My father is a retired Air Force Boom Operator (KC-135). Growing up, there were stretches of my life that I did not get to experience with my dad. Due to the stress of a military family, my parents separated when I was young after my father received orders to transfer to a new base. Although I did not grow up with my dad per se, I have always been proud of his commitment to his service and the sacrifices that he made in his personal life to serve our country. Today, my father is happily retired and is now using his Air Force knowledge and passion to volunteer at an air museum near his home. While his is no longer serving in uniform, he continues to serve the community by being a docent and sharing his passion of aviation to those who visit the museum. One of my fondest memories of my dad during his time in service was when he helped me gain access to the base hospital (March AFB in Riverside, CA) where I was born but had closed. At that time I was pursuing my BFA in Photography at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. My father eventually was stationed back at the base where I was born and was instrumental in helping me to gain access to the then abandoned hospital and later abandoned base housing where we once lived. Experiencing these spaces where I have no memories of, but was photographically documenting was a bonding moment between me and my dad. With this recollection, I was able to visit the room where I was born, the house where we once lived, and the room that I had called my own. Without his guidance, I would not have been able to know where to go and would have approached this project without direction. My father committed much of his adult life to the military. However, his ability to help me gain this access showed me that he was also committed to me as his son and my pursuits as a photographer. Having his company was very meaningful to me and I am thankful to this day for that experience. Now, I am a professional photographer and am working towards a master's degree. My father is retired from the Air Force and those spaces on March Air Force base are no more. But that experience lives on in my photographs and are imbedded as core memories shaping who I am today as an image maker and as a parent myself.
