Hello, my name is Jalen Taliaferro, and I am 18 years old. I am a freshman at the University of Memphis. I am studying Earth Sciences, with the intention of pursuing a career in meteorology in the near future.
I attended Memphis Academy of Health Sciences High School, where I graduated as valedictorian with a GPA of a 4.2.
As a kid, I was always fascinated with weather forecasting, as I would enjoy watching my local news stations strictly for the purpose of hearing their different perspectives on the weather conditions for the day. From a young age, I knew that I would want to eventually work in this field, primarily behind the camera.
As a Memphian, we experience some of the most extreme weather events, primarily due to our location. Many of these events are unusual and quite sudden. Because of this, many residents of the city are often unsure or unclear about the potential weather that may occur. I would love to be able to help provide assistance and clarity to the residents of the city by contributing my studies and observations.
Also, it is extremely important for me as a minority. There are very few African American meteorologists in comparison to other demographics. We are clearly underrepresented in the field. By becoming a meteorologist, I feel that I can help break barriers for other African Americans who intend on pursuing the same career.
Any scholarship would greatly help me to achieve my goal of being a successful meteorologist. I am hopeful that I will be able to help change the current state of meteorology.

Bold Study Strategies Scholarship
As a freshman balancing the traditional life of a college student, I've definitely had to acquire new methods to make my life more manageable. One of the most crucial ways that I've done that is by adopting new studying strategies. At the beginning of the fall term of 2021, it was a priority for me to achieve the academic standing that I would need to ensure my prospective career in meteorology. There are a couple tips that are the most significant to me.
For one, I have learned to thoroughly analyze everything that I am reading. In high school, I remember it being so much easier to skim passages to find some main points. While that may work occasionally on certain assignments, it isn't always the most efficient when writing essays. For example, when writing an analytical essay about a book, I must have a fair understanding of what I'm reading before I attempt to explain in detail. I'm sure that professors could easily distinguish the essay of a student who barely read in comparison to one who read thoroughly.
Secondly, I have practiced studying periodically, as opposed to cramming shortly before an exam or assignment is due. In the past, I would often think that I would be able to study heavily the night before an exam. However, in college, I quickly learned that doing so would only hurt my grades. Information is obtained more efficiently when studying over a period of time, as it is constantly on your mind. For example, when I take a math exam, it's best for me to study formulas each day. By cramming them, I could possibly get formulas confused during the test.
Overall, these are a couple of the most efficient tips that I use, and recommend to others to ensure success.
