Hello, my name is James Pryor and I currently attend Horry Georgetown Technical College as a Civil Engineering major. I’m currently a sophomore student and graduating in May 2023. Since I have been at this school, I have learned much and matured as a person as well. The experiences I have had over the past 2 years are memorable and helpful for my future. A moment that I cherished since I have been in college is when I received a letter from Horry Georgetown Technical College that I have been placed on the President's list for my first semester of college. When I first attended college, I had the mindset of reaching for the stars and not settling for less. Furthermore, once I found out that I made the list, I was proud but also expected myself to have these accomplishments because of how focus minded I am towards my dreams and goals. The letter wasn’t all that I remembered though out of this moment. I remember the day before school, I was telling myself that I won’t settle for less and I am going to prioritize my schoolwork over most things. Times during the semester, friends invited me to go out, but I rather choose to study for a test that paid off at the end of the semester. My school also had an outside ceremony for the hard-working students that exceeded their obstacles and were selected for the Dean’s and President’s lists. It was very friendly and nice to meet new people and friends at the ceremony as well as get noticed for your achievements. We also got to hear three main speakers talk about their past struggles or achievements they have had since they were at this school and how they pushed over and moved on to be great students at Horry Georgetown Technical College. After that semester I pushed myself to keep this work ethic towards everything in life and continue to accomplish goals and move further and further towards my goals in life. So, realizing that the work ethic I put in, is what comes out was a saying that I experienced to come true. Now, as a sophomore in college, I push myself to the maximum to keep my grades superior to others and focus on myself to reach the goals I have made since a child. I appreciate the opportunity to be selected for this scholarship and hope to talk in the future.

My name is James Pryor and I attend Horry Georgetown Technical College for the Civil Engineering Technology Program. I enrolled into this program in August of 2021. After I finish my program at HGTC, I will be transferring to Coastal Carolina University for the Bachelors of Science in Engineering Science. While enrolled at HGTC for a year and a half, I have been on the presidents lists and have learned so many new things that I will use in the future. My goals in the future are to not just be successful but to be great at the job I love. Ever since I started college, I challenged myself to be the best me by trying complete the best work and be the top of my class. Out of the 8 attributes above listed, I think the best one that describes me the most is my strive for servant leadership. Since I was in middle school, I worked for my grandfathers landscaping business. As I continued to grow and years pass by, I learned new procedures, tricks, and acquired more responsibilities. After awhile, I would have to lead my own crew to certain sites to complete not one job site but a full day of stoping at multiple job sites. I remember multiple days where I would make bad risks and bad business decisions for my crew. Sometimes, I would have someone to guide me the write direction to fix problems, sometimes I didn't. I had to learn the hard way about business decisions and what I can do to increase my decision making skills. At first, I was shy and always relied on someone else's decision but figured out the hard way that sometimes that doesn't work out for the best. My grandfather preached to me the good and bad of business and what sets him apart from other workers and companies. That summer, I learned that thinking and believing in yourself will help you succeed. When you put yourself in great positions to succeed, your life becomes easier. Ever since that summer, I transferred that situation to school and real life situations like studying for classes instead of hanging out late with friends or driving my automobile with caution and not nervous. I believe this scholarship will help me dearly in my future to strive for my goals and I am thankful for the opportunity to sign up for this scholarship.

My name is James Pryor, I attend Carolina Forest High School, Conway, SC. While at Carolina Forest I maintained a GPA of 3.6 while enrolled in all honors classes. My last two years have been spent learning and studying virtually. It has been difficult, and I struggled with calculus, but I made it. I also received the Presidential Award for academic excellence. I was a member of the Carolina Forest Basketball Team. I miss my friends, my teammates, and classmates and the opportunity to share in a senior prom, senior trip, senior day and all the other activities that seniors do. But I realized that the class of 2021 is a class that has learned to endure the storms and adversities of life challenges. While studying virtually I also assisted my younger cousins who were having difficulty with their studies. The community that I live in consists of mostly elderly citizens and college students. Since many of the seniors are familiar with me, I am often asked to assist many of them with their newly acquired electronic devices. I also mow and provide lawn care for many of the seniors in my community as a part of giving back to those that have supported and inspired me. I attend Shekiah Deliverance Church in Conway, SC under the leadership of Bishop Greggory Moody. I work with the youth department and the food outreach committee. We deliver and handout food boxes to those less fortunate in the community. Since I was in middle school, I have strived everyday to complete my dream of becoming a Civil Engineer. This scholarship would help me dearly complete my Associates degree and pass the PE examination. With this scholarship, it would help me buy the books I need for class, the education I need to reach my goal, and help set up my path to becoming an Engineer. My main focus is to become a construction worker that helps construct roads, bridges and buildings. I want to be able to build and expand my community to heights that have never been touched before in history. In my younger years, I had a friend that loved to watch his dad work in the construction field as a Civil Engineer. He said that his dream was to show how we can make this world pretty and acceptable for everyone. I continue to add to my bucket list, while I continue to step into my career field. For example, I want to help build more dams to stop floodings of homes and provide more homeless shelters to help the homeless. I am very grateful to be able to have an opportunity to earn this scholarship. I believe I deserve this scholarship because of the hardwork and dedication I put into my academics towards becoming a Civil Engineer. With the education I have now and the education I aim to get while in college, I believe that I can make a difference in today’s world. I can face challenges bigger than me in this world and help show that anything is possible. I will use this scholarship to help me on this journey to become a Civil Engineer and change lives.

I currently hold a black belt in Jiu Jitsu which I earned while studying at the now closed Myrtle Beach Martial Arts Center. Jiu Jitsu teaches young men and women patience, control, wisdom and mental discipline. I have learned to face disappointment in losing tournaments and I learned how to gain control over any negative thoughts that might cross my mind. I have learned through my study of Jiu Jitsu to put aside any fears and become the self-confident person I am today. I am equipped to face my tomorrows and a future full of hope. I feel that I will be successful in any situation that might arise. While at the Martial Arts Center I was able to assist with the instruction of the younger learners.
