Growing up, my siblings and I were always on the edge of our seats, eagerly listening to the hilarious and sometimes outrageous stories our dad shared about his time in the U.S. Navy, both during boot camp and while deployed on a nuclear submarine. He always knew how to capture our attention, and his tales, full of pranks, camaraderie, and some lessons learned the hard way, left us laughing for hours. Each story not only gave us a glimpse into life in the Navy but also taught us valuable life lessons about teamwork, perseverance, and the importance of keeping a sense of humor in tough situations. One of the stories that had us in stitches came from boot camp. It involved a classic case of military precision—or, rather, a complete lack of it. My dad told us about the time when one recruit made a simple but critical mistake in his daily routine: he made his bed with a "catch edge." In the strict, high-stress environment of Navy boot camp, making your bed was an art form, and even the smallest mistake could lead to serious consequences. The "catch edge" is when one side of the bed is uneven, leaving a small lip of the blanket that sticks out awkwardly. This recruit had to go to everyone in the company and say "BOO, I'm a catch edge ghost." My dad would laugh as he told us how the recruit couldn’t escape the teasing, and how his failure became a source of bonding among the rest of the crew. It was a great lesson in paying attention to detail and making sure you did things right, but also not taking yourself too seriously when you inevitably made a mistake. Then there were the stories from his deployments, which always kept us on our toes. One particularly hilarious tale involved a prank in the engine room of the nuclear submarine. As the new guys came in, the seasoned sailors would mess with them using the radiation detector, which, in their hands, was more of a joke than a serious tool. They would pretend that the detector was picking up dangerous radiation levels and make the rookies panic, only to burst out laughing once the prank was revealed. One of the funniest (and messiest) stories involved a sanitary tank. Periodically the sanitary tanks must be blown overboard. signs are hung on the doors to the bathrooms that sanitary tanks are being blown overboard, do not use. Well someone, a cook, decided to pull the ball valve after using the bathroom and blew the remaining contents of the tank all over him. He also received the golden flapper award. According to my dad, it was one of the grossest things he had ever witnessed, but it also left everyone in stitches. The crew quickly learned that some things in life are just beyond your control, and the best way to handle them was with laughter and solidarity. These stories not only entertained us but taught us lessons we carried with us into our own lives. According to my dad, it was one of the grossest things he had ever witnessed, but it also left everyone in stitches. The crew quickly learned that some things in life are just beyond your control, and the best way to handle them was with laughter and solidarity.
