Sunshine Legall Scholarship
My name is Jamayah Walker, I am a senior at Boston Green Academy. It would be an honor to be awarded this scholarship as it would help me reach my goal of game development by studying different software and programming languages.
The main reason why I've decided to go into game design specifically was to create games for people to enjoy and talk about as a community. It all started in early 2021. It was late into the pandemic, so I had to stay home and do online classes during the 2020-2021 period. During this time, I stumbled upon a YouTube video by someone creating a 3D-Platformer-styled game similar to Super Mario, and Jak and Daxter. This YouTuber was taking aspects and mechanics of those well-loved games and putting them into his creation while tweaking them to make it feel original. This stuck out to me the most, I like these types of video games and wondered if I could do something like that, too. Making something that other people can talk about and have discussions on would be an amazing feeling. I knew it would be hard to develop my own game as I would need to understand programming, but if I could make something like that YouTuber could, it would be worth everything. That Youtuber’s experience catalyzed my drive to learn everything I could about programming and game development. I am excited to continue this journey. Earning this scholarship would help me prepare for the journey and help me be successful in achieving my dream.
During high school, I have proven to be a hard worker, and as of March 2025, I have a 3.81 GPA. This further shows my drive to become better with how much effort I put into my educational benefit, all while taking AP classes in Environmental Science, Pre-Calculus, and AP Lang. After college, I plan on going into game development to create games that appeal to everyone.
This would involve knowledge of coding, and for the past few months, I have taken the initiative to get that experience by taking a few courses, which was possible through a program called Mimo. I have been taking daily courses and earned certificates in languages like Python, HTML, and CSS. During the summers of 2023 and 2024, I have been expanding my experience in coding by working as a Tech Apprentice at Digital Ready. This experience has given me exposure to many different types of activities, such as piloting drones using code with DroneBlocks, exposure to Figma, and UI/UX design, as well as Game Development using Godot, and animation using available 2D sprites.
I have given back to my community by doing 40 hours of community service around my school. I have helped set things up by coming in during summer break before school starts for a new year, I have also volunteered to set up for major school events such as a Halloween haunted house and Thanksgiving dinner, and I have done other jobs like data entry and sorting damaged Chromebooks. This inspired me to make a difference in the world due to how good it felt to stop worrying about my problems and put effort into benefiting the community and its well-being. It inspired me to make a difference because interacting with a community with interests similar to yours is a good way to learn about the world. When making games, I want people to connect about what they like.
