generation of strong, smart, and unstoppable women.

Growing up in the quiet countryside of Southside Virginia, I didn’t have access to state science fairs, university robotics clubs, or summer programs focused on science, technology, engineering, or math. What I did have was a love for animals, a curious mind, and a strong-knit community that taught me the value of hard work and helping others. I spent my childhood outside playing with any animal that crossed my path, following my granddad through the pasture, and eventually shadowing our town’s vet. That’s where I realized that veterinary medicine was where my heart belonged. As a woman from a rural area pursuing a degree in veterinary medicine, I have faced challenges that go beyond academics. Resources have always been limited, and access to mentors or advanced STEM opportunities was rare. But those limitations gave me grit and a passion to beat the odds. They taught me how to solve problems creatively and how to keep going even when the path ahead seemed tough. They also helped me appreciate the importance of community, especially in a profession like veterinary medicine that often revolves around trust and relationships. Starting vet school was a dream come true, but it came with an unexpected emotional and financial weight. The coursework is rigorous, but so is the financial pressure. Scholarships like this make a real difference. They offer more than just financial help. They offer peace of mind. They remind me that people believe in what I’m working toward and are willing to invest in that journey. This year, I adopted Moose, a golden retriever who has brought joy and balance into my life during one of the most demanding seasons. He reminds me every day why I chose this path. Moose has been a living reminder that animals are not just patients; they are family. And the people who love them deserve a veterinarian who is knowledgeable, compassionate, and deeply committed to their well-being. After graduation, I plan to return to a rural area like the one I came from. I want to provide high-quality veterinary care to communities that are often underserved. I also want to mentor young girls who love science and animals, especially those who may not yet believe that they belong in a field like this. This scholarship represents more than funding for school. It symbolizes the support of a broader community that wants to see women thrive in STEM. I am incredibly grateful and even more determined to pay it forward.

Back home in rural Southern Virginia, dogs aren’t just pets; they are family farmhands, hunting buddies, and sometimes even the best therapist you’ve ever had. I grew up surrounded by working cattle dogs and perfect purebred pets. Through them, I learned love, responsibility, and the deep bond between humans and animals. That’s what sparked my dream of becoming a veterinarian. This year, I finally brought home a dog of my own, Moose, a golden retriever I got during my first year of vet school. He’s all paws and personality and calms my nerves better than any stress-relief tactic I’ve learned in school. But more than that, Moose has given me a front-row seat to the importance of preserving purebred dogs, not just for their beauty or popularity, but for their health, their purpose, and their place in people’s hearts. Purebred dogs offer predictability in temperament, health, and behavior, a blessing for families and a critical advantage for veterinarians. Knowing that Goldens like Moose are prone to certain conditions, like cancers or hip dysplasia, I can tailor his care early on. That same understanding helps me serve future clients more thoughtfully, offering proactive guidance rooted in breed-specific knowledge. Whether screening a Cavalier for heart murmurs or a Lab for joint health, preserving these breeds helps us do better medicine. But there’s more to it than science. These breeds represent history, heritage, and hard work. Folks in my community have relied on these dogs for generations to hunt, guard livestock, or simply sit quietly on the porch after a long day. Maintaining healthy, purpose-bred dogs means preserving part of our culture. It’s about honoring that legacy by supporting ethical breeding practices, genetic screening, and responsible ownership that prioritize the health and welfare of the dogs. As a veterinary student and proud golden retriever owner, I’m committed to that mission. I want to be the vet who advocates for breeders doing it right, educates owners on the importance of health screenings, and helps ensure that families, whether in small towns like mine or big cities, can find a companion who’s healthy, happy, and a perfect fit for their lives. Purebred dogs, like Moose, aren’t just animals; they’re living history. They deserve our respect, care, and commitment to a future where their health and purpose are protected for generations.

Starting vet school was a dream come true, but it also became the catalyst for one of the most transformative realizations of my life: my diagnosis of ADHD. I had always thought of myself as someone who was easily distracted, a perpetual daydreamer with bursts of intense focus. But it wasn’t until the demands of vet school—constant deadlines, intensive studying, and high-stakes clinical work—exposed the gaps in my ability to organize, prioritize, and manage time that I sought professional help. My ADHD diagnosis was both a revelation and a relief. Finally understanding how my brain works brought clarity to years of academic and personal struggles. My challenges weren’t about laziness or lack of discipline, as I had sometimes feared; they stemmed from a neurodevelopmental condition that influences how I process information and respond to the world around me. While the diagnosis provided answers, it also meant rethinking how I approached both school and life. ADHD affects my academic life in complex ways. The fast-paced and detail-oriented nature of vet school can feel overwhelming when I struggle to sustain attention during lectures or manage the ever-growing to-do list. Deadlines sometimes sneak up on me, and shifting between tasks can feel like climbing a mountain. However, with this understanding came an opportunity to develop strategies tailored to my brain’s unique wiring. I actively prioritize my mental health to manage my ADHD and thrive in this demanding environment. Time management tools like color-coded planners and digital reminders keep me organized, while the Pomodoro Technique helps me break tasks into manageable chunks. I also make time for regular exercise and mindfulness practices, which have significantly improved my ability to focus and manage stress. Seeking accommodations, such as quiet testing environments and extended deadlines when necessary, has been transformative, reducing anxiety and allowing me to perform at my best. My diagnosis has also reshaped my personal life. I now approach relationships with greater transparency, communicating openly about my challenges and setting boundaries when I need time to recharge. I’ve learned to give myself grace on the tough days while celebrating the strengths ADHD brings to my life. My creativity, energy, and ability to hyper-focus on areas I’m passionate about are assets that enhance my ability to connect deeply with the animals I care for and approach problem-solving with fresh perspectives. ADHD has taught me resilience, self-awareness, and adaptability—qualities I know will make me a compassionate and effective veterinarian. It has also given me a unique ability to empathize with others who face challenges, whether they are people or the animals we serve. Learning to navigate the world with ADHD has not been without its difficulties, but it has made me stronger, more resourceful, and deeply committed to my goals. By embracing my ADHD and seeking out strategies to support my success, I’ve turned what once felt like a barrier into a source of strength. My journey has been about learning to work with my brain, not against it, and finding ways to thrive in the face of challenges. I am proud of how far I’ve come and excited for the future, knowing that the same determination and creativity that have guided me through vet school will continue to shape my path forward.

In contemporary discourse, "my truth" often refers to an individual's subjective beliefs, perspectives, or experiences that they hold to be valid and true for themselves. This concept has gained popularity in a cultural context that emphasizes personal autonomy and the diversity of human experiences. It suggests that truth can be relative and vary from person to person based on their unique circumstances and interpretations. However, from a biblical perspective, truth is understood as objective, eternal, and grounded in the character of God. In John 14:6, Jesus declares, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Here, Jesus identifies Himself as the embodiment of truth, indicating that truth is not merely a subjective construct but an absolute reality that finds its source in God Himself. Throughout Scripture, truth is portrayed as a foundational attribute of God's nature. Psalm 119:160 affirms, "The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever." This verse emphasizes that the entirety of God's Word is truth—His commands, promises, and teachings are all expressions of His unchanging and eternal truth. The concept of "my truth," in contrast, can lead to relativism, where truth is viewed as variable and dependent on personal perspectives or cultural norms. This stands in stark contrast to the biblical view of truth as universal and objective, transcending individual opinions or experiences. Understanding the cultural and historical context of biblical passages is crucial for interpreting the concept of truth accurately. For instance, when examining Jesus' teachings or the writings of the apostles on truth, it is essential to consider the worldview and circumstances of the original audience. This context helps to grasp the intended meaning of these passages and apply them faithfully in today's context. As Christians, aligning our lives with God's truth involves seeking to understand and apply His Word faithfully. This means recognizing Scripture as the authoritative standard by which all beliefs and perspectives should be evaluated. It provides believers with a firm foundation amidst the diversity of opinions and ideologies in the world, guiding them in discerning truth from falsehood and living according to God's will. In summary, while "my truth" emphasizes personal perspectives and experiences, God's truth as revealed in Scripture serves as an unwavering and unchanging standard. Embracing God's truth not only anchors our faith but also guides our understanding of reality, morality, and purpose in a world where subjective truths can vary widely. As followers of Christ, we are called to uphold and proclaim His truth with humility, grace, and unwavering conviction, knowing that it alone leads to eternal life and communion with the Father.

My journey with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) has profoundly shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations, presenting both challenges and transformative growth. EDS, a connective tissue disorder that affects my mobility with frequent painful dislocations, has been a constant test of my physical, mental, and emotional resilience throughout my life. Navigating the complexities of EDS has taught me invaluable lessons in patience, persistence, and adaptability. Each day presents its own challenges, requiring me to approach life with resilience and a steadfast determination to overcome obstacles. Recently, undergoing MPFL (Medial Patellofemoral Ligament) surgery to address chronic knee dislocations marked a particularly challenging chapter in my journey. The experience was characterized by intense pain and a prolonged recovery period, yet it reinforced my belief in the power of empathy and understanding. This ordeal deepened not only my compassion towards myself but also towards others navigating their own health battles. In terms of relationships, my journey with EDS has underscored the importance of cultivating meaningful connections based on mutual support and understanding. My friends and family have been unwavering pillars of strength, standing by me through the highs and lows of managing my health. Their support has been instrumental in bolstering my resilience and fueling my aspirations. As cheer captain during my college years, assuming a leadership role despite physical limitations was a source of immense pride and personal growth. Leading by example, I demonstrated determination and teamwork, emphasizing inclusive leadership that recognized and leveraged the strengths of every team member, regardless of their individual challenges. My career aspirations have been profoundly influenced by my experiences with EDS. Despite its physical demands, my passion for animals and their welfare has remained unwavering. This commitment has driven me to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, inspired by a desire to help animals facing health challenges. One sunny afternoon when I was ten years old, I witnessed a heartbreaking scene in my very own yard. A large dog, injured and whimpering, lay on the grass, seemingly abandoned and in pain. My heart sank at the sight of it, and without a second thought, I rushed over to help. The dog had a deep cut on its leg, likely from a sharp object left carelessly on the ground. Despite feeling scared and unsure, I knew I had to do something. I approached slowly, speaking softly to the dog to reassure it. With trembling hands, I carefully bandaged its injured paw using gauze from my parents bathroom. Seeing the dog relax a bit under my touch gave me a sense of relief and determination. Soon, my parents found me with the dog, and together we rushed the injured pet to the nearest veterinary clinic. At the clinic, the veterinarian commended me for my quick thinking and compassion. She explained the severity of the injury and what needed to be done to help the dog heal. I listened intently, absorbing every word, and asked her many questions about how I could help animals like this professionally in the future. That moment in the park sparked my dream of becoming a veterinarian. From then on, I was determined to do whatever it took to become an individual devoted to veterinary medicine. High school provided me with a transformative opportunity to shadow a local veterinarian. Through this experience, I gained firsthand insight into the complexities of the profession, including the prevalent issue of mental health challenges among practitioners. Witnessing these struggles ignited a dual commitment within me: not only to deliver exceptional care to animals but also to foster a sustainable and supportive environment for my future colleagues. At a time when mental health awareness was just beginning to gain traction in our field, I felt a profound calling to contribute to this crucial dialogue. Entering college as a veterinary assistant, I continued to be inspired by the profound impact of compassionate care and advocacy within the veterinary community. These experiences solidified my aspirations as a future veterinarian. Beyond mastering the technical aspects of veterinary medicine, my goal is to serve as a voice for both my patients and my fellow professionals, advocating tirelessly for their well-being and promoting a positive, inclusive practice environment. Central to my vision is integrating my passion for animal care with a proactive approach to supporting mental health among veterinary professionals. I envision engaging in initiatives that promote well-being, such as mentorship programs, stress management workshops, and fostering open dialogues about the challenges of our profession. By cultivating a culture of empathy and support, I believe we can enhance job satisfaction, mitigate burnout, and ultimately provide higher-quality care for our animal patients. Moreover, I am committed to staying abreast of advancements in veterinary medicine and integrating evidence-based practices into my work. Whether through continuing education, research endeavors, or collaborative projects with peers, I am eager to contribute to the ongoing evolution of veterinary care. In summary, my goal as a future veterinarian is to embody the values of compassion, integrity, and advocacy that have shaped my journey thus far. By striving for excellence in patient care and professional support, I aim to make a meaningful impact on the field of veterinary medicine. I am determined to uphold the legacy of love and wisdom, ensuring that every aspect of my career is imbued with care and dedication.

My journey into veterinary medicine began with a childhood spent surrounded by animals, fostering a deep connection and sense of responsibility towards their care. Growing up in a rural area of Appalachia, I experienced firsthand the joys and challenges of raising both companion animals and cattle. These early experiences ignited my passion for veterinary science, shaping my desire to pursue a career dedicated to the health and well-being of animals. As a 20-year-old veterinary student, my academic and professional goals are centered around becoming a skilled and compassionate veterinarian specializing in mixed animal practice. I am currently enrolled in a rigorous veterinary program, where I am dedicated to mastering both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills necessary to provide comprehensive care to a diverse range of animals. Beyond clinical practice, I aspire to contribute to veterinary research, particularly in areas related to infectious diseases and animal welfare. Professionally, I aim to establish a practice that integrates advanced medical techniques with a strong focus on preventive care and client education. This scholarship award is essential for me to continue my education and pursue my professional aspirations in veterinary medicine. Despite my dedication to academic excellence and part-time jobs, the cost of tuition, textbooks, and clinical training presents a significant financial challenge. This scholarship would provide critical financial support, allowing me to focus more fully on my studies and practical training without the burden of excessive student debt upon graduation. Paying for my education has been a strategic endeavor involving a combination of personal savings, income from multiple part-time jobs, and financial aid. While these resources have helped cover some expenses, they are insufficient to meet the full cost of my education. Securing scholarships and taking out loans are the primary components of my financial strategy. These avenues will ensure that I can afford the necessary educational resources and clinical experiences to become a competent veterinarian. Heavy Metal music holds a special significance in my life, serving as both an outlet for personal expression and a source of inspiration during challenging times. The powerful, energetic sound of Heavy Metal resonates deeply with me, providing a cathartic release from the demands of veterinary medicine. The genre's dynamic rhythms and intricate guitar solos offer a sense of adrenaline and motivation, making it the my go to when I get off a hard shift at the clinic. I have been drawn to this artistry since starting my career in veterinary medicine. More specifically I find myself entranced by artist such as Korn, Limp Bizkit, and Ozzy Osborne in my weakest moments. As someone who has to work with patients who are voiceless it burdens me to see them in pain or neglectful situations. So, being able to sneak away to scream to my favorite artists has become on of my primary outlets to relieve stress. Beyond its musical appeal, Heavy Metal embodies themes of resilience, individuality, and perseverance—qualities that resonate with my journey in veterinary medicine. Just as Heavy Metal musicians push boundaries and defy conventions in their artistry, I am driven to push myself intellectually and professionally within the veterinary field. Moreover, the lyrical themes often explore profound topics such as human emotions, societal issues, and existential questions, offering a parallel to the ethical dilemmas and emotional connections inherent in veterinary practice. In conclusion, my pursuit of veterinary medicine is fueled by a deep-seated passion for animals, a commitment to excellence in care, and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the field. The scholarship I seek will not only alleviate financial burdens but also empower me to achieve my academic and professional goals without compromise. With this support, I am confident in my ability to make a positive impact in veterinary medicine and uphold the values of compassion, dedication, and innovation that define both my personal journey and the Heavy Metal music that inspires me.

Veterinary medicine is a field dedicated to the health and well-being of animals. It encompasses a wide range of specialties, from small animal care (like dogs and cats) to large animal medicine (such as horses, cows, and even exotic animals), as well as research into diseases that affect both animals and humans. As an incoming Veterinary-Student at LMU-CVM this is something that I have been passionate about for a very long time. I have experienced many sides of STEAM and set upon my place firmly. The impact I hope to make on the world through my education in vet med is multifaceted. Firstly, the commitment to improving animal welfare globally involves not only providing treatment for sick animals but also implementing proactive measures to prevent diseases. This includes promoting vaccination programs to curb the spread of contagious illnesses among both domestic and wild animal populations. Additionally, fostering responsible pet ownership through education campaigns can help reduce the number of stray animals and alleviate the burden on shelters and rescue organizations. Advocating for ethical treatment standards across various industries, such as agriculture, entertainment, and research, is crucial for ensuring that animals are treated with dignity and respect throughout their lives. Secondly, the study and understanding of zoonotic diseases represent a vital area of research within veterinary medicine. The arts and humanities play a crucial role in veterinary medicine by fostering empathy, communication, and ethical decision-making skills, which are essential for building trust and rapport with both animal patients and their human caregivers. Overall, the integration of STEAM disciplines in veterinary medicine allows for holistic approaches to solving problems and improving the health and well-being of animals, humans, and the environment. By leveraging diverse knowledge and skills, veterinarians can make a positive impact on the world by addressing complex challenges and promoting sustainable and ethical practices across various sectors.

Life often presents us with unforeseen challenges that test our resilience and redefine our priorities. Such was the case during my college years when my family faced a series of devastating health crises. It was during my senior year of college when my grandfather's health took a sudden turn for the worse. A robust and jovial man, he had always been a pillar of strength and wisdom in our family. However, the news of his diagnosis of lung cancer cast a shadow of sorrow over our household. As his condition deteriorated quickly, I found myself grappling with a whirlwind of emotions – fear, sadness, and a profound sense of helplessness. Despite the demands of my coursework, I made it a priority to spend as much time as possible with my grandfather during his final days. I treasured our conversations, cherishing every moment and holding onto the memories we had shared over the years. Witnessing his gradual decline was a heartbreaking experience, yet it also served as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing our loved ones while we can. As my family mourned the loss of my grandfather, another blow struck when my aunt received a diagnosis of stage 4 ovarian cancer. The news sent shockwaves through our family, leaving us reeling from the relentless onslaught of illness and loss. Despite the heaviness of my own grief, I resolved to support my aunt in any way I could as she embarked on her grueling treatment journey. Balancing the demands of my academic studies with the emotional toll of my family's health crises was no easy feat. There were moments when I felt overwhelmed and on the brink of despair, questioning how I could possibly carry on in the face of such adversity. Yet, amidst the darkness, I found solace in the unwavering support of my friends, professors, and loved ones, who provided a beacon of light in my darkest hours. As I navigated the complexities of grief and academic pressure, I drew strength from my experiences, learning valuable lessons about resilience, compassion, and the importance of self-care. I realized that while I could not control the circumstances life threw my way, I could choose how I responded to them – with grace, courage, and unwavering determination. Today, as I reflect on those challenging times, I am reminded of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of love to sustain us through even the darkest of days. My grandfather's memory lives on in the lessons he imparted and the love he shared, while my aunt's ongoing battle with cancer serves as a testament to the strength of the human will to survive. In closing, the journey through loss and illness during my college years profoundly shaped my perspective on life and inspired me to embrace each day with gratitude and purpose. While the scars of grief may never fully heal, they serve as a poignant reminder of the preciousness of life and the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Choosing veterinary medicine is a deeply personal decision that stems from my lifelong passion for animals and a desire to make a positive impact on their lives. From a young age, I found solace and joy in the company of animals, and as I grew older, this affinity transformed into a determination to advocate for their well-being. One of the primary reasons I've chosen veterinary medicine is because I believe in the importance of the human-animal bond. Animals play crucial roles in our lives, serving as companions, helpers, and even healers. As a veterinarian, I want to ensure that this bond remains strong by providing the best possible care for animals, thereby enriching the lives of both animals and their human companions. In addition to my love for animals, I am also drawn to the clinical aspects of veterinary medicine. I am fascinated by the challenge of diagnosing and treating a wide range of conditions as my patients are unable to tell me what ails them. By pursuing a career in veterinary medicine, I hope to continually expand my knowledge and skills in order to provide the highest standard of care for my patients. Furthermore, I am deeply committed to making a meaningful impact in the field of veterinary medicine. This includes advocating for animal welfare, promoting responsible pet ownership, and contributing to advancements in veterinary research and education. I aspire to be a voice for animals who cannot speak for themselves and to work towards creating a world where all animals are treated with compassion and respect. On a personal level, my goals include continuously seeking opportunities for professional development and growth, whether through further education, specialized training, or involvement in veterinary organizations and initiatives. I also aim to cultivate strong relationships with my clients and colleagues, fostering a collaborative and supportive environment within the veterinary community. My journey in veterinary medicine is driven by a deep sense of purpose and a genuine desire to make a positive difference in the lives of animals and the people who love them. I am committed to pursuing this passion wholeheartedly and dedicating myself to the service of those who need it most.

At the forefront of veterinary medicine is the animals in which we serve. It is no secret that these patients cannot always communicate their pain, feelings, and needs to us. They do so through actions, and we can understand deeper through bloodwork, radiographs, and other diagnostics. This is why being the voice for my future patients is such a vital role. The decisions we make on their behalf must be done with utmost care. There are many moral quandaries in the veterinary profession in which professionals need to advocate for their patients based on what is best for them. From my experience, I believe that care should be patient-centered and that when research suggests that elective procedures are creating long-term harm, such as in the case of declawing, they should not be performed. Just behind the animals we serve are the providers who service them. If my experience in this field has taught me anything it is that veterinary professionals deserve the same advocacy as our patients. Many times while working as a veterinary assistant, I have had to use resilience to push through. In particular, there was a C-section in which we lost one of the puppies, yet care was still needed to attend to the dam and the surviving puppies, so at the moment, I had to be resilient and continue with my job. In a similar situation, I assisted in euthanizing a patient I was bonded with and walked into a kitten vaccine appointment only moments later. The reality is that I have had to be adaptable and robust in this field because it is so unpredictable. It can take its toll if you cannot stand back and see that even though we lost that puppy, the others came back in six weeks large and full of love, and despite having to euthanize the patient I felt connected to, they were suffering and easing their pain also eased my mind. Through many situations like these, I have learned that even when it is painful, it is worth waiting for the successes. My passion for veterinary science stems from a profound love for animals and a desire to alleviate their suffering. Yet, through working with so many amazing people within this field I can stand back and realize it goes beyond that. I am determined to help veterinary medicine move in a healthy direction for both our patients and the staff. This is a hard field, but I am determined to find the light. In terms of community impact, I believe that my contributions to veterinary medicine can benefit my community in several ways. Firstly, by providing high-quality veterinary care, I can help improve the health and longevity of animals lives, enhancing the bond between pets and their owners and fostering a healthier and happier community. Additionally, by creating a community within my workplace in which fosters laughter and allows my coworkers to feel heard. Lastly, I intend to continue my volunteerism into my professional career and pour back as much as I can into my community. Overall, my experiences in veterinary medicine have shaped my beliefs, relationships, and career aspirations in profound ways. I am passionate about veterinary science because of its potential to make a positive impact on the lives of animals and humans alike. Through my contributions to veterinary science, I hope to uphold the values of compassion, integrity, and excellence while serving my community and advancing the field towards a brighter and more compassionate future.
