Some of the most important lessons I have learned about nursing came from a two-year-old boy who never knew he was teaching me anything. I cared for him while working night shift in pediatrics as a patient care tech. He had cancer and was frequently admitted to the hospital for chemotherapy, sometimes staying for several days before returning home. Many nights, I would arrive shortly after he had finished treatment. By then, most of the medical activity of his day was over, and it was time to get him settled for bed. He was the sweetest, most cuddly little boy and absolutely loved being held. I loved holding him just as much. I would get him ready for bed, bathed him ,pick him up, and rock him until he fell asleep. Some nights, he was not ready to sleep, so we would play together until he tired himself out, and then I would try again. In those moments, he was not simply a two-year-old receiving chemotherapy. He was a little boy who wanted to play, be held, and feel safe. His parents were some of the sweetest, hardest-working people I had met. Because they had to work, they could not always be at the hospital. I could never replace the comfort of his parents, but while they were away, I wanted them to know their baby was with someone who genuinely cared about him. I would always give them a full report of his night whenever they were able to come stop by. He eventually passed away from cancer. Losing him was heartbreaking, and I still miss him. However, caring for him changed my understanding of what it means to care for another person. I could not change his diagnosis or the outcome of his illness, but I could make some of his hardest nights a little softer. I could hold him after chemotherapy, play with him when he could not sleep, and rock him until he felt safe enough to close his eyes. He taught me that nursing is not always about being able to fix what is happening. Sometimes it means being present, providing comfort, and making sure someone feels loved and cared for while they are going through something you cannot change. That is the kind of nurse I hope to become, someone who never becomes so focused on a diagnosis that I forget the person experiencing it. I am currently pursuing my Entry-Level Masters of Science in Nursing, and receiving this scholarship would ease the financial burden of graduate nursing education and allow me to focus more fully on my studies and clinical training. Most importantly, it would help me continue toward a career where I can give other children and families the same compassion and presence that my little patient taught me can mean so much.
