Mental Health Importance Scholarship
Mental health is an important aspect of maintaining one’s health. It affects all areas of life including work, relationships, and subjective well-being. In this sense, good health can lead to overall productivity in society. However, how does one achieve mental health or subjective well-being? Many avenues exist including therapy, exercise, meditation, self-help books, religious events, etc. If there are so many options, how does one decide and determine which method? I feel that it is a combination of various methods that can contribute to success. For example, a professional athlete relies on many resources to achieve optimal performance. With that said, I feel that maintaining mental health requires an individualized, multifaceted approach that utilizes the help of others.
If you were to ask different athletes the secret behind their success, you may receive countless answers. But how does this relate to mental health? Aren’t athletes concerned with their physical performance as opposed to their mental functioning? What if a more realistic view of mental health could be described as including a muscle (the brain) that requires daily exercise? Many components of mental health require practice and repeated attempts. For example, practicing meditation may require several sessions to experience positive results. This may vary from person to person which also shows that practice (or exercising the brain) is key.
It would be safe to say that many athletes experience obstacles and disappointments during their journeys. Athletes continue practicing and honing their skills despite these adversities to achieve success. In my own experience, I needed a mentor that would support me despite my shortcomings. Just like the athlete seeks guidance from a coach, I have had various mentors that have helped me along the way. Knowing that I am not alone has helped in many areas of life. Having a mentor has helped me navigate the difficult times and “ups and downs” in life. Even though this has proven to be helpful, it is not the only approach I have utilized on my journey.
An athlete can have a highly valued coach, but other factors still exist such as practice, dedication, and teamwork. Integrating skills into real-life scenarios can be a daunting task. At times, life can be overwhelming and stressful. In my own experience, I had to ask for help along the way. Learning healthy practices requires building relationships and seeking advice to build these skills. There were many mistakes along the way, but persistence and practice allowed for greater success over time. Furthermore, incorporating these skills during difficult times called for even more effort.
Mental wellness is subject to change and may necessitate various approaches throughout one's life. As the athlete faces adversity, wellness calls for diligence as life continues. To continuously meet these needs, I found in my journey that I could not do it alone. Seeking help from others allowed me to learn new methods and techniques for improving my health. Mental wellness encompasses many dimensions so I had to admit I could not do it alone. Finally, I hope to pass this experience on to others as they embark on their journey to maintaining their mental health.
