Football has given me many lessons, all of which have gone way beyond what happens in the game. Football has taught me about discipline, how to persevere, how to hold myself accountable for what I do, and that no matter how difficult something is or how much I may want to give up, I will always find a way to keep moving forward. Upon graduation from high school, I did not receive any scholarship offers to attend a university and continue my football career. Seeing so many other young men and women continue their football careers while I had to wonder if I still had a football future was tough. There were times during this period of my life when I truly thought my days as a football player were behind me. After considering those thoughts and weighing my options, I decided to attend Clark Atlanta University (CAU) and send my game footage to the defense coaches. When I arrived at CAU and tried out for the football team as a "walk-on," I knew that I would have to earn everything. Therefore, every single day, every single practice session, every single weight room workout, every single repetition became an opportunity to demonstrate that I deserved to be part of the team. The experience tested me mentally and physically because, as a walk-on athlete, I knew I would have to show everyone I was meant to be here by demonstrating the resilience, discipline, and dedication I possessed. Although the experience pushed me hard, I continued to focus each day on becoming a better football player. When the football season started, it was announced I made the team, and by the third game, I had become one of the top defensive backs. This was an incredible feeling and one that gave me so much more pride and satisfaction than merely receiving playing time. It showed me that I had persevered through adversity (being unrecruited), had faith in myself (that I could make a difference on the field), and had earned my place on the team. My family has also helped shape who I am today. During my junior year of high school, my mom was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune disease called IgA Nephropathy. Her illness quickly got worse, and within several short months, she needed a kidney transplant. During this time of great difficulty for our family, I experienced fear and uncertainty for the first time in my life. But most importantly, I experienced firsthand the power of unconditional love and support. My uncle, without hesitation, selflessly gave his kidney to save my mother's life. Witnessing such a sacrifice changed my perception of strength, compassion, and unification. Throughout my mother's appointments, post-operative recovery process, and ongoing treatment and challenges with her illness, my family remained close-knit and supported each other throughout. This experience taught me to be resilient and grateful, and to appreciate the moments I spend with loved ones. Additionally, balancing academics and athletics has significantly improved my leadership, discipline, and time management. I plan to build a career that adds value to others by promoting financial literacy and providing assistance, ultimately contributing to community development. As a finance major with interests in commercial banking and wealth management. I have maintained a strong academic record and am committed to continuing my growth and success in higher education, and I'm confident I'll make the most of this scholarship opportunity. Receiving the Stephan L. Wolley Memorial Scholarship would help me continue my higher education and recognize the perseverance, leadership, and resilience that align with the scholarship's values and my journey.
Tia Lukeya Woods from Books Pages to Boarding Passes Scholarship
Academic resources have always been inviting to me. I appreciate how books and learning tools have fueled my personal growth and shaped my understanding of the world and my future potential. Currently, I am a Finance major at Clark Atlanta University. My areas of interest include Commercial Banking and Wealth Management. As I begin my educational pursuit of this degree, I realize the significance of access to knowledge in inspiring ambition. An experience that had a profound influence on me was being given access to additional financial literature, market research, and professional advice beyond what was available in the classroom. Reading about financial systems, economic trends, and methods of building wealth showed me how Finance impacts daily life. At first, this sparked an area of interest (curiosity) that eventually turned into a purpose. After reading about topics related to personal Finance and banking, I spent hours reading articles, case studies, and books. Each resource I explored deepened my understanding that financial literacy can empower communities, create opportunities, and foster stability. Access to these materials has shown me how financial institutions can positively influence families and neighborhoods, inspiring me to contribute to community growth. These resources changed my perception of learning. Rather than seeing education as a narrow scope consisting only of class lectures and assigned readings, I now view education as a continuous process of discovery. The use of books and other educational materials allows me to pose deeper questions, relate the classroom to real-world events/issues, and think critically about the development of systems. These resources have also given me the confidence to delve deeper into my own areas of interest, which will ultimately help me plan a career where I can assist others in making informed financial decisions. When students have access to quality educational resources, they don't just receive information; they receive a broader perspective. Access provides space for creative thinking, exploration, and independent thought. Students with access to educational resources have a better chance of engaging with course content at a higher level, questioning existing beliefs, and having a clearer vision of the path they wish to take. Not only do these types of educational materials increase a student's intellectual abilities, but they also enhance their confidence in their own abilities. Receiving this scholarship would enable me to focus more on my studies and professional growth by providing resources for research, development, and industry knowledge, without financial constraints. Additionally, I aim to apply what I learn to serve my community and future career. Improving financial literacy and making financial education accessible are my primary goals. I want to help others see that knowledge opens doors to opportunities beyond the classroom, aligning with Tia Lukeya Woods' belief in the power of access to learning to strengthen society. Therefore, this award would not only support my education but also enable me to continue growing into an individual who uses knowledge to make a positive impact. Much like the way books and educational resources have expanded my understanding of the world around us, I hope to help others discover possibilities they may not yet see for themselves.
      SIA Financial Planning Scholarship
As a Finance major at Clark Atlanta University with interests in Commercial Banking and Wealth Management, I am passionate about helping individuals and families achieve financial stability and long-term success. My interest in financial planning comes from understanding how deeply financial security impacts every aspect of a person’s life. I have seen how unexpected challenges, rising costs, and limited financial knowledge can place stress on families and prevent people from reaching their full potential. These experiences inspired me to pursue a career where I can help others build confidence in their financial futures. What draws me most to this field is the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Financial planning is more than managing investments or creating budgets; it is about helping people create opportunities, prepare for uncertainty, and build generational wealth. I believe financial professionals can empower individuals through education and guidance, especially those who may not have previously had access to reliable financial resources. One of the biggest issues within the financial system is the lack of accessible financial education. Many people graduate from high school without understanding basic concepts such as budgeting, credit management, taxes, investing, insurance, or retirement planning. As a result, many young adults enter adulthood unprepared to make informed financial decisions. I believe financial literacy should be integrated into school curriculums at an earlier age so students can develop healthy financial habits before facing real-world responsibilities. Another challenge is that financial planning is often viewed as a service designed only for wealthy individuals. In reality, everyone deserves access to financial guidance regardless of income level or background. Many underserved communities are hesitant to seek financial advice because the industry can appear intimidating, exclusive, or difficult to understand. I believe the financial industry can improve by focusing more on transparency, education, and community outreach. Financial professionals should work to make financial concepts simpler and more relatable so people feel comfortable asking questions and seeking assistance. I hope to be part of that solution by building a career focused on education, trust, and accessibility. Through my studies in finance, I am developing the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to guide clients toward sound financial decisions. My long-term goal is to work in Commercial Banking and Wealth Management while also helping individuals better understand personal finance and wealth-building strategies. I want to create an environment where clients feel supported rather than judged, and where financial planning becomes a tool for empowerment rather than confusion. In addition, I hope to use my career to promote financial literacy in underserved communities. Whether through mentorship, workshops, or community programs, I want to help people understand that financial success is achievable with the right knowledge and guidance. Even small financial decisions can create opportunities that impact future generations. Receiving the SIA Financial Planning Scholarship would support my educational journey and help me continue pursuing a career dedicated to improving financial literacy, expanding access to financial guidance, and helping others achieve long-term financial security.
      Clark Emerging Leaders Scholarship
One of the greatest challenges I faced was learning to balance the demands of academics, athletics, and personal growth as I prepared for my future. As a student-athlete, I quickly realized that to be successful, I would need to be disciplined, sacrifice time and energy, and persevere. There were times when I thought it would be impossible to maintain strong enough grades while meeting my athletic obligations. Balancing extended practice sessions, intense physical training regimens, travel commitments, and schoolwork challenged me mentally and physically. Rather than letting those pressures get the best of me, however, they served as motivation to improve my mental toughness and resolve. The experience of managing time effectively, being accountable to myself, and persevering during challenging times ultimately gave me the ability to approach every responsibility I took on with a renewed sense of purpose and discipline, knowing that success comes from doing things consistently over time and putting in the hard work required. In addition to improving my ability to perform well under pressure, I gained the ability to stay committed to my goals, regardless of whether everything went according to plan. That growth ultimately enabled me to achieve a 3.9 GPA, earn a spot on the President's List for spring 2026, recognize my academic excellence, and continue growing as a student and an athlete. I learned that overcoming adversity builds your character and prepares you for future leadership roles. Attending a Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCU) was one of the most significant choices I made and one of the best decisions I ever made, because I understood the impact this type of environment could have on my future. Clark Atlanta University has provided me with more than just an education; it has created a solid foundation for the life I have ahead of me. Being around Black excellence every single day has inspired me to think bigger, work harder, and believe in myself more strongly than I may have otherwise. What I appreciate most about attending an HBCU is the genuine desire that students, faculty members, and administrators share to assist one another in achieving their individual goals. One thing that sets HBCUs apart from many non-HBCUs is the cultural pride and sense of unity that exist throughout campuses. While students may be from different cities, states, or backgrounds, they share a common goal of striving for greatness and a collective sense of determination. This creates a tremendous sense of belonging among students and encourages them to pursue academic excellence not just for themselves but for future generations. As a Business Administration major concentrating in finance, I have had the opportunity to take classes in environments where there is representation of Black professionals, mentors, and leaders who share the same goals and aspirations I have for myself. In addition to providing me with educational opportunities beyond the classroom, my experience at an HBCU has positively influenced my self-confidence, leadership abilities, and overall sense of self-identity. HBCUs provide students with much more than a quality education; they provide students with development as whole people. Through organizations like the Financial Planning Association, the Business School Investment Club, and the Clark Atlanta Panthers football team, I've developed leadership, discipline, and professional networks that support my career in financial services. The support and mentorship I have received from professors, coaches, and fellow students have further strengthened my conviction that I deserve a place among society's leaders and that I am capable of achieving great things. In the future, I believe that attending an HBCU will serve me well in helping me achieve success in my chosen field because it has already provided me with a robust network of people in my area of interest, increased confidence in myself, and a better understanding of what positive influence I want to leave behind in my career. Ultimately, my goal is to find employment in commercial banking and later transition to wealth management, where I can assist individuals and families in achieving lasting financial stability and building intergenerational wealth. The values I have learned at Clark Atlanta University regarding leadership, service, and excellence will be with me forever. Most importantly, my HBCU experience has taught me that success is not measured solely by personal achievements but by the positive impact we can make on others. It has shown me the value of being connected within a community, represented as part of a larger group of people like myself who face similar challenges and obstacles. Most importantly, my HBCU experience gave me the confidence to pursue my dreams without limits and a base from which I can lead and leave a lasting legacy in my profession and community.
      ESOF Academic Scholarship
The first time I truly understood the power of financial stability was when I realized how much opportunity depends on access. Growing up, I witnessed how various financial decisions affected the options available for families and communities. This observation helped inspire me to pursue a future in which I could assist other individuals and families in developing the knowledge, resources, and opportunities required to build successful futures. Currently, as a second-year (sophomore) business administration–finance major at Clark Atlanta University, I intend to leverage education, leadership, and service to deliver impactful results in the financial services industry. Academically, my goal is to continue earning excellent grades while gaining the experience and knowledge necessary to become a commercial banking and wealth management leader. My experience on the president's list during the spring semester of 2026, for achieving a 3.9 GPA, has helped me realize the value of discipline, consistency, and diligent work. I recognize that success in finance is predicated not only on developing technical knowledge regarding the financial industry but also on having strong integrity, effective communication skills, and establishing trust with those you interact with. Through my coursework and involvement in clubs/organizations (such as the Financial Planning Association and the Business School Investment Club), I have developed a deeper understanding of financial planning, investment strategies, and the role banks play in assisting businesses and individuals. In addition to academia, participation as a member of the Clark Atlanta Panthers football program has shaped my character in numerous ways that go beyond athletic performance. Football has provided me with additional lessons in leadership, accountability, teamwork, and perseverance under duress. Balancing the rigors of competing in collegiate athletics while maintaining academic excellence requires exceptional time management and dedication – traits that I am confident will greatly aid me in my pursuit of becoming a successful professional. Being both a student-athlete and an honor roll student has pushed me to continually challenge myself to reach new heights and continue striving for personal development. Professionally, my objective is to begin my career in Commercial Banking, where I will be able to assist companies in securing the financial resources needed to expand their operations and compete successfully. I am particularly interested in learning more about how banks serve entrepreneurs and foster economic development and wealth creation within communities. Over time, I anticipate transitioning into Wealth Management, where I will assist individual and family clients in making informed financial decisions, building wealth for generations, and achieving long-term financial security. I firmly believe that financial literacy and developing a plan to manage your finances are vital tools for empowerment, especially in areas of society that have historically had limited access to such opportunities. I'm committed to civic and public service because I believe success should consistently correlate with service. While attending high school, I volunteered at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, where I held several leadership positions as a mentor to younger students in my local community. As a mentor at the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, I assisted students academically, encouraged them to make positive choices, and worked to establish a safe environment where they felt supported, valued, and motivated to achieve their best. These experiences taught me the importance of mentoring, patience, and demonstrating what I expected of my mentees by example. I observed firsthand how encouragement and guidance can positively affect children's self-confidence and future aspirations. These experiences solidified my interest in contributing to my community through service and reinforced my desire to continue serving others throughout my life and career. Additionally, I remain highly enthusiastic about enhancing financial literacy in low-income communities. A significant number of individuals are never taught the basic principles of budgeting, saving, investing, or credit management, even though these are crucial components of achieving financial independence. In the future, I plan to contribute financially by participating in community outreach programs, providing financial education workshops, and offering mentorship programs that empower individuals to feel confident managing their finances and preparing for their future. Regardless of whether it is something minor, like helping an individual better understand money management, I firmly believe that all forms of service can have positive effects on families and communities over extended periods of time. Receipt of the ESOF Academic Scholarship will allow me to focus on achieving my academic objectives and on my continued growth as a leader and service provider. Education is one of the most worthwhile investments anyone can make. Therefore, I have made a deliberate effort to invest in myself so that I may create opportunities not only for myself but also for others. Throughout the remainder of my tenure at Clark Atlanta University, I shall remain dedicated to delivering superior performances in every aspect of my collegiate experience, including academically, as a leader on and off the field, and as a servant-leader within my community. Ultimately, through my unwavering resolve, discipline, and passion for helping others succeed, I aspire to leave a lasting legacy in the world of finance and beyond.
